    hello all,

I certainly want to apologise for not being more ftimely with my responses and for not clicking in periodically to see about any other memeber’s feedback or input requiring any reaction or response.

    >DAN

back around ’12, my outfit was exchanged almost totally due to attempts by criminals to forcibly enter my premises.

I became abundantly aware just about instantly an enormous amount of havoc can be wrought in what law enforcement calls ‘response time’, and after two such incidents came to grips with the proposition my personal safety was vastly more inmportant, I had to bust a move to upgrade the security in and about my home. ASAP! the only means at hand was to convert equipment into $$$ and lay in the means to be alerted of intruders andf to personally deal with them when necessary. so I did.

thereafter health conbcerns began looming large and well, overcoming life’s tribulations thus far has not enabled me to get back into the ‘game’ so to speak.

the only new items I’ve acquired of late are more ammunition, new music CDs, and IMO a OPPO 203 UDP, high value pr of ear buds, and an AQ RED Dragon? for the new iMac Retina desktop.

i had been eyeing a Blue Sound node i2 and thought to grab one but obtaining a new AC got a higher priority and I blew the stimulus funds on it. immediately after paying for it the aC in my office died and another one was needed. and in the Sunburn State while in summer time, guess what choice I had?

the present aim is/was to amalgamate the system ‘left overs’ into a PC outfit… and that is still in the works requiring some rearranging of racks, componnets etc., and sadly I’ve just not been up to the task physically.

luckily I have been able to get to both Fla Audio shows of late, ’19, and earlier this year where I visited the OZ presentation of the Vitas 30 INT with and was delighted to hear it. that said, it showed a lot of promise, though I’m not so sure it was a bowl me over event. especially given the entry fee it demands.

my escort and I saw some personal favs there, and a couple new demos which have redirected my philosophy on audio and its consequent tarrifs, or just how much $$$$ does one need to invest to get the knnee bobing and the corners of the lips turned up.

several rooms, new to me, demonstrated systems which rolled in under $10K that were impressive. that said, there were of course others whose tags were uber high that accounted extremely well for themselves too! some in the what I call fairly manageable for many or the mid 20Ks, were as well suprisingly entertaining. Raven room was one that really buttered my bread.

if Bill Gates gave me a  check and I could only spend  $100K or less, I’d opt in on the Classic Audio T1s,  Atmasphere Chronos amps, PAD loom, but sans  the TT and add the EMM labs dAC along with a Wolfe streamer, without giving things much thought at all, such was the rooms depiction..

if Bill was more frugal I’d likely oppt for some of the Raven’s offerings and be very happy and defintley grateful.

though there were a number of really strong arguments for going other routes. Daedalus & VAC statement Integrated amp was a compelling room too. so was the Audessy and vAC statement amps.

I passed on the Magico demo as it was always too crowded so there was another likely enagaging exhibit to ponder or salivate over.

regretably  I missed the Legacy room altogether. bummer.

this is  why I feeebly posted previous to this “anything new or recent” as I’ve a long ways to go from here.

economically speaking, to illustrate the current state of y union, ‘if BMWs were being sold for $1,000 each, all I could do was to spread the word. lol.

hope that sums up things overall, well mostly anyhow.

    be well, jim

Anything new, or less than a year old and go from there.

    Hello Blindjim,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I'm not sure why you would consider such an expensive unit as the Vitus 030, although it has to be an exceptional piece to command their price for it.

I have been using an SET 845 amp that is a Chinese-made boat-anchor/space heater, but after having all the caps replaced, is making my custom Tannoy HPD 315 speakers sit up and take notice like nothing before it has. The recent addition of a Modwright SWL 9.0 Line Stage (w/upgraded power supply, new tube board and MWI caps), has me enjoying my system more than at any time in the past forty+ years.

Hope you are back on your feet again.

    Regards,
    Dan

    Hello all,

Life and Health scenarios have entirely overturned my previous acquisitions, and decidedly decimated the audio gear inventory here abouts, so a fully blank slate presents itself with which to begin anew.

with the new year about to dawn, it seemed appropriate to re-visit this thread and add in some personal goals rather than specific items, brands or models which   presently  clutter  the emotional’ side of my  brain.

IOW, the next direction for a ‘go to’ outfit.

hardware comes and goes, but personal philosophies and or traditions on amassing and sorting out a copetent audio rig tend    to remain rigorously entrenched, only the names change to announce the guilty, er, chosen pieces.

as for  my predominate lingering devotion, I remain married to the notion any top notch stereo rig must begin at the begining, ala the source. no  other part of the downstream system can make up for shortcomings here.

certainly the ’source’ first concept does not necessitate diminishing any downstream devices. it simply means the voice of any home audio construct will find its throat here, first and foremost.

the ‘soul’ of any stereo leans decidedly on the synergy demonstarted by thesum of its parts in total.

naturally a   digitally  based arrangement is the most viable course for  my circumstances, consequently, and from what I’ve heard, EMM Labs has my vote for D/A conversion duties with its flagship converter, although there are a couple very intersting European alternatives if one keeps on par with the EMM Labs MSRP.

the late influx of upper end InTEGRATED amplifiers also has captured at least my attention,  but not     as yet without  a fair amount of consternation, especially with the lofty entry fees  associated with many  of them, and my fetish for separates.

of these one box upstarts, the Vitas 030 unit most recently hitting the  market  certainly  is attractive!, though, as said,  not the only gum drop in the jar in this respect.

the only definitive choice  though not totally clear aspect as to brand and model, is the speakewrs, and here is where my usual philosophy is about to make an abrupt lane change.

    Horns.

it makes sense to get into horns as this genre of loud speakers afford numerous possibilities with amplifier designs and topologies, given I’m prone to using glass amplifiers predominately but , not exclusively, horns, or so it seems offers fascinating options for adding in power amps.

its said, 80% of the music is made in the first 20 watts’. I’m anxious to see how much of the music can be made in the first 5 or 10  watts if quite effeicient speakers are in place.

prudence keeps,  ‘wading into the pool is the safer  approach than diving in head first’, so there will be   steps along the way to educate and re-educate myself on how the State of the art has driven the fundamental areas of signal development, amplification and reproduction in todays compoenents.

at least it sure seems intriguing on paper!

anything expensive. not uber expensive. not ransoming the kid expensive. not even ransoming the spouse expensive. maybe renting the spouse expensive. depending. probably have to defer to a second opinion  then.

Speakers are on top of the list. High Eff types. All else about them is up in the air .

    blindjim

Jim, yours has become an opinion I respect, which has given to a desire, and curiosity about, your system. I would love to see photos, and description of your system, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards,

Yes, the Dodds are alive and wwell, with new power cords and stands attached to them.

I'm hesitant to snap photos till all is in place, aside from the color changes, track lighting and carpeting, it's still a bit spartan looking. Darker, warmer, yet sparse... with a really big 116" DIY screen on one wall staring back at you, it looks odd.

The difficulty with acquiring new draperies is finding pinch pleated ones, and getting a decent ceiling mounted traverse rod. I've found some curtains sure. the color options just don't suit me.

Now tiring of the ordeal I'm likely just going to put back up what was there until I get the right ones... which should help the looks some too.

... and I still need to make the center ch speaker stand.

On the whole, though, it is better sonically now that I can close off the room completely.

I also went with some plywood platforms for all the speakers and sub to overcome the deeper pile of the new rug, and just last weekend got the stain for them all, so that's gotta get done too now.

...and the Wirehider conduit is up and the wires ran. I've had to reorder some terminations and another video cable that has yet to arrive, but should quite soon.

Add in lengthy waits for the lighting to arrive, the electrician to schedule it, and finish... and repairing the scratches the carpet installers furnished at no extra charge BTW, and those associated repairs, and here we are.

Oil well. It is what it is. It will be finished however. Hopefully before God comes.

The road goes on forever, and the party needs to end…

    sometime….soon.

The first poster to this blogged audio & video journey of mine, said “Do the room first.”

I’m sure there is wisdom in that but I’ll take issue with the word “first”, however. Soon, at some point, or lastly, I agree the room needs attention to be paid to it. Earnest and appropriate attention. That comes at some expense. A lot of expense even if you do or do not pay attention…. You’ll pay for room redoing and acoustic treatments..

Done? No, not yet but Mine is nearly finished. At least to the point where I can begin to bring back in the main speakers and sub. Fllowing 3 months of non playing whatsoever, things are acting like they’ve never been run in. the coming up to speed though is taking far less time though. Stuff needs to have signals passed through it, leaving it just plugged in isn’t much help afterall. Well, the stuff that actually moves or rotates, anyhow.

Closing off the room on both sides now, has proven to be a huge bonus. The sound field has become far more the evenly dispensed field one would naturally want.

Due to the newly installed ‘better than before’ medium thick pile carpeting and thicker pad, new spikes will be necessary I’m sure.

Curtins have been swapped about and one set is now out, awaiting replacement. A ceiling mounted traverse rod will now reside behind the speakers and cover the wall mounted 16:9 59 x 98 in. projector screen.

I’m figuring all but the DIY acoustic treatments will be in place by NFL’s regular season opener in Sept.

Perhaps the room should be the last thing acoustically treated, as by then you’ll know just what to treat, instead of balancing a room first then continuing to add other items which will throw it all off by the time you’re done.

Now, who makes a good hot air popcorn popper?

It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes to get things done around here... and how plans can morph into something entirely different! I think I’ve heard that somewhere before….

    Finally!

The living/listening room is completely closed off. Pocket doors, bi folds, and a pre hung 3/0 did the job. $2K got em installed and trimmed out. Another several hundred got the room repainted. Other additions were a 110 HT DIY screen, and a BenQ PE 7700 DLP FP. Both are mounted.

Rail/track Lighting is next up and only a decision of sort, color, wattage, and placement are left to be decided there.

Latest system additions of note are a Running springs Audio Haley, a Bel Canto DAC3, (which only edged out the Lavry DA 10 due to remote control and a USB interface, sonically the Lavry is far more the musical device), a Velodyne DD15, Onkyo TXSR 805, a brand new Odyssey Stratos SE SS amp, some brand new stands from Sound Anchor for the rear speakers, and another new pair of their amp stands as well for the Dodds. A pair of HT Magic III ICs also found their way into the mix.

One inch Cherry dowles and some 3/4 plywood and some ball type furniture footers will make up the substrata for the Chunks and are presently on site. Covering fabric is undecided as to color and type.

Wire management will be from Wirehider and painted accordingly to enclose the HDMI & other video cables to the PE 7700, and for connecting the rear speakers to the Onkyo HT rec. Another multi ch Ss amp might be added later on as well as a second sub for the rear speakers…. But I’m in no rush to do that last bit.

Whew! That's enough for now... re-carpeting will just have to wait a bit longer even though it does make sense to do it before re-installing the speakers & sub back into the room.

Hmmmm... well maybe I should do something that makes 'timely' sense for a change. So, OK... after the lighting and curtains get selected, or during, I'll pick out new carpeting for the room too. Just wait to put it in last though.

So what seemed like just additions for securing a better 2 ch presentation turned into a full fledged attack, albeit a lethargic one, and it’s become a better more upscale way to entertain, and watch flicks, sports and TV.

A needed addition will be at least one more silverline speaker aimed for the center ch as the TXSR 805 Onkyo receiver does not allow for ghosting of the center speaker. I found that quite surprising and a mite distressing too for a $1K HT receiver.

I think side wall speakers for 7.1 might also a consideration too, however they'll have to be surface mounts and paintable. They'll also probably be added only if needed, and definitely after all else is finished.

Appreciation comes with greater impact... after the fact.

Possessing a shunyata Python VX in the past and then opting for some 'looking 'ruond' for another source PC wasn't a mistake as much as it was an eye opener.

I re-acquired another PVX recently and instantly remembered what had been left behind and just how much I enjoyed the "old red" one.

regaining it's infulence in my system is deeply satisfying, especially with the new xa 777's drive outfitted by an auth svc center locally.

    truly a fine fit!

A significant move became the replacement of the drive module in the xa 777es CDP. Whoa! Should have done that a year or two ago. They don't last forever. Only 5 or 6 years.

Nice move. $300 at an authorized Sony service station. Both lasers and drive mtr. are now new. Took a goodly while to run back in too, and could still use some more time.

I added an Oppo Digital DV 980H multi format disc player. Quite suprising a device!

Also I've found some strong value oriented cables by way of Audio Art and the Micro Pearl from Alpha Core. I presently give the nod to the AA IC3 over the MP though.

I did replace the recliner by another more upscale unit. Added also some bass traps people can sit on. Oddly they look very much like chairs and a loveseat. In fact they do help the sound as well as being accomodating.

I've been dragging my feet, and dreading the task of slicing and dicing the Fiberglass panels to date, but the next cold snap will yeild some prime cuts and construction of the SC & assoc. panels, including some corner busters.

It's curtains for me. they're up. Some tweaking of the fabrics and positioning is still in order though. It's a far better esthetic and now no longer do I have to look upon a barren wall. The zip in the room dropped dramatically. Focus seems improved as well.

Super chunks are next along with some DIY panels.

The amp is changing too. Getting Dodd mono blocks to obtain SE throughout and the added power is welcome.

Sorry to take so long with things. I had wanted to go a lot faster naturally, but things, not ‘time’ won’t let me.

I gotta build a fire to get smoking. So I sold the JRs, and the vk500. Lost much of my sanity and increased my anxiety level. Found a reasonably priced BAT tube amp and deliberated on buying speakers. What brand, type, etc. Found a deal on Silverline Sonata IIIs. Stole a fine Voodoo Tesla II power cord and some tube vendors with some nice inexpensive NOS tubes for the VK 60 & TA 1000 MK II.

Decided to move ahead with the rock wool/OC DIY panels, then finally, mod the Sony CDP, and check out the new SR Tesla series speaker wires. A DAC is sure a real benefit but will have to wait. As will the xa777.

I decided to attack the room first by layering curtains on the front wall. Behind them place some panels and diffusion things. Make two Super chunks also for that wall with four ft. being the first level… then add more if necessary, rather than go floor to ceiling right off..

‘Course given the way my plans go, there’s no telling what will happen next, but every effort is to get them curtains up, panels and chunks done.

IMO - The best system upgrade/addition was a chaise recliner I got for Xmas, and some CD’s.

Thanks... yeah, whatever it winds up being. it might wind up being two completely different amps in the end, though I hope only one sort is necessary.

2K...ouch. Please pass along my condolences to your wallet.:)

I`ve taken a little break from working on my main system and am putting together a killer can rig for the office. My akg k701`s will be here tomorrow. Actually, I`m plenty happy with the main rig but will probably upgrade my amp also sometime down the line.

Good luck with your new amp.

we're still circling the landing strip. Waiting for the 'dough' runway to open up. Shouldn't be long now. Living costs in my state went up severely this past year and that's an extra 2K I'd not planned on. Overcoming that shortfall has lengthened the time till I can do what I want by way of acoustics.

The other side of the coin, is I'm making an amp move shortly I hope, which will markedly improve my position there. though I'm having to part with my bestest amp and fav speakers to do it.

Somewhere in that mix I'll soon be adding some DIY panels. Not ones I would prefer, but something... sort of a look see, and yep, they're way cheap. 7 x 3 inch 705 OC for $56.

    blindjim

Jim, what`s the latest on your acoustic panel odyssey?

    capt369

    Owner

Yes. Burlap will be a less expensive way to go too. Ordered some swatches today.

I managed to hold on to several sets of 6DJ8 tubes... Tele PCC 88, Amperex's 7308 green, orange, and yeah, a pair of PQ US white too. Figuring "who knows?"... and mostly I've seen them all used in pairs... so I beleive I'll be OK if I get a tube DAC, which is on the list too.

    blindjim

    Jim,

From reading past posts on this site, I believe the general consensus is that burlap provides the best sonic covering for these diy panels for reasons I don`t recall offhand..fwiw. You might do a search.

Tube rolling can be great fun. I have an audio aero prima hybrid int. amp with a single 6922 tube in the pre. I replaced the jj telsa it came with to a vintage 1960 amperex PQ A-frame. Fairly expensive but I needed only one. Tailored the sound to my liking beautifully.

L shaped? sorry to hear that... but gland you figured out how to manage it.

got the prices today on the panel materials. Not bad, I think. so long as I wait for them to re-up first and don't make it a special order.

Also got some tubes for the Thor on the way. RCAs. I was assured they would outperform the stock tubes. Hope so their twice the price of a stock set.

Now i gotta find some cover material for the RTs... and harder stil is picking the color.

    blindjim

Jim, my merlin monitors only go down to 55 hrtz. Since I live in an apartment, altho concrete sided, I feel that is enough bass for me for now. When I finally do add a sub, I`ll address those inherant bass issues.

My primary reason for using large first reflection panels is to help with sound staging as my listening room is L-shaped into the breakfast room. They work well in that capacity.

When you get your owen corning pieces situated, I`ll be curious as to your opinion of their effect.

    Thanks.

    capt369

    Owner
I thought about the drape bit. Still am actually. given their price however, dedicated acoustic items aren't terribly much more depending upon which or who... we'll see. those carpeted panels can't be helping with bass though are they?

I found an outlet in my area for the 705; 702 etc owens corning panel materials, just a matter of going, getting, and cutting.. i was also wondering about the backs, or even putting some sort of backing onto them... something medium strong as I'd like to try making some 12 & 18 inchers. vs. all 24's x 48's.

I'll get off the dime soon enough with that project.

    blindjim

fwiw...My panels are made with, and supported by 2x2" legs and feet with a plywood backing covered with heavy carpet. Portability has many advantages.

For the wall behind my speakers, I hung drapes on a solid wall. It not only offers sonic value, it appears that I have another window. YMMV.

Have fun and enjoy the music...

    capt369

    Owner
I will. For my next trick, I'm going to get some panels (DIY) or inexpensive ready mades for reflection points. sides and rear.

Anyone know of any that do work well in wall mounted settings, and are attractive?
