Very nice system, indeed. You may want to know that I own and have owned several Apogees except the Grands. Out of all of my Apogees, I rank the Centaur Majors very highly, even higher than the Diva. These speakers are just awesome. I love their midrange/tweeter so much that I prefer it over the foil-only midrange and tweeter combination of the Apogee Fullrange. Hard to believe, huh? You bet. My current system, which is my ultimate system at any price is the Fullrange ribbon panel combined with the Centaur Major's midrange/tweeter ribbon through a custom enclosure that I designed along with the passive crossover.
I have written in length about the C-Major's awesome ribbon in many forums.
I am not willing to trade my combined speaker with any other speaker at any cost unless someone exchanges it with a speaker that can sell for $50k (in which I will sell the expensive speaker and make my own same speaker again).
One of the secrets of my achieving a great sound is replying on my own ears. Please do not depend on Stereophile ratings. Such ratings (including those by other magazines) will only leave you wondering that better sound exists out there but is out of your reach. That in turn will only increase your itch and eventually you will empty your pocket in exchange for may be even worse sound than what you have.
Enjoy what you have and upgrade only after you have listened to something very extensively and you
prefer it in *your* system.
You can easily bi-amp your Centaur Major speakers, with tube at the top and a powerful SS amp at the bottom. I know these speakers very well. I still have a pair of these, which will stay with me forever.
In my opinion, your speakers are too close to each other. Please place them further apart. Experiment with the distance increasing up to 6 feet between inner edges.
You can take a look at my system at audiogon, even though I have not updated the pictures and description of the combined "Centaur Full-range" that I wrote above.
Happy listening.
