Older buildings in NY had very good lathe real plaster and solid old wood floors.The living room of a pre-war Bronx apartment I lived in for ten years was like that and sounded great. The thick plaster walls were also good at isolating the sound. I could never hear my next door neighbor playing her piano and she couldn't hear my hi-fi.
