Linn based AV system with active crossovers throughout using a total of 20 amplification channels. My efforts have focused on simplicity both in the system and the room environment. This has not been an easy task given the amount of wiring involved in a 5.1 Aktiv system. I have also paid attention to proper centre speaker placement. I've removed the kit rack from behind the centre, pulled the centre to proper wall distance, and used a dedicated Linn stand. The result has been major sonic improvement for 5.1 and I think minimal space intrusion. I could no longer tolerate the boxed-in sound of the centre placed under the plasma against the wall or on the floor.
Linn certainly makes higher performing compponents than presented here. I felt there were significant diminishing returns beyond this point. I'm holding ground with the Unidisk SC, the 5125 and the Akurates. The next step will be the interconnects; once I'm completely satisfied with kit placement. Any recommendations for 2m interconnects above the stock Linn Black performance?
You know Ottawa mtnman, you also have a great looking apartment there. I am sure the stereo is in the biggest room in the house. What would vastly improve the sound is some room treatments along with an area rug. I am sure that you are getting far too many reflections from the side walls and hardwood floor. I would give this some thought before upgrading cables, that is as long as the girls approve.
I think you have a very nice setup there. The stereo is looking good to. For a solid state setup as yours, I would lean toward silver cables. If you are looking for an all in one setup, Nordost makes them for 5.1. If to much, I try homegrownaudio.com, wonderful cables at good prices. By the way, at the last stereophile show they featured an all Linn setup, got some rave reviews from the stereophile personnel at the 'Meet the Editors' segment. Enjoy.
