I've been using the 501 for years, but then the arm lift mechanism wore completely out. Somebody suggested using one from a 507, which I did, but I had to enlarge the hole in its holder, which I managed to accomplish using a Forstner bit on my drill press.
It works perfect again, so glad to have it back especially, since it's my only tonearm.
Thanks, islandmandan! I love your Garrard 401! Beautiful system! I'll never part with my Dynavector 501; had it for 34 years. I'm currently running a Hana SL on it - a good synergy.
This has instantly become my favorite virtual system on A'gon. I also have a Dynavector 501 tonearm on my turntable, a DIY Garrard 401. A Zu Audio Denon 103R also gets its turn in the cartridge rotation.
On the Cornwall IVs, I removed the stock feet (they are cheap stamped steel pressed into the wood and can easily be pried out) and replaced them with 2" diameter 1/4" wool felt pads. Two pads stacked for the rear and 5 pads stacked in the front to tilt them back, which helps with the highs in my setup. Now they don't scratch the hardwood floor. Also damped the horns and woofer cages and replaced some caps in the x-overs with V-cap odams. Smoother overall now.
The 'vintage hi-fi museum' is what makes it so interesting. I'd kind of keep the modern and vintage separate from a visual perspective. Your eye combining decor and gear is superb.
Thanks everyone for the nice comments! Yes, as of today I still own all of the equipment in the pics. I have six systems and some of the equipment moves around from system to system. The house is starting to look like a vintage hi-fi museum. Three of the systems aren't shown; one has a vintage NAD 3020/4020 combo with Pyramid Met 7 speakers, one has home-made full range six foot ribbons with a Peachtree Decco 65.
Gobsmacked! Your collection of gear, the way it's presented and photographed had me drooling on the keyboard. And as mentioned below the various accoutrements used for diffusion and absorption are also very nice! Well done sir!
Stunning system or systems! Can we get some details on components? And those David Bogen amps are two pieces? The diagonal things in front seem to be attached.
