Description

My system goal was to enable the sound to be warm and neutral with enough power to play the music clearly at ALL volume levels. The tube phono stage gives the warmth that the SS amp and pre-amp need for the TT source. The Wavestream phono stage is VERY stable and integrates extremely well with the Boulder equipment. The Rockports can handle ANYTHING the amp can give it and more. With 91db sensitivity and capable of 112db max. Oh Baby!!!!

amazing rig, i love my rockports w/ my 1060. very similar rigs we have! but i'm in a smaller room---who set up your speakers? i ask b/c i have mine set up wider, but with more toe in. looks like center of baffle to other center is maybe 8ft in your case, but with very little toe in. how far are you seated away?

Thanks, Doug. Any word on how close these come to their larger, newer brethren, the Arrakis? Or Altair?

I should also mention, Andy the designer of Rockport modified Michael Grellman's Rockport Hyperion speakers with the new Skaaning Carbon Fiber mids.
The Woofers and mids were modified to the new
Skaaning Carbon fiber mids.

Great system!!! Just came across this. There are parallels between our respective systems. I also use SS Class A amplification (Gryphon) and have one of the well regarded Japanese digital sources (Zanden). My speakers are an old pair of Wilson X1/Grand Slamms. Also use Tranp Ref XL and the smaller HRS stuff (damping plates, etc).

I am amazingly impressed by Rockport and would love to spend more time with them. You must have incredible sound...enjoy!!

I use a Velodyne DD18 with my X1s...on everything. To come back to Doug99's question...do you use yours for music as well?

lloydelee21

What a system.
Just curious, are you using the Wilson Audio Watch Dog sub for movies, or your using it on the Rockport Hyperion for music?

Hai spiegs im surprised to see a scoutmaster (a super version actually) keeping up in such a beautifull system , my next upgrade will be a turntable i dont know which one yet though .
I read you like to turn up the volume and still want a crisp and pure/clear sound which is also what i like and what is high end sound to me actually .
Interesting phonostage by the way .

I must say, you have a most incredible system. I have heard those Rockports at Goodwins High End and was so very much impressed. You have assembled a "best of the best" audio system. I was actually, quite proud of my own system until I came across yours. Now, not so much.

To say I am one envious audiophile is putting it mildly. Happy listening!!!

Hi Aaron,
I had the Grand Prix Monaco before the HRS base. I actually was auditioning the HRS for the CD and although it improved the overall sound about 5-7%, the base was really made for under a TT as it was oversized. When I tried it under the TT, I was able to get an improvement of closer to 15% and its been there ever since. I bought the smaller unit for the CD which worked a bit better for me that the large one. The HRS rack also doesn't have enough shelves for my system and is about 50 G's done right.
My listening room is 16 feet by 23 feet with 12 foot ceilings. I have the speakers set about six feet from the back wall and have not used any room treatments.....yet. I have to say, that I have been a bit skeptical using them but really haven't experienced the positives from them. I would love to hear more about them.
Thanks for the compliments on my lineup!

Hi Spiegs57,

Interesting to see that you use an HRS platform between the Formula shelf of your Grand Prix Audio Monaco and your VPI turntable. Wouldn't you be better off going with an HRS rack instead?

How big is your listening room and do you employ any room treatments such as bass traps, diffusion at first reflection points, etc?

Congratulations on an impressive lineup.

Aaron
