Description

My 861 is here to stay. The Wilson's will stay for as long as I stay in my house. A bigger house might warrant some different speakers, but not yet.

800 series v1.6 Meridian has been added to accompany the 861 - one of the best pre-amps out there - never mind prcessors...no upsampling from the 800 as it's only v1. Makes ease of use much better as well as the sound!

I have now bought Kubala Sosna Emotion cables (interconnect and speaker) which I can't properly use (still!) as I accidentally blew my tweeters! So the Sonus Fabers are back at the front for the time being.

I did A/B of KS versus Virtual Dynamics and *in my system* there was a clear winner - KS. Imaging is now some of the best I've heard. Not qutie the openess I heard with the VD Revelation cable, but I could not get it to image well at all. However in my dealers (halcro pre/power plus Acappella High Violins) system, the difference was much less clear cut - it depends on so many things - they are both good cables!

New cabinet has taken away the DIY feel to the system and new heavy curtains have done wonder for imaging and sound overall.

I'm UK based, but travel quite bit.

:o)

Components Toggle details

    • Meridian 861v4.2
Possibly the best AV processor out there?
    • Krell Showcase 5
    5 Balanced Channels 125W
    • Kubala Sosna Emotion
Balanced, twixt Meridian and Krell, like a slippery snake.
    • Nordost Red Dawn
    Balanced, for rear channels
    • Kubala Sosna Emotion
More slippery snakes - 2m into the Wilson's.
    • Wilson Audio Sophia
Gloss Black - heavy (2 people) and the smallest they make!
    • Chord Rumour II
12 metre long runs through the front wall, round the outside of the house, back in at the left rear channel and behind the sofa to the right rear!
    • Sonus Faber Concerto
Walnut and leather with ironwood stands. Now used for surround duties. These are a very good speaker for the money.
    • Sonus Faber Gravis
Very few of these about, but unported, three drivers 300W amp inside. Not the best, but perfectly acceptable for movies.
    • Meridian 800
Reference DVD/CD player. I own it for the chassis when the bluray / HDDVD guys sort themselves out. Not soon most likely.

I have never heard the Sonus Faber, so I can not comment on the differences you are hearing. I am just a little surprsied. I wonder if the warmer feeling is coming from the intrinsic sound of the sonus faber enclosure. I can not "hear" any contribution from the cabinet in the wilsons.

From looking at the limited pictures you have posted I would agree that your room is probably a huge part of your problem.

As for integrating your sub with the sophias, I went through the same thing with my sunfire signature sub. Once I had completed adding all the rest of my components (bigger amp and dedicated pre-amp) I found that the bass was outstanding and the use of a sub became unnecessary. Actually I found the bass of the Sohpias to be much quicker, tonally correct, and more truthful to music than the sunfire could provide. And damn do they go deep. The sunfire only added loundness and robbed the sophias of those great attributes. I would recommend fixing the room interactions and keeping the sub for your home theatre only.

I would be very interested to hear how the Lamm's sound with the Sophias. Have you heard hem on the Sophia's?

Can you elaborated on the differences that you have noticed between the Sonus Faber and the Wilsons.

I have not found the Sophias to be bright at all (but I have an all tube set up, which will make a difference for sure). My guess is that you are hearing more of the true voice of the Krell than you may be wanting to hear. I recently had an oportunity to hear an all Krell set-up (Resolution 2 speakers, showcase DVD, multichannel processor and multichannel amp). I listened manly in two channel with music I was very familar with on two seperate occations. Without going into too much detail, my system, with the sophias, outperformed the krell system in every "audiophile" respect. The krell set-up was "bright" despite being in a well dampened room. Just a thought...
