Ozzy: Yes, we did. I received the Morrow Dig4 over a week ago, also with the silver Eichmans and 5 day burn in. I haven't been able to evaluate it because my computer won't download the proper driver for the usb/spdif interface that's plugged into it. Now I have to return the interface and get one that doesn't require a download. I hate this crap.
Devilboy, I believe we have communicated, but if not I apologize. Yes the Morrow cable I am using is the Dig 4, in my opinion it is way better than the Kimber D-60 in all the areas that matter. Better sound staging, sound quality, frequency extremes etc. But I did pay extra to include the Silver Eichmann rca's. The Have/Canare is a very good cable for the money and as soon as I get my Cable Cooker, I'm going to give it a try again.
Ozzy: I posted some questions in one of your previous threads that has been dormant for some time so I'll ask here as well. It's regarding digital cables. I'm in the market for a digital RCA to RCA cable. I see you like the Morrow cable. Is it Dig1 or Dig4? Also, it apparently beat out your Kimber Illuminati D-60. What about the Have/Canare? How does it compare to your reference digital cable?
Highend64, Just about every day. There still is a slight edge in Audio Quality playing CD's through my Cary 306 SACD over playing the Touch with digital out to the Cary. But, it is very close and so much more fun. Its great to pick a whole bunch of tunes to play anytime without having to get up to change discs.
System edited: New pictures and discription. DIY speaker cables are Wwaayyy better than any of the high priced speaker cables that I tried in the past!
Desalvo55, yes I do have a Oppo BDP 95. But I use it mostly in my Home theater set up. However,I did try a few SACD's and Cd's. But I still prefer my Cary 306 SACD player with those formats.
Ozzy, I understand that you picked up an Oppo BDP-95. If that's true how is it working for you?
Just sold my PS Audio Perfectwave gear. I've got a hot-rodded BDP-83SE which sounds pretty good, but I want better. Thinking about the 95 and possibly a mod to go along with it. I like the idea of attaching my music library to thee Oppo as well as playing my SACD's and as a bonus, 3D TV when the mood arises.
Perhaps RFI is a factor, I dont really know. But the Walkers are supposed to deal with that. No matter, the end result is still that the sound quality is better than when I used the other $$$ cables.
If I was to use the factor of 10 that many cable builders use, my home made versions would sell for $5000 retail (not counting the Walkers and the Ground Controls).
I still believe that the actual wire conductor itself is the most important element in speaker cables. All the other cable manufacturer claims are just so much BS.
Ozzy, when I had Beauhorn Virtuosos, I wired them with no Teflon insulation. I just kept the leads far apart. Later with the Muratas, I initially used Teflon tubing on one lead. Later I took it off. The Teflon on one lead ruined the sound. Old homes used uninsulated wires for ac with both leads wrapped around ceramic insulators. I have often thought of doing that but RFI is so great today, I doubt if it would be any good.
Desalvo55, I realy didn't know what to expect, I was afraid it would be hard sounding and tilted towards the treble. Surprisingly the sound was very smooth, yet detailed but in no way harsh even with very little break in. I sold my Synergistic cables and bought other things. I still have my SR Power cables though.
I think I read somewhere that the dielectic is what takes forever to break in. With my DIY cables there is no dielectic. But, if I was doing it over again , I would perhaps use an even larger gauge teflon tubing to allow for more air around the conductor. I dont know if it would make a difference in the sound however.
Kwa69, Yes, you will need a 14 gauge for both + and -. Bare wire is probably the best way to go, plus you will save quite a bit by not buying the Goertz spades.
The Ground Controls and the Walkers add to the cost, but I also had them when I used the Synergistic Apex speaker cables. They they dont look like much for what they cost, but they will make your speakers come alive!
Thanks Ozzy going to look in to it. So I need a 14 gauge for the + and one for the - and connectors what about bare wire dont know anything about Ground Controls and the Walker Ref + your speaker wire looks massive like 7 gauge with a clear jacket i am probably going to try to make it myself hope it sounds better than my audioquest thanks again Ozzy very nice system
I've purchased wire from ebay just as you had. I was looking for a different type of wire, a different recipe. The wire I'm using is gold over brass. The wire I was looking for was gold over silver. Unobtainable in the states. I even tried to get companies to make this stuff for me.
This recipe comes from a fellow Audiogoner named Jadem6. Thanks Jadem.
So I settled for a hard annealed 18awg (mistake with hard annealed I think as I didn't know any better) for ground and 3 runs of 28awg for the signal. No twists, layed over 3/4 inch cotton piping + and - opposite sides of the piping and run in cotton sleeve - no dialectric really other than - cotton. Thes terminated into some very high end Furutech connectors, rhodium, locking, don't recall the model number. They work VERY WELL!
Thanks for the tip Ozzy! I'll be making a set to compete with my Tesla's.
I found the wire on EBay. Just do a search for solid core 9999 Silver wire, then look for 14 gauge. There are several sellers, most have listed only a few feet of it for sale.I sent a message asking for a 50 foot length. They were more than happy to provide it. I think it went for about $7 a foot. I believe the seller on Ebay that I purchased it from was online2deal mention my name, perhaps it will help.
Make sure it is soft annealed, it should be able to bend easily almost like solder. The soft annealed makes a big difference in sound quality.
The Goertz connectors can be found at Goertz Website and use a good Silver Solder. The 12 gauge teflon tubing was bought from Handmade Electronics.
I ran the conductors in opposite directions for the + and -. I then twisted them about 3 twists per foot.
The Ground Controls can be bought from Music Direct.
I also added the Walker HDL Ref + these were a liitle pricey but added a great calmness to the music.
All in all the final product sounds way better than any Speaker cable I have or have owned or tried. And, I have tried some very $$$ cables including the Synergistic Apex. Purist Audio Dominus, Virtual Dynamics Rev 2 and Nordost Valhalla.
I'd be curios as well regarding your DIY speaker cables. I built my own interconnects using Jadems 6 recipe. Not only did his "science" make sense, the cables I built are great.
Ozzy very nice system love the pass gear. I saw your post onthe the cable forum and would appreciate little more details on the process of making your speaker wire's. I like silver rca's never thought about silver speaker wire im very intrigued appreciate any advice you can give me again nice system ozzy.
