This is my current primary Music/HT system. I am probably split 50/50 in usage. Just discovered vinyl and how wonderful they sound on the Maggies.
Until recently, my biggest gripe was the lack of a deep, bass foundation. I was previously using a single V2W for both HT and music. It did a good job but I wanted more. The addition of a dedicated 2Wq for each Maggie has far exceeded my expectations.
02/14/04 - Just replaced the McCormack .5 REV A for the MG 3.6R, with 2 Rowland 201 monos. The amps are still breaking in but the system is much more dynamic with a much larger sound stage.
. I am considering getting a pair of 20.1's and am wondering how they would work with a pair of small subs augmenting the bass. Are your subs fast enough to keep up with the big maggies? .
How does the Rowland/Maggie combination sound in your system? I have an all Magnepan Music/HT system and currently use Krell amps. I'm looking to change to a JRDG set up of 501s main front/201 center and 102 rear after my Krell FPB-200 amp overheated after operating for a total of three hours (its still at Krell for repair). I'm particularly interested in how the 501s are able to drive the Maggie's and present all the usual stereo concerns (highs/lows without grain/stress, presentation of soundstage width/depth). Thanks.
MG 20.1, you lucky ;-) Did you try with the tweeter inside instead of outside? In all my tests, it has always been better for the soundstage and easier to get deep bass.
System edited: I finally added 2 dedicated 20amp circuits with Shunyata Venom outlets. Replaced the Python with the Alpha on the RGPC1200s. Per my dealer, I had the 501s plugged directly into the wall. I found that the highs were ocassionally harsh. I currently have the amps in the RGPC1200 where the highs are smooth. Compared to the Python, the Anaconda has a much blacker background.
Drubin - I only have experience with Shunyata (Snakebite, Sidewinder, Black Mamba, King Cobra, Taipan, Python). I have never used the stock cord on the 201//501. The Taipans make the Rowland very dynamic and energetic. The Taipans work well on the amps but makes the CasaNova or Concerto too forward. I currently have the amps plugged into the RGPC1200 which is powered by a Python Alpha. This makes a smooth combination. I have been itching to upgrade to the Anaconda Alpha. Before the Python Alpha, I had a Taipan on the RGPC. This was a dynamic combo but the Python is less harsh.
I recently had dedicated 20amp circuits with Shunyata Venom outlets installed. I tried the amps directly into the outlet but did not like the sound at the high end which was sometimes harsh. The RGPC smooths the top end without hurting the dynamics.
You are using the Taipan PC on your Rowland amps. Are you happy with this pairing? Try any others? I ask because I have 201s and have been using them with stock cords, but recently tried Audience PC and discovered how substantial the cnage is, but not sure Audience is the way to go.
You want a mod you can hear for alot less, at least in the analog rig? Try TWL's HIFI mod found under analog in the threads, bar none the cheapest mod with the greatest return. Only about $1.50 if you already have superglue, no OK $3.00 after the glue? Curious, it's worth it, check it out. Sounds great on my meager Maggies(.5QR).
Wow setups.. the Vandy subs probably integrate really well and are a lot less than the Rel's. what do you think about the 501's versus the 201's. The 201's didn't have enough mid-bass control for my Wilson Watt Puppy 7's. So I was interested in the 501s. I run a Rowland Synergy IIi preamp and it is amazing so you will definitely enjoy the Concerto!
