Description

Room Treatment
5/2016 - New room treatment with absorption for main room modes and lots of diffusion. Now working on improving lateral first reflection room treament.
Results tested with my ears and with Earthworks M30/Roland Quadcapture/REW.

Performed several mods to the Dunlavy SC-VI speakers:

(A) External crossovers with original circuit topology:
     (i) upgraded caps and inductors to Duelund CAST copper for the main path,
(ii) all resistors to Path Audio (sound better than Duelund cast in my crossover),
(iii) Duelund RS caps for the secondary path and
(iv) Duelund cast/Mylar for the 220uf in the secondary path,
     (v) Duelund cast silver bypass caps for high and mid CAST copper caps,
(vi) Changed binding posts to Furutech FT-806R.
(vii) Kept the two original crossovers for reference, and
(viii) Final form of external enclosure and vibration control completed in 2017.
(viii) Put the crossovers on top of two Finite Elemente Pagode Master Reference Mk.II

(B) changed the tweeters to top of the line Seas Crescendo (listened and measured frequency response and impulse response - great improvement, if they did not sound and measure better I would have put back the original Vifa tweeters - yes, this is a radical change),

(C) Plan to replace the internal rewiring of the speakers with top hook up wires from Neotech and Mundorf.

Thanks for your suggestions of additional changes.

Hi Thieliste, the two Todaldac D1-Drivers sounded better than the CH L1+X1.

This year I upgraded: the Totaldac D1-Drivers to Mk2, upgraded the Todadac DAC mk3 to Totaldac Supreme DAC, and Totaldac recloker mk2 to Totaldac Supreme Reclocker.

Since the Totaldac Supreme DAC has new output stages, I recently decided to compare them driving the CH M10 directly vs. using the Totaldac Drivers mk2. I preferred the Totaldac Supreme DAC directly into the M10 (more detail, better bass, now downside).

So, for now, I am not using the two Todaldac Drivers mk2 anymore.  Maybe after a future upgrade, when it comes, I will compare again.

I upgraded a few cables from Echole Limited Edition to Limited Edition Model 2: The power cable at the CH X1, one of the AES-EBU of the Totaldac, and the XLR interconnect between the Totaldac and the CH L1.  I am very happy with the results.  Even more realistic timbre, soundstage and dynamics. Well done Echole!

Hello Daniel,

Thanks!  I just read what you wrote on your system page, and I will try some of your ideas/mods.  Great work!

So far I have not found power cables for the Krell 750mcx that sounded better than the original cables in my system, and I tried some very expensive cables.  I hope to try the Shunyata at some point.

Hello Oldager,

Thank you!

I purchased the L1 first and then had the opportunity to hear the X1 in my system for a week before deciding whether to purchase.   The improvement brought by the X1 is very easy to hear.  Better soundstage (deeper), more ambiance, better bass.

Important to have both the L1 and X1 on some vibration absortion (like the SRA Scuttle mk3 rack). You have to try with and without the connecting spickes, because using the internal spikes makes a big difference (L1 yes X1 yes, L1 no X1 yes, L1 yes X1 no, L1 no X1 no), I prefer L1 no spikes and X1 no pikes (but on the SRA Scuttle).

So, definetly go for the X1, or upgrade directly to the CH L10.

Hello JA,

Thank you!

Regarding the CH + Krell, the CH L1+X1 was an important upgrade vs. the Krell Phantom which is already a great preamplifier.  I heard lots of top preampliers and power amplifiers in my system, and the CH preamp was a great move. The CH L1+X1 improved the quality of the bass, extended and improved the soundstage and detail.

The Krell and CH work very well together.  Some people say that the Krell FBP750mcx has a bit of hardness and darkness, but I know it is not their fault, but the fault of the cables people used 20 years ago, and lack of other ajustments.

There are several things that are necessary to make the 750mcx achieve their full potential, to produce beautful sound, very open, powerfull, extended, no hardness, just excellent:

a) Each monoblock with dedicated 20amp 220V circuit.
b) Directly into the power outlets, no power filters
c) Have dealer change them to 220V
d) recapping by a Krell dealer
e) top amp stands such as SRA, HRS or Finite Elements (I use SRA VR 3.0)
f) great interconnects and speaker cables such as Echole Omnia and Kubala Realization
g) The Krell dealer installed furutech power cable receptacles in them, so I will be trying different power cables. I recently purchased two 20amp Kubala Realization to compare, and I am waiting to receive them soon.
h) Have great front end, preamp, speakers, cables, room, so that they do not limit the great sound that the 750mcx monoblocs can produce.

Cheers,

Important new upgrades:

a) Added Totaldac Twelve SE DAC plus Totaldac Server.  Now the Innuos Zenith SE is used as a NAS.  The Playback Designs was sounding great with the Innuos, but the Totaldac Twelve is even better: more detail, better soundstange and realism.

b) Upgraded speaker cables to Kubala Sosna Realization. Upgraded CH X1 power cable to Kubala Sosna Realization.  The Realization sounds better than the Elation: better extension and air on top and better realism on bottom, better soundstage focus.

I am very happy with the changes.

Several recent changes:

a) Added CH Precision L1 + X1 preamp.  Improvement over the excellent Krell Phantom in terms of detail, imaging, realistic timbre, and more open sound.

b) Added 2 pairs of Echole Omnia interconnects, replacing Echole Obsession.  Improved realism of instruments, detail, and more open sound.

c) Added Innuos Zenith SE (2Tb SSD) as server, replacing CAPS Zuma. Big improvement in soundstage and low frequencies.

d) Put my Playback Designs MPS-5 DAC on the RSA Scuttle mk.3 rack, replacing the turntable.  Big improvement for the DAC sound.

e) Put my analog front end rig in stand-by.  Sold Lyra Atlas and Tom Evams Mastergroove mk.2. I will focus on upgrading my digital front end for a while.

Hello Slowikpl,

One of my photos above show two 56uF Duelund CAST-cu capacitors being cooked using the power cable configuration.  The minimum time will vary depending on the size of the cap, but usually a minimum of 4 to 6 days.

Alan Kafton sent me detailed instructions.  Instead of copying and pasting his long email, I suggest you ask him directly at [email protected] and I am sure he will send you the instructions.

After I installed the caps in the crossovers, it took a few more days playing actual music to finish the conditioning.

New room treatment. Removed the previous, mostly absorption, treament in the wall behing the speakers and replaced with:
- Center with 3 difusers
- Lateral difusers
- Top and bottom with 150hz absortion for room mode
- Corners: two 40hz ressonators for room mode

The sound now has more air, more detail, and the bass is more controlled and faster.  Had to ajust a bit the speakers positioning and toe in. Very good improvement.

After many years without one, I purchased an analog front-end: (i) Technics SP10 mk3 modded by Steve Dobbins, (ii) Schroder LT tonearm, (iii) Lyra Atlas, (iv) Tom Evans Mastergroove mk2 phono preamp,  (v) SRA Scuttle mk3 rack.

Steve Dobbins came here to setup the turntable/tonearm/cartridge. Great guy, knows a lot about turntables.

Grannyring, Thank you.

The sound is at a completely different level now with all the upgrades, most important of them are the speaker/crossover mods.

I still have to put the crossovers in their final enclosures that I got from Japan.

Some time in the future I will do the rewiring. I already have the wires, and the two gallons of the Cascode sealing product.

I am still dealing with positioning and room modes. When the positiong gets final I will put under the speakers the eight stillpoint ultra 5 that are waiting in their boxes.

Grannyring, Thank you! What did you do regarding the extra lead of the Path Audio resistors? Did you connect with the circuit ground or with the - terminal of the resistor?

Dear Grannyring,

Thank you for the input. They are currently bare copper.

Do you think it is better to get them all tinned, or use shellac?

Better use silk or cotton?

Started buying an analog front end, after over 20 years without one!

So far I bought a Technics SP10 mk3 turntable modded by Steve Dobbins, and a Tom Evans Mastergroove mk2 phono preamp. I am deciding which arm, cartridge, and cables to go with them.

System edited: After a long time improving the active biamplification, listening, changing the pass xvr, measuring with REW many times, comparing to normal amplification with passive crossover (my modded external Duelund XOs), it became clear that the passive XO much much better, so I gave up the active biamp and will put a lot of equipment for sale. What matters is the music, and it is great now. In the external crossovers, changed the resistors from Duelund CAST to Path Audio. Changed the 220uF Solen caps parallel to 15" drivers, to Duelund Cast Mylar. Both were good improvements.

vn101606

C2300mc275, For the Krells I think the cap values are such that you can only fit eletrolitic caps, and wanted to have it done by Krell.

Grannyring and Lloydelle21, thanks for you kind works. It has been a lot of fun, and great to hear the improvements.

vn101606

Owner
Lloydelee21,

Regarding the biamping, we finished the biampming, which did involve removing the portion of the passive crossover driving the 15" drivers, so they were driven directly by the amps.

We did a lot of trying, measuring and listening to find the best active crossover settings. With the Pass you can, for example, set the first pole to one frequency, and the second and third poles to a second frequency, similar to the effect of the low pass passive crossover for the 15" drivers. I am sure much more testing should be done.

However, it did not bring a significant difference, so I moved back to passive crossover and will try again a few months from now. Potential reasons: (i) Maybe it is because I had one dedicated line for each mono amp, and then put two mono amps in each line, and the Krell 750mcx monos are supposed to have one line each, (ii) Maybe it is because the Duelund passive crossover is so good, and we introduce the Pass XVR additional components in the circuit, (iii) Maybe the settings of the active crossover could have been better.

I will see if I can fit two more dedicated lines. Additionally, one pair of Krell monos just had the full re-cap. Now the second pair is with the dealer to do the full re-cap.

Hopefully in my next attempt I will be able to achieve a substantial improvement. If not, I will just sell the second pair of Krells, the Pass XVR and extra cables.

Cheers,

System edited: Duelund RS caps now in the secondary path. Now waiting for a pair of 220uf Duelund CAST/Mylar caps (the last one). The RS caps in the secondary paths provided a nice improvement in the midrange.

Just ordered today 12 Duelund RS caps to replace all remaining Solen caps, those of the circuits that are in parallel. Looking forward to listending to them in a couple of months.

Grannyring,

Thank you! I have learned a lot from you!

They do sound great, much better than before. I recently heard two super speakers, with supper amps/preamp/cables/etc in NYC and I would not trade mine for any of the two, so I was happy about that.

Indeed I plan to change the remaining Solen components to better ones. Either Mundorf, Jupiter or the recently introduced Duelund RS.

We are still dealing with the Pass XVR adjustment, positioning, and room acoustics. When the positioning is finalized I will put in the Stillpoint 5 ultras under the speakers, and then focus on the rewiring of the speakers. I will place an order for the remaining caps and inductors soon. When they are in place, we will then make the final support/housing of the external crossovers.

System edited: Still working on the bi-amplification. The Crossover of the SC-VI is not a simple one. For example, the low pass of the dual 15" is a 6db slope starting at c. 42hz, and then becomes 18db slope starting at 200hz. It is possible to accomplish this with the Pass, setting different frequencies for poles 1, 2 and 3, but is trial and error, with measurement, because they interfere with each other, and you have to change frequencies to accomplish what you want. We have done the bi-amplication, so no using only the 3way portion of the XO, but still not done adjusting it. Lots of measuring, listening and adjusting. Interesting process.

Hello Jazzonthejudson,

Thanks for the recommendation about the direction of the Stillpoints!

I am still dealing with the crossover and biamplification. We will then keep working on speaker positioning and after we stop moving these huge speakers will put the Stillpoint Ultra 5 and report here.

Regarding the internal wiring, I will pick up the wire when I go to the US end of February, so it will still take a while.

You mentioned "New Owner of Dunlavy only advices to replace first the caps and then the resistors. A new Statesman is scheduled fo release this year". Did someone decide to bring the Dunlavy brand back to life? Do you have the link?

Thanks,

Thank you for your comments! I will post new photos soon.

Jazzonthehudson, and others who have experience with Stillpoint Ultra 5 (+ bases) under speakers: Do you think it is best to have them with larger surface pointing up, in contact with the speakers or the portion with the smaller diameter facing up, in contact with the speakers? I won't be able to screw them to the speakers (I have no idea of the diameter and would probably have to custom make). Difficult to be testing both alternatives since the speakers are quite heavy.

Barrysandy: The inductors that in the original XO had different AWG from those of the regular Duelund, I ordered custom made with the same AWG as the original. Measuring the frequency response and impulse response, I did not see any difference from the original inductors.

Theaudiotweak: The current wires look quite bad, specially the ones going to the 15" drivers and 8" drivers, so I will see if we are able to change them. I should be receiving the new hook up wires in February.

Thanks,

The big 56uF Caps go into the 5" mids crossover portion. They are really heavy and impressive looking. The Dunlavy SC-VI now sounds like a new speaker. The new tweeters and upgraded external crossovers made a big difference.

Regarding the tweeter hook up wire, If I don't like the Mundorf 1.5mm silver/gold, I will certainly try Neotech cryo copper: solid, perhaps 4 strands like you suggested, and also Cardas Litz. However, several people recommended the Mundorf 1.5mm S/G over copper.

What I am really looking forward now is to take out the LP portion of the 15"passive crossover and the HP portion of the 8" portion of the passive crossover and do the bi-amping.

Regarding the XO, I changed to Duelund CAST-cu all the resistors, but for the caps and inductors I changed only those in the signal path, but not the inductors or caps that in parallel to the drivers going to ground, leaving them Solen like the original. Do you think it would make a meaningful difference if I were to replace those too?

Hello Barrysandy!

Still tweaking the Duelund XO. The resistors brought out more deail, the capacitors made the speakers more open, a bit more dynamic, and took out the slight nasality that existed with the Solen capacitors. Eddie (also engineer, very DIY audiophile friend) and I have been changing and measuring. Regarding the inductors, sincerely I am not sure of the sonic impact, maybe changed too many things too quickly.

After comparing almost every tweeter in existence with the specs of the original Vifa D27T35-06 tweeters, replaced the them with the Seas top of the line SEAS Excel T29CF-002 (E0040) Crescendo Fabric Dome Tweeter. Listened, measured (both frequency response and impulse response), and the integration was great and a big upgrade. Better focus and more extension. It took a while to breack in, but after a week it was great.

We still have to finish tweaking the XO, and make the final enclosure. I also bought Neotech cryo solid UPOCC copper teflon covered hook up wire (12awg for 15"and 8", and 14awg for 5") and Mundorf 1.5mm solid silver/gold teflon covered for the tweeters, so we are going to rewire the speakers in Jan/Fev.

Hopefully we will measure and biamp the speakers next week, with the Pass XVR-1, second pair of Krell 750mcx, Echole obsession interconnects and NBS black label II speaker cables. There is a room mode creating a null around 130hz-160hz, which is right at the transition from the 15" to the 8" so we will try to solve that first by more positioning changes, but if not enough, also by tweaking the crossover points to create some positive bump in that region to decrease the null.

Received this week the 8x (stillpoints ultra 5 + ultra foot), so I should replace the BDR pucks/cones under the speakers with the stillpoints next week (need help given the weight of the speakers).

I will report the changes when they get done.

Happy Holidays!

Hello Jazz,

I sent you a PM.

Regarding the base of the Dunlavy SC-VI they are already supported by four BDR puck-cone-puck. I may try four Ultra SS 5 with base at some point in the future.

Cheers,

Vicente

Hello Jazzonthehudson,

I tried a few. I tried the Audience AR6-TS, and still have it in part of my system, but I prefer the PS Audio for the most part. I bought a PS P10, but have not received it yet. At some point I would like to try the Equi=Tech, perhaps to power the preamp.

I will take a look at the Symposium Svelte shelves. Thanks for the suggestion.

Cheers,

I should report that I have some room mode problems below 300hz and Dirac Live works quite well. I have been doing most of my listening with a Dirac Live filter that corrects only up to 1Khz.

I have also been doing more simulations, adjusting positioning, room treatment, etc to improve as much as possive.

I bought a second pair or Krell fbp 750mcx, a Pass XVR-1 3x and interconnects/cable to biamp the Dunlavy SC-VI. I will use the extra set of Krell exclusively for the 4 x 15” woofers.

Question for those with experience in biamping:

The passive crossover circuit for the parallel 15” drivers has a series inductor of 6.8mH (first order crossover), and then a RC circuit (Zobel – for impedance equalization) with R= 0R37 (6x 2R2 in parallel) and C of 220uF.

When I biamp with the new set of 750mcx, should I: (i) remove only the inductor and leave the parallel RC, or (ii) remove also the parallel RC?

Of course I can try both alternatives, listen and measure, but I would like your opinions.

Hi Barry,

Based on your experience, I bought a Cable Cooker Aniv. Ed. to cook the Duelunds and the cables. Nice improvement of the interconnects. It should take a couple of months to assemble the crossovers.

Regarding the DIRAC, my initial impression is quite good. It does not seem to take away anythiing, and allows one to decrease the room modes and correct, at least 80% - 90% the frequency response. I made filters with different slopes from lows to highs and so far I prefer with some slope.

I got the calibration file of the Earthworks M30 and have been trying many alternatives, including also changes in the room.

System edited: Started building a pair of external crossovers for the Dunlavy SC-VIs. The Duelund CAST capacitors, inductors, and resitors have arrived (photo). Also bought original Solen caps and inductors so the first phase will be to make the original crossover just replacing resitors to Duelund, then change one CAP or inductor per turn to measure an listen. I will keep the two original crossovers intact. It will take a while, but I am really looking forward to it. A colleague who is also an engineer, but much more into DIY will be buinding the crossovers, and we will be measuring and listening after each step.

Hi James,

You are more than welcome to come. Let's schedule.

I find the CAPS ZUMA with Joule III much better than the MacMini/Pure Music.

I will send you a PM.

Hello Arthursmuck,

It is quite transparent, does not take detail away, and makes a meaningfull difference. It is much better than the TACT 2.2X I used to use several years ago.

There is a lot you can do in terms of the curves, so I have to spend more time adjusting. I will also try adjusting only a window in the lower frequencies where there is the effect of the room modes.

You can use it for the trial period anyway and hear in your system. I suggest you get good measurement equipment. I got an earthworks M30 and a roland Quad-capture to do the measurents.

Hello Paulo,

I am using four sets of BDR Puck, cones, Puck (all mk.IV) per speaker, locate below the four wholes (so as to close them). I have to tell you that I don't know if they sound better or worse than with the bases. I lost the metal part that connects the bases to the speakers so if you ever disassemble the bases and can let me know the dimension of the treads and length, perhaps I will try with the bases again.

Hi Vito,

I am running Lion, only because I haven't yet spent the time yet to create another partition to install Snow Leopard.

The USB-X box is running perfectly with Lion OS, however, Pure Music can not run integer mode with Lion, and can not send DSD to USB-X with Lion.

System edited: Changing the Krell FPB 750mcx monos (at Krell Dealer) to 220V improved the sound (more air, more detail, more control). The NBS Black Label II 4ft spades speaker cables are a small but noticeable improvement over the NBS Omega 0. The new cables still have to go through the 50hour recommended burn in, so they may improve further.

I have heard several preamps in my system. For my taste in music (pop, rock, mpb, tecno, jazz), right now the ranking (from best to worst) is:

#1 Krell KCT (great imaging, detail, great bass, realistic everything, very happy with its sound)
#2 VTL 7.5 series 3 (a bit better highs than KCT, worse bass and imaging)
#3 Audiopax Model 5 SE (great bass, imaging)
#4 Levinson 380S
#5 Dartzeel (very lean on the bass)

Given my preference for the Krell KCT, I am now looking forward to listening to the new Krell Phantom.

Cheers.

Bigamp,

Thanks for you comments. I have a great system too! I am looking forward to these 500 hours of playback designs burn-in to finish (end of September). My Krell 750mcx monos, an Audience aR6-TS, 3 lessloss power cables, and two three-shelve racks should arrive next week. This weekend an electrician should install a third 20amp dedicated line.

I heard the VTL 7.5 series 3 and they sound great with the 700cx. I hope I will be able to hear the Dartzeel 18ns in my system (I want to hear how it sounds in terms of bass slam/visceral, the other attributes from what I read are exceptional, but bass is very important to me). I like to hear mostly pop, rock, jazz, MPB (Brazilian Music), tecno, very little classic.

Cheers.

Thanks. I noticed this thing about the 32 vs.202 supply, however, they discontinued the #32 and the #202 is in production, so maybe there are just more Evo 202 produced. I will try to get a 202 to test in my system.

Heykay, I have not, I am looking for a comparison between the Evo 202 and the Levinson 32, I have read only about them individually.

I am thinking about my next preamp. I can't test them in my system because I am in Brazil and this is not an option. I read the Levinson 32 is better than the 380S I have, but the higher frequecies are not perfect. I read little about the Krell Evo 202, and since I have Krell FBP700CX I an use the CAST connectors, but I have read no comparison between the Levinson 32 and the Krell Evo 202. Another option seems to be tube, like the ARC Ref 3, but it seems they have great mids and highs, but not so much control on the lows. Any oppinions/experiences with these three preamps?

I am excited, I may have found the solution for my 31hz (10db)and second order 62hz (5db) room modes: Bag End E-Trap ($1600). I have read a lot about them and seem it will solve the problem. Now I have to get one and have a friend bring to Brazil! I am waiting for the PS Audio PWT which is promising, and also thinking about upgrading the Levinson 380S to Levinson 32 in the future.

System edited: I moved to a new apartment, with a smaller audio/video room, which is a problem with my Dunlavy SC-VIs speakers. The room is (in meters) 5.2m(d)x4m(w)x2.77m(h). The front and back walls are treated so the mids and highs are exceptional. The measured frequency response of the speakers in this room are within +- 3db for frequencies above 120hz, the sound engineer was amased by the sound and the measurements. However, it has a 10db room mode at 31hz and 5db at 62hz. I used to have a TACT, but I don't find it transparent enought, so I am not using it anymore. The RGPG sonex plate type II only goes down to 40hz so it won't solve this problem. I am considering purchasing the Rives Audio Parc. Anybody with experience using a Parc?

System edited: I just replaced my Levinson 360S. I purchased the EmmLabs DCC2 SE DAC. I first tried it as a DAC only and could hear improvements throughout the frequency range, but more notedly in the bass region. I then conected the DCC2 SE directly to my Krell 700cx using its preamp outs, however, the sound using the Levinson 380S as a preamp was clearly superior, much more detailed, so I am using the DCC2 SE only as a DAC.

Dear friends:

Jimateo - Congrats for your SC-VI. I believe I have the manuals, since I bought my SC-VI (#160) new. I will look for them, and after I find I will scan and send to you. The best place to read about them is really the Stereophile review, still available, with many useful comments.

Pdreher - I am moving in three weeks to a new apartment. The room has much better accoustics and has room treatment in the front and back walls, besides an accoustically isolated wall and door. I had an accoustic engineer model the room and propose the treatment. After installing the equipment we will measure the response to see if it is necessary to install the RPG Plates type II, or not. I will post a photo after I move.

Regarding the pre-amplifier, I noticed a great improvement in sound with the Levinson 380s after using the PS Audio (P300 and now PPP). I just bought the EMM Labs DCC2 SE, so I will experiment with it as a preamp in comparison with the Levinson, but I have to pick up the EMM Labs in Miami and it may take a few months, since I live in Brazil and don´t go there often.

Shadorne - The Krell 700cx provided a great improvement in the sound of the SC-VI, compared with the 200S. I use a Stuart Filmscreen 100" firehawk with a Sharp Z10000, which I plan to upgrade to a Sony VW200 soon.

Cdma - thank you for the suggestion, but it would be hard to bring a new power amplifier to Brazil to test it.
