Description

For the enjoyment of music.  Lot's of changes over the years.  I typically won't buy something unless I can listen to it in my system.   Spending a lot of time recently searching out well recorded and interesting music via hi res downloads.   I have a really nice vinyl collection mostly Jazz and pop.  Digital I'm filling out my classical titles and more modern recordings.  Jan '16

Been spending a lot of time over the holidays listening to digital.   Which is saying a lot for a vinyl fanatic.   A few weeks ago I took delivery on a dCS Vivaldi upsampler which is really changing my perception of redbook cd's and really most digital formats.  Recording quality still matters-just like vinyl.  However I'm very close to saying I no longer prefer a format.  Vinyl, SACD, Redbook CD's, Hi Res downloads all have their attributes.   It's the music and the recording that take precedence now.  Before it was always Vinyl #1 for me.

I have a fellow vinyl addict up in the Boston area that recently listened to a Vivaldi stack on redbook only.  I think he now understands my point of view on good digital.

I am slowly moving from redbook & 16/44 downloads from dCS Filter 1 to Filter 5 on the dCS Vivaldi upsampler.  Then either outputting to DSD F1/F3 or DXD at F5/F6.

This weekend I've been settling down on dCS Vivaldi upsampler at F5, outputting to DXD then either F5 or F6 and skipping DSD on the Vivaldi DAC.  Seems to be more incisive, wring out more textures in the mid bass, render back of hall details more easily.

I am starting to be able to hear what each filter brings.  Takes some work...they all sound good...but are subtly different.  Not sure I could name what filter was what in a blind test...but I bet I can hear something is different in a blind test.

My vinyl, that I still love, just isn't getting the playing time since the upsampler arrived.   That's a huge statement for me..been happily spinning vinyl for 35 years since I was about 15 with my first Denon table and Denon MC cartridge.

I am still shocked by how well a nicely recorded redbook cd can sound off the dCS Vivaldi transport via the upsampler.   Really opened up my music library !! Which is what our hobby is all about !

Hi, it's all 1 inch thick pine boards. Stained to match the beams that were the only wood in the room. All the wood you see either contains Owens Corning fiber or Owens Corning fiber board (very specific types) to damp bass (membrane corner traps) or other frequencies for the defraction on the sides or front wall.

Rive's Audio helped my and my dealer with the design...a pic of the blue print is in the details of my system page.

I need to take some new pics soon...some equipment changes like dCS Vivaldi stack, Nagra Classic amp and all Transparent Opus Gen 5 cabling

Dctom, The Vivaldi upsampler arrived ~week ago. First weekend ever not listening to vinyl. My 50/50 mix above maybe changing. Very impressed with the Vivaldi up sampler. Redbook cd's are so resolute but relaxed. I've never heard redbook this way and have dozens of cd's that I haven't listened to in years...but I am now.

Hi Brian, hope you're doing well ! I have a wireless router and NAS drive showing up today. I'll set up a 2nd network in my home dedicated for this. And use wired ethernet to connect to the upsampler.

I'll let you know how it goes !

Hi, the dCS is very good. I still love my vinyl, I had two cartridges so I thought I'd sell one and use the other for a while. (Allaerts MC2 Finish). It has a different perspective vs the Atlas.

I will say before the Vivaldi, I was about 85% vinyl 15% digital. Now 50/50. The dCS Vivaldi is that good...I've been experimenting with hi rez downloads. DSD from analog tape and native dsd/dxd recordings are VERY good.

I have the Vivaldi up sampler arriving today. This should improve my hi rez downloads even more by allowing me to skip USB and stream right from a NAS drive...

I really need to update my system page. With some new pics etc etc.

I sold my (beloved) Lyra Atlas to help fund my new amp. Also sold are the Ayre MXR's which I've had for awhile now. The Ayre's powered WP8's, Maxx 2's, Maxx 3's and most recently Rockport Altairs. I also have a Transparent Opus power cord on loan. As well as have recently bought a few more Shunyata Sigma power cables. My Transparent Opus MM2 speaker cables are back at the factory getting updated to Gen 5. And I'm back to using my Allaret's MC2 Finish cartridge. Which is pretty special in its own right - just a bit diff from the Lyra.

The Nagra Classic I heard side by side with my MXR's, MXR-20's, Nagra MSA and VPA's. I still have a curiously at trying Robert Koda amps...he might be coming out with a new model soon. The Nagra Classic amp was a better match for me and my system than all I've tried to date at home (MXR's, MXR-20, VPA, MSA). I have not tried the Koda amps yet.

The Nagra Classic amp is very much like our Nagra VPS/MPS/VFS. Very transparent. Very resolved. A bazillion colors and textures. A touch (ever so light of warmth) and very even top to bottom. To my surprise, the Nagra Classic controls my Rockport 15 inch woofers better...the bass is deeper, more articulate and much more nuanced/textured/resolute. Plus this amp is QUIET. Which I suspect is part of it's sound quality. The Ayre's beat it on very loud...those amps NEVER ran out of gas.

Best of amp, the Classic amp is nicely priced for what it can do. Plus a very low heat output. The amp get's hot...but doesn't emit much heat. If that makes sense...

Major system changes.  First sold my (beloved) Lyra Altas to help fund a change on amps.  So will use my Allaerts MC2 Finish for the time being.  It's a great cartridge also.
The Ayre MXR's are sold.  After careful consideration, I've bought a Nagra Classic Amp.  Stereo.  Class A up to 18watts.  Which most of my listening it seems to stay in Class A.  A lot more to post as things break in !

Norm, I looked up the Paul Hynes PS, looks very interesting. When I demo'd the Nagra MPS, the AC side of it is excellent. More focus, bigger stage, more dynamic. The Paul Hynes seems like a big cost/performance deal...for sure

dctom, I've read many great things about your preamp. One of these days I'll get to hear one. I tried one battery unit with my Nagra (Red Wine Audio Black lighting), it was a improvement. The Nagra MPS betters it. And appears to be doing something more than just a battery...when you open he cover of the Nagra the battery is connected to some circuitry with a bank of caps and I'm sure knowing Nagra the ac power supply does little harm on the charging side of things...

I can't wait to hear this for more than the 2 day demo I had !

Hi Breezer, my favorite arm so far is the Spiral Groove Centroid. I've ran my Altas on 3 arms, all are good. Triplanar, Schroeder LT and currently the centroid.

I've also heard the Atlas on a friends SME V-12, it's great on that arm as well...

My Nagra VPS phono stage with Nagra VFS (isolation plates) is a fantastic match with the Lyra. Custom Nagra SUTs are part of the mc card for this phono stage. I've tried other SUT's...the Nagra SUTs that come with the MC card are special. I have a Nagra MPS (battery power supply) on order..takes this phono stage even higher in performance.

System edited: A few changes over the last few months. First was adding a Shunyata DPC-6 v2 and isolating my turntable motor controller, clock, transport and Apple TV from my Triton. The dpc-6 v2 is plugged into the Triton which also has my phono stage and preamp into it. The dpc-6 v2 is a very worthwhile upgrade. Next swapped a Transparent Opus mm2 for a Transparent Magnum Opus from my phono stage to my preamp. Holy smokes...I have now have the tone arm to phono Transparent Magnum Opus on order. (So going from transparent opus gen 5 to magnum opus)

Hey Peter,

VTA is via a set screw in the top of the arm. It's highly damped with resistance to turn. It's not really designed for changing for each record. Azimuth is via a heavier set screw in the counter weight (opposite side of pic. Anti skating via a weights, string, 2 ruby bearings...

This counter weight is very close to pivot...but also to the sides, underneath and in front of the pivot...part of the stabilization of the uni pivot bearing...

it's a clever design, with most settings slightly hidden...but all right there...

jfrech

Owner
It's for sure not a one trick pony...very even frequency balance top to bottom. I think some unipivots have been knocked over the years on the bass. Not this arm...tight, deep, dementional, loads of texture...but I'd say this across the spectrum...

jfrech

Owner
I had to have the arm board custom made at a machine shop. It's the same metal as Grand Prix uses for their arm board and all CNC machined then bead blasted. My dealer was crucial here with all the measurements and really a turn key solution. All this said..the arm board was only $400 so pretty ok.

I have about 5 days listening now on the Centroid. I can say it's the quietest arm (in the groove) I've ever had. And that pays dividends in transparency, resolution, depth etc. I mentioned above about it being firm...their is a addictive solidity to the sound-while being transparent and natural...things are locked in space and the density of the notes comes through.

The absolute best of best vs other arms is the cueing. it's un damped...but perfectly machined threading that drops it right where you want...after a few uses of the cueing...you get the hang of it and really appreciate the cleverness of it's mechanism.

I'm impressed.

Hey Spirit...hope all is going well. You'll never hear me bash the Schoeder LT. It's a excellent arm...and the engineering/geometry is unrivaled in my experience...as well as it's SQ.

We all get that itch to try new things :-)...part of what I love about this hobby...

jfrech

Owner
Hi Albert,

The first thing you do notice is the noise floor...it's lower than any other arm I've had (SME IV.Vi, Triplanar, Schroeder). Which brings a resolution and sense of music launching with speed and stopping with speeed and then just decaying when it should... Music has a "firmness" and a "wetness" to the notes....in this respect it reminds me very much of your SME arm - they are similar in this regard and welcome compliment to the Atlas.

The Schoeder LT was excellent at the beginning and end of LP's...but I don't seem to miss that as much as I thought...this Spiral Grove has plenty of good attributes also...

I only have about 24 hours on this arm...I don't want to proclaim anything other than it's VERY good and certainly one of the very best. And that my toes are tapping :-)

Hi Peter, in my Vinyl side...the Opus MM2 from the phono stage to pre hasn't changed yet, just the Ref MM MM2 from pre to amp changed to Opus Gen 5. This is a pretty big improvement...feels like a new phono stage or cartridge. It is not subtle. Much more density on the notes, better portrayal in space...better resolution and better at the extremes.

On Digital 2 cables have changes. The Opus MM2 from Dac to pre went to Gen 5 and then the above pre to amp cable. It's a similar change to the above.

If you ever get a chance to try Opus MM2 or Gen 5, I think you'll be impressed vs your Ref XL.

Hi good to hear from you. You've made some BIG changes also. I've always heard great things about the Dart pre...especially it's phono stage. I kinda wish they'd make a separate phono stage...

I have not heard the Ref 2SE at home. I have heard it in a system that I was familiar with and side by side with the smaller Boulder phono. Honestly, I liked the Boulder a touch better.

I think you're right on the Nagra...although it's hung in there a VERY long time...and I've yet to hear something in my system that beats it. I do suspect the Allnic H5000 DHT will beat it. And some others...I've been patiently waiting to see if Robert Koda will ship a phono stage...to match my pre...

What's next for you?

John Quick from dCS came by my home today along with my dCS dealer, Casey from Ne Plus Ultra. Lot's of listening, mostly digital and some vinyl. We had a fascinating discussion on digital filters, how dCS develops them (they write their own code here). I also mentioned how the dCS Vivaldi DAC and Trans clearly improved the system...but the clock was very profound for me and a bit unexpected. dCS is using a new clocking architecture, better power supplies and better vibration/chassis.

We then listened to filters. DSD F1 and F3. I had been using F1 but now prefer F3 for DSD. A touch less hardness, a touch more resolution comes through. Maybe a slightly warming to the sound.

For redbook, we went back and forth from up sampling to DSD and DXD. I decided DXD provided more air, a bit more focus, and slightly more cohesive sound. Then we tried F4, F5, F6 on DXD. F5 gave a quicker dynamic things started and stopped faster. F4 and F6 a slightly wider stage but slightly more reserved. In the end all the filters sound good...system matching, recording quality, and listener preference really dictates what's best.

We then moved to vinyl, playing kenny burrel midnight blue on Music Matters 33 and the Analog Productions 45 version. The 33 was better...the 45 sounded a step slower in comparison and a bit less dynamic. Go figure.

Net net, I am sticking to my prior posts about digital vs vinyl. The software now really dictates ultimate sound quality...both formats are enjoyable.

I also recently tweaked a few settings on my vinyl (leveled...cold weather must have settled something) and very slight tweak to VTF. Again assuming the cold weather effects...

My Vinyl is sounding better then ever...but the move to DSD F3 stepped the digital up a notch to.

Owner
Charles, thanks for your comments and I always love reading your system thread !

jfrech

Owner
Peter, I think they do sound different. However the two sacds I used as a test, both came from master tapes. And I suspect tube preamps given that time period. I am not sure how that is biasing what I hear ...

jfrech

Owner
I thought so too!

jfrech

Owner
Lloyd, that's a good question. What the Vivaldi is doing differently is how it places things in space...much more 3d like than the Scarlatti.

Also how it's presenting more information..but more naturally..this resolution isn't just a little better vs Scarlatti..it's a lot...and again...it's less aggressive which appears to me a contradiction. But I've notice the best components seem to pull this trick off vs what you're comparing it to.

And finally the sense of timing..the ebb and flow of the music is better than the Scarlatti...Hope this paints the differences I am hearing...

jfrech

Owner
HI Peter,

The Vivaldi is more expensive than my vinyl front end. And notice I didn't say bettered it...just that digital had caught up.

The clock brought a sense of power...but more delicate, unraveling things better. And more resolution and better placement in space. I also think the dac and trans has fully broken in over the last month or so...

Keep in mind, on this test we only used 2 recordings. Both were Acoustic Sounds reissues on Riverside label. Chet Baker "Chet" the SACD and the 33. The other was a 45 vs SACD Wes Mongomery Trio "a dynamic new sound." Both recordings were from a master tape.

I think on these 2 recordings the digital has better resolution and placement in space (like the brushes on the drum head). The Vinyl the reverb on the guitar strings as well as the warmth of tone of the stings vibrating. Honestly it's more a difference than one is better. But just that last statement is saying something for digital.

jfrech

Owner
System edited: Added dCS Vivaldi Clock and updated a few pics. I had a friend stop by today. And I'll likely get kicked off the forums for saying this...my digital has caught my vinyl. My friend and I tried several recordings 33's, 45's and SACD's. All cut from the same master tape. The digital and vinyl do a few things differently...but couldn't say one was better. It's been a interesting journey adding one dCS Vivaldi piece at a time and retiring the corresponding Scarlatti piece. Starting with the DAC, then the Trans and finally the clock. Everything else remained constant...

Hi Ken, it's 26 ft long, 18.4 wide and 3 alcoves on one side 4ft wide x 3ft long each. and a office/record storage area in the back of the room that adds another 10ft x 8ft. It's a complicated room that i had Rives Audio design custom treatments for...

jfrech

Owner
HI on the Typhon...yes a little...I don't remember that about the soundstage...to me each of the notes were delivered with more energy from a blacker background...pulling the plug feels like putting a blanket over the speakers...it's a slow break in...not much current flow through it...

jfrech

Owner
Saint: that's a great way to put it for my digital... :-) !!

jfrech

Owner
you know good question...they might...but also I suspect it adds a variable to existing model...so maybe only when something new is released (like a point version or a new model would be my guess...

jfrech

Owner
Hi Pradeep, the thing about the dCS Vivaldi does...is draw you in...like vinyl...also has a image width, depth, 3d quality like vinyl. I keep saying like vinyl ...

Yes on the Transparent cables. Andy uses them in his listening room and I know your Rockports and mine are internally wired with Transparent. I do think Andy Payor also designed the carbon fiber network enclosures on the Opus...so some synergy at work I suspect.

I am still digging my Nagra VPS phono stage. I almost bought a battery supply to power it last week (Red Wine Audio Black Lightning)...but ended up sticking with the Nagra AC supply. I've asked my dealer to order a Nagra MPS power supply to demo with the Nagra VPS.

The battery does lower the noise floor..allowing a more "pure" sound. I felt the AC supply energized the notes in a more interesting way...which is why I'd like to try the Nagra MPS.

I plan on demoing a Allnic H3000 soon (demo'd the 3000v before and have a suspicion the rectifier tube wasn't the best and the extra switches is the variable RIAA signal path might not yield as pure of a sound). I also want to demo a Lamm LP2.1...never know unless you try it at home...

Did you end up liking the Lyra Atlas better than the Transfiguartion Proteus?

jfrech

Owner
Hmm on the jumpers. I have no experience here. I can only spend your money with out any data to back it up :-)

jfrech

Owner
Lloyd/Saint...THANKS...I have about 24 hours playing time on the transport now. It's simply better to the point of the former, in comparison, didn't sound right--and trust me...the Scarlatti Trans sounded excellent for 3 years in my system.

Really 3 things strike me right now on the Vivaldi Trans:

1) how the Vivaldi Transport unravels and organizes the notes is a more profound way. You can pick apart some instrument at the back or side of the stage and just immerse your self in it. It's there...it's real...it's part of the band...but it's its own thing. And the precision of the timing of the music...how you can head the piano leading the violin..or the other way around...vs them just playing together. I notice things in recordings I just hadn't noticed before....the musicians intent...

2) the bass. so much more defined, refined, powerful, deeper, delicate and tuneful along with more linear.

3) how it places things in space. it's diff than the scarlatti transport. a guitar is more guitar sized...but the reverberations of the strings are big in space. The pluck if a string is a defined, small event. But the sound the string makes as it decays into a large space...isn't as small as the original pluck of that string...

All of this really...is what vinyl has done for me. Now the dCS Vivaldi seems to be doing a few things better (like the bass) and a few things more (a lot more) analog like (like the specificity of the images and the unraveling of the notes)

The Vivaldi DAC sounded great after a few hours...then after 2-3 months really relaxed and opened up...guessing the Vivaldi Transport will follow a similar path.

I'll never give my vinyl and I know I've been saying this...but I do plan to upgrade my phono stage one day soon...

I know I've been on a digital craze as of late...but vinyl never ceases to amaze me...a few tweaks on the arm (VTF from 1.78 to 1.74), a 1/8 turn to the left on the cartridge mounting plate clamp screw, and maybe a 1/16 up on vat...and bam.

Listening to the new Music Matters 33's. Joe Henderson, Grant Green, and the Kenny Burrell. These to me sound a bit better than the 45's...really well done jazz vinyl

jfrech

Owner
Steve Dobbins stopped by tonight w/ Arnie. Spun some vinyl and very very slight tweaks to the arm (nudge lower on VTF, a nudge higher on VTA). The Schroeder LT arm continues to amaze me !

Owner
I'd love to stop by again...and I know that 30/12 is pretty amazing. And I still LOVE my vinyl...I am NOT saying digital is now best always. I am saying it's doing some really interesting things that I've never heard from digital before. And, depending on the recording, I may prefer digital based on certain qualities in the software that the new DAC is bringing out now...

jfrech

Owner
Hi Peter, I've been wondering about this. I wish I had a explanation. There is just a preciseness, while being so natural, that pulls you in...

jfrech

Owner
Hey, I am really impressed with the dCS Vivaldi dac. I never ever thought I'd say this..but it surpassed my vinyl in how it conveys the inflections and timing and intent of the musicians in the recording. It's just so interesting to listen to. It's not like digital is better or vinyl is better. They are both great. Vinyl has a inherent warmth (a friend called it more full bodied) which i agree...but it's not like it's better...more a Merlot vs Pinot Noir...they are both good.

It's still, like vinyl, dependent on the recording.

jfrech

Owner
Gayle, really appreciate you stopping by. We don't all get together enough !

Thank you for the compliments !

#95 - frankly I am thrilled with the improvement. The move from Ref MM2 to Opus MM2 is a bigger move. If Ref XL to Ref MM is like 1 => 2 Ref MM to Opus is like 1=>3 or 4. It's pretty cool...

I am starting to hear comments about a new line over Opus...but not a replacement for MM2 versions...anyway, I am sure they'll take care of us and our recent MM2 purchases if it's true. What I like about Transparent !

jfrech

Owner
Lloyd, I have to admit...as the new Transparent Opus MM2 cable is broken in or nearly broken in, the system is sounding like never before. Especially the bottom end...but really everywhere how it handles the inflections and spacing and movement of the musicians. It's hard to turn it off...

Honestly, I think the Opus cabling is like a serious equipment change...some can argue on the pricing...they can't really argue on the sound improvement...

Lloyd, Just sitting here listening...and I missed some things that are better with the Opus MM2. First is the specific places it puts instruments on the stage and how it separates not only each instrument but each note that's being played. 2nd is the power/impact and better energy than the Ref MM and finally the quickness in which the cable allows the music to start and stop.

All of this combines for a more interesting listening session. It's more information like I said before...but it's also delivered in a better way. This 2nd element may be it's best traight...

jfrech

Owner
Hey Lloyd, the Opus SC have incredibly relaxed, bass deepened, resolution improved...it's just a better cable pure and simple over the Ref MM.

So right now I have Opus MM2 from Phono to Pre. Ref MM MM2 Dac to pre and Pre to amp. Then the Opus MM2 SC...

My dealer also had a Opus MM2 interconnect I was able to try for a few days vs my Ref MM off my Dac. It was fully broken in and tuned for my dCS dac. So we listened to one song...put in the Opus MM2 interconnect and bamm. On the first guitar note...it's the same stuff with Transparent. Lower noise, deeper bass, more textures everywhere and much better resolution. Over the next few days I just enjoyed the Opus IC...then yesterday put the Ref MM IC back in...it definitely is a notch down down not take but a few moments to hear the diff.

I do think the more Opus MM2 I add it's more like 1+1=3...with it all working together it seems to improve more than just a single cable (even though you can clearly hear a single cable.)

Good point...I think the Koda's volume control is all hand made and takes the better part of a day to build. Only so many settings in this arrangement...I don't have a issue and this is coming from a Nagra that was infinitely adjustable via a pot. Although I am sure this system matching and preference, so I can certainly understand how others may feel...

Here's a pic of the volume control if you scroll down some

http://www.inner-magazines.com/news/494/57/Koda-Takumi-K-10-pre-amp/

jfrech

I think our Koda K10's have only 6db, I agree the volume notches as the very top of the scale get more course...so can understand your point. I think the design factor that Koda considered was why cut back the gain from the source only to amplify it once again...therefore less volume attenuation, plus superior volume attenuation (have you seen a pic of our volume control -holy smokes is that a piece of work) equals better sound from his design.

As far as your PureDac, using the 3rd highest setting shouldn't matter...other than the coursness, each setting won't change the sound as in some preamp designs.

I've read some very nice things about your phono stage.

jfrech

Owner
Hi Albert, you know me, I am always willing to try anything. However, I do think the phono stage is the thing I need to figure out next....with kids in college the funds are a bit thin now!

jfrech

Owner
Tbg, awesome ! I really love my K10. It's one of those products that I am not sure I can ever ever sell. It's just pure music. The course volume doesn't seem to bother me much...it's a set and forget.

I don't have gain issues at all. Could be how it matches to my amps and sources. My Digital plays about 1 o'clock on the scale...vinyl about 2 o'clock...

What's the rest of your system?

System edited: updated pics with Opus MM2 speaker cable

Owner
Hello, I have a mix of Ref MM MM2 interconnect and Opus MM2. Opus from the phono stage and Ref MM MM2 from dac to pre and pre to amp...

I know :-) your familiar with the Transparent break in process, 1st few hours sounded ok...yesterday was hard to listen to, this am seems much better...I am sure I have 2-3 weeks here before it quits moving around. Already it's more resolved, more dynamic and more spatial...

Loading is different on phono stages...My Nagra is part transformer step up and part active gain vs your all active gain ARC. That said, I have my loading at 840 ohm. Doesn't surprise me what you say on different cartridges. I've loved my 5 lyre's over the years..you can find some thing that is better in a area here or there...but the Lyra's seem always hold a edge in some important areas...

jfrech

Owner
I missed the 20/3...just looked for it ! I really want to get a phono stage next...then a 2nd table down the road. Pretty sure I'd like a SME again...yours sounds fantastic ! and I've always said I missed my 20/2

The speaker cables were fixing a issue...the left was a bit short with the Rockports vs the Wilsons (The left Rockport liked being in a diff spot about 2-3 feet further from the center...my room is a little asymmetrical). So I got the length I really needed and a upgrade in performance.

My phono stage list has been narrowed to the Robert Koda (if it get's released), the Allnic H5000 (Arnie and Albert just love theirs), the Tron 7GT and the Lamm...

I heard a all Lamm system recently and was VERY impressed.

Since, I now have a solid state pre and amp...really want a tube phono...anyway I am tapped out for bit money wise...so we all know how that is !

jfrech

Owner
well it's in a diff league already. Bass textures...dynamics....wider deeper image...even more quiet. I can tell it's not quite settled yet...13-14 hours playing time is all. If any indications from my Opus Interconnect...it maybe 2 weeks before it really struts it's stuff...

When is that plane ticket to Texas? :-) Saw the British Airways plane in Austin...looks like they are flying a dreamliner london-Austin...not a bad ride i bet !

jfrech

Owner
#95, that's great to read about I was pretty certain breaking in would get you to a happy state. I just rec'd my Opus MM MM2 speaker cables last night (up from Ref MM MM2)...just have about 12 hours on them now...

How do you like your new phono stage? read great things about it...

jfrech

Owner
Sounds like it's beginning to come together...I bet it improves a bit more...especially the bottom end as well as the resolution and that musical and effortnessless

jfrech

Owner
Hakan, how are things...been about another 5 days...

jfrech

Owner
Hello Hakan...how are they now? with what 40 hours ??

jfrech

Owner
Have to agree with Lloyd here !

jfrech

Owner
Hi Number 95...I remember that post! The new cables will settle down some, bass will deepen, highs mellow and will be more immersive. This happens toward the end...250-300 hours or so...I suspect it's also presenting more information...

I doubt you'll think it went backwards in any area soon...I'd like to get more Opus MM2 one day...right now fully wired with Ref MM2 and one set of Opus MM2 interconnects...

The Transparent Ref XL digital cables have about 180 hours on them now...they should be through the breakin process....

I can enthusiastically say this is a major upgrade going dual aes vs firewire. Much better resolution, much better demensionality, lower noise (it's so quiet now-which is weird to say on digital since it's already quiet...but it's true)...which allows the dynamics and textures to really jump and/or bloom.

The clock cables alone were a improvement.

I feel like I got a new digital front end.

Substantial improvements across the board...nothing went backwards. If you have a dCS stack...you owe it to yourself to try these cables...

jfrech

Owner
System edited: Added Transparent Reference XL Digital Cables. Dual AES. Plus 2 Tran Ref XL Digital BNC to BNC for the clock...

jfrech

Owner
I updated my dCS Scarlatti dac and trans software. This allowed me to swap my Audioquest Diamond firewire with Dual AES Transparent Ref XL digital cables. This new software allows all sample rates and DSD via Dual AES via something now in the Scarlatti menu called "Vivaldi mode"

The Transparent digital cables. need 200 hours to break in...I have about 18 hours. But holy smokes is this a BIG improvement. I feel like I got a new DAC or something...will post more as the cables break in...but Dual AES is clearly the better path for dCS Scarlatti owners.

jfrech

Owner
wow...and first congrats. it's always great to get a huge bump in sound quality from a small amount of $$'s. Glad the Red Wine Audio Battery worked out for you !

Maybe I'll have to give the straingauge a try one day soon...before I make anymore upgrades to my vinyl...

Thanks for reporting back and so very happy for you !

jfrech

Owner
hmmm....I think you can flip the switch on the back....so when listening on battery...but ac just to keep stuff warm....I think it works this way...anyway sounds like your getting to hear the benefits already...

thank you for keeping me up to date !

jfrech

Owner
With the nagra it lowers noise, more purity, lil more resolution, but looses a bit dynamically. So with my Lyra I like the battery best, with the Allaerts ac....but I have spent a lot on power conditioning and cords. Red wine is a far better deal in this context. Curious what u think over the weekend...

jfrech

Owner
You're welcome in Texas ANYTIME !! I don't like waiting, I'm pretty impatient, but in this case..it's so worth it ;-) ! Think you'll get it in Jan? When you do, I look forward to your thoughts...

jfrech

Owner
Like it? It's transformational for my system. Honestly, with this arm, I'd put my vinyl front end up against nearly anything. I am sure a few in the 50K+ range can nip it here and there....but it maybe a 3 steps ahead 1 back kind of thing..

The arm is just a joy use, pretty much a set and forget set up. I was a little worried about not having a VTA adjustment for diff record thicknesses. It's not a problem, I've had others like Albert Porter not worry about this (like with his SME V-12)

I was planning on a phono stage upgrade in a few months...with this arm and the new Transparent Opus MM2 cable I just put from my Phono to Pre I am really considering staying put (famous last words I know...). My Nagra has really surprised me in it's ability to step up with the better arm and better cabling...

jfrech

Owner
HI Paul, yes heard the Aviors many times at my dealer. Also the Wilson's and I owned the Maxx 3 for a few years. All are great speakers and do something a little differently...

jfrech

Owner
Ps68, thanks ! Now that Transparent Opus MM2's have more time on em..they are really getting nice. So Lloyd REALLY doesn't want to here what I am about to say! I have about 10 hours on the Opus MM2's now and they are really opening up and relaxing and oh my the dynamics, how it portrays and unravels each instrument in space...the resolution...but so natural...even the quiet little sounds at the back of the stage are so clearly heard now...Honestly, I feel like I got a new phono stage...it's that BIG of a deal...

jfrech

Owner
I just have 90 min playing time on the Opus MM2's. But I can already say the bass articulation is greatly improved, the dynamics up and down the frequency spectrum, things are SO much more quiet allowing all sorts of resolution to emerge...It's a much nicer cable...not a single step backwards...again only 90 min playing time...I can't wait to get 100 hours on it...very very promising...the improvement with 90 min is already worth it...it's making my vinyl just be more interesting to listen to...more live...more real. Pretty special cable....

Merry Christmas !

Good luck on the black lightning, I know it's frustrating...but seems like great customer service and I'd guess a shipping issue...no telling though. I keep hear great things on those Straingauge cartridges! Thanks for the tip...

Sunnyboy, good to hear from you...I didn't get a pm so not sure if something got mixed up....happy to answer any questions...

jfrech

Owner
HI Spirit, Yes the Shroder LT/Grand Prix Monaco is surpassing my expectations. It was a bit of a experiment on my part, a gamble, several had reported getting great results moving from a Tri Planar to other arms like a Graham, Durand Talea, SME V-12, or the Spiral Groove Centroid.

I've always been curious on the Schroder arms...so I figured it couldn't be bad...turns out to be fantastic. I've simply never had vinyl replay like this in my system. Everything is better...Arnie (babybear) posted a great synopsis in his system thread...

The things that keep jumping out to me is

1) how the resolution/clarity is presented in a very natural non aggressive way
2) the lack of inner groove distortion
3) the bass foundation and how articulate things are down low
4) dynamics and timing...and oh my is this special...

jfrech

Owner
Spirit, I know you were excited on the battery...it's a bummer something wasn't working...I suspect it's shipping then...got dropped (or thrown or who knows)

Interesting what you say on other linear tracing arms. I am really in amazement on this arm I have. Today was listening to several small scale classical...and the clarity on the inner grooves...it's like after 35 years of running pivoted arms...I didn't know what I was missing.

Plus the arm is just better than what I am used to...It's pricey...but I guess most good things in life are...

jfrech

Owner
System edited: Installed a Shroder LT arm over the weekend. This arm is really amazing. Like a new record collection or new phono stage. I've never had dynamics or resolution like this from a LP...incredible clarity...but all the warmth and continuousness too... The thing I really notice is how the volume changes...which is really the speed of the dynamics now...I am listening 1 or 2 notches lower in volume but getting more perceived loudness. It's a pretty special arm...more comments to come

jfrech

Owner
Hmm...it was just plug and play for me. It was that easy. Really no detail to discuss. I wonder if you have a battery not charging or something jiggled loose in shipping...

I did find the center circular power on/off button a little finicky on where you touched/pushed it to power up/off other than that mine just made music...

Might be worth a call/email back to red wine...

Hi ! Nothing new lately. Got close to buying a phono stage but for various reasons had to hold off. I do have a Schroeder LT arm on order (since earlier this year). It actually might be getting ready to ship in November.

I don't think I'll go to CES. I kinda wish I would have went to RMAF (maybe next year)

How about you? I suspect your rockports and absolare pre/amp are well broken in now...

jfrech

Owner
Hi, I actually unplug it when my phono stage is powered up. I've had the phono stage on for 10 hours with no issue in power from the batteries. I do believe if you leave it plugged it....it charges/tops up at some point...but not continually and the AC is usually out of the circuit.

So, past this I really can't answer more...it just seems to work and sound nice!

jfrech

Owner
Hello,

Very nice system you have. I've read the Lyra's and your Kuzma arm are great combo's. I've heard your speakers a lot at my dealer. They are simply fantastic. I nearly purchased them instead of my Aviors. I am using Transparent Reference MM (MM2 version). One down from Opus. My dealer has Transparent Reference (MM2 version) on his Aviors.

I've also used Purist Audio Design Proteous Provectus Praesto. I do think the Purist are awesome...incredible clarity, one of the best values anywhere.

The Transparents are a little more pricey, but you gain bass control and articulation, even quieter background allowing more details, and just a organic quality to the music-even with the excellent resolution. Your Rockports are internally wired with Transparent if you didn't already know.

Hope this helps you

jfrech

Owner
I can't wait to read about your results! excited for you

I am real curious to know what you think when the rwa battery shows up! Good luck

jfrech

Owner
Meant to add..my TT motor controller takes a 9v input...via a wall wart...I want to try a batter here to soon....

jfrech

Owner
Hey Spirit, I'd think so...I first tried my phono stage with the 12v battery from my riding lawn mower....you might check with the manufacturer first...but if it's a 24v dc input...i suspect it's ok with a 24 v battery...that's a crucial point for power to be pure...

jfrech

Owner
It's a Red Wine Audio Black Lighting...about $900.

http://redwineaudio.com/components/black_lightning

My Nagra VPS phono stage has a external AC power supply...allowing 12v battery or ac=>dc 12v input to the actual phono stage.

A few pics of the Nagra (and it's separate power supply) here:

I am have a 12volt battery supply on loan for my phono stage. Really lowers the noise floor allowing more details to emerge. The surprise however is the bass seems to be more articulate and powerful....been interesting to listen to!

jfrech

Owner
Spirit...this I can understand with clarity "Hence, not a lot to do with actual physical grounding into the actual Earth itself, but the field around the components."

I'm looking forward to Arnie getting the Tripoint and Tellus in for demo...

Hi Spirit, i was just reading your comments on another forum. I to am getting very curious on this whole grounding thing. I am wondering if I need to work on my system ground first with something like this:

http://www.erico.com/products/ChemRod.asp

My home is on about 12 inches of soil (sandy and gravel) then loose limestone rock...and has a tendency to be dry here in Austin...always seems to sound a bit better when it rains and wets the soil deeply...

I do have dedicated outlets and isolated ground already...curious at thoughts here first?

I got to listen the Audio Research Ref 2SE today vs the Boulder 1008 phono stage. The system was Wilson Audio Alexia's, Dan a'gastino (sp?) amp and pre, AMG turntable and arm with a Lyra Kleos cartridge. Shunyata AC cabling/conditioner and Nordost signal/speaker cables.

The are both great phono stages. One isn't better than the other...but they two are very different from each other. The ARC Ref 2SE had big images and big presentation...very good detail and air. I just kinda melted right into it...

Then we switched to the Boulder 1008. The soundstage was just as wide and deep, however the images had more specificity with in that soundstage stage along with more detail and resolution. The surprise was the Boulder sounded a touch warmer in the mids and top end. The bass and top end was certainly more extended and resolute, the cymbals more sweet and it really conveyed the emotion and intent on the musician better. I could hear the Miles Davis' trumpet inflections more clearly...or course the boulder had a blacker background...but the ARC had next to zero noise with your ear 1 inch from the wilson tweeters..

In this system, I responded to the Boulder...I wish I could have compared it to my Nagra VPS in the same system...

Surprised me a bit, I thought the tubes in the ARC would have been the best compliment with the SS pre and amp.

Your mileage may certainly vary...

jfrech

Owner

jfrech

Owner
Hi Peter, hope all is well. I looked up Ack in the directory and couldn't find him...what am i missing? Are you still considering trying the Pass XP 15 or XP 25?

jfrech

Owner
I swapped my Lyra Atlas for my Allaert's MC2 Finish yesterday. These are both special cartridges. The Allaert's is a super low output, about .2 mv (some say lower). It is more transparent, more delicate, more powerful more effortless. And the killer is how it separates instruments and unravels the music...

The downside is it is just so damn finicky on set up and especially picky about the phono stage. Pretty sure it's exposing the noise limits on my Nagra VPS..the Lyra Atlas was a perfect match here with it's .57 mv output. I am still trying to track down a hum. With the lyra and at normal listening volume...it was silent (literally your ear up to tweeter...) now I can hear the hum/tube rush at my listening position during quiet passages.

I will try it this way for a few weeks, may try to borrow a diff phono stage, if not, then not sure if I'll stay with the Allaert's or go back to the Lyra...I value the transparency but the super low noise also...

jfrech

Owner
We discussed this...we both love our preamps and have different systems and each makes it's unique impression. Babybear recently had his amps out for a upgrade...we should have tried it then...not sure we can get to this one soon...but you never know ;-).

Also we both have special cabling...Babybear uses Echole which his preamp is also internally wired with and I use Transparent Ref MM MM2 and those networks need to be retuned when you try something new...So the cable synergies we both experience might be lost in this experiment...

That said, I am curious :) !

jfrech

Owner
Thanks for stopping by again and your help in getting things tuned up! I'll let you know about the Allaerts...

jfrech

Owner
Arnie stopped by again today. The tweaks and careful positioning are beginning pay off sonically with the Rockports. Really the best I have heard my system...after Arnie left...I just tweaked the VTF on the Lyra Atlas..it was around 1.7...I got it spot on at 1.72 per the instructions...a bit more resolution, ease and dynamics...kinda wish Arnie could have stayed a bit longer!

I was thinking about mounting my Allaert's MC Finish just to hear how it does with the Rockport's...after this last tweak on the Lyra Atlas...I'm a bit nervous with messing with a great thing...

(famous last audiophile words :)

Hi starting to get some time on the Rockport's now...had em for a lil over 3 months...however I may not have the hours of playing time others feel they need to break in...Like Albert and his new Focal's have over 650 hours and still going...maybe I need to leave em on for the next 2 weeks and see what changes might occur...

jfrech

that's great news! I can't wait to read what you think about them!

jfrech

Owner
Hi albert, you're right here, especially for the heavier items. Also the grand prix silverstone there are 2 sets of dampers, one for the shelf and one for the shelf hanger bracket. I think the shelf hanger is even more sensitive, but I don't have enough experience to declare this as fact.

Hope all is well !

jfrech

Owner
Spirit, 12k is a lot for one component...I bet it did help though. I found the Grand Prix Monaco or Silverstone stand to be a great step up...if you ever get a change to hear these stands...please consider...

jfrech

Owner
For all you Grand Prix Monaco and Silverstone owners...don't forget to change your dampers every 12-18 moths. I just replaced the hanger dampers and shelf pads under my turntable shelf...lower noise, deeper bass, better resolution. 10 minutes of work...it's not subtle...

jfrech

Hi spirit...interesting alternative I'll have to check out. I've never really explored this part of audio systems. My noise floor is extremely low...until i discover the next thing that lowers it. Interesting point you make on vinyl surface noise...

I've always found Miguel interesting and adding value to our hobby...

Happy 4th everyone !!

ps...what's the rest of your system...i can tell you've put a lot of effort into the power and I know you're a vinyl fan...

jfrech

Owner
jwm, i can't quite seem to see your whole room and I don't know if you can get treatments in...but this maybe the next step...especially helped me getting that warmth and organicness, but with out loosing resolution...

jfrech

Owner
Albert's Focals are killer good. I really need to get more time with them...before I say to much more. I can say the beryllium tweeters have similar signatures with the Rockports..incredible transparency & resolution but in a relaxed/natural way. I can also also they are one of the best speakers I've ever heard...so pretty good all in all ;-). I can also say that his system is one of the best i've ever heard...and I said that before the speaker change...his system is clearly improved now. I am trying to get back here in the next 2 weeks.

So my Rockports don't leave me wanting for any more warmth or organicness...but I also have my more time on mine.

How treated is your room? Are you using Siltech cables for interconnect and speaker? (just asking-I don't know anything about how these cables sound)

Also did you get some help on speaker setup?

jfrech

Owner
Charles so true. Plus I got a decent deal on the whole transaction which helps also...I've heard so many diff systems at so many diff price points...some of the best I heard didn't cost much....just careful set up and synergistic matching...

jfrech

JWM, I got serial #25. Some awesome reviews on The Audio Beat, Tone Audio and Mono and Stereo. Worth checking out...

How are your Rockport's settling down? Any more position adjustments?

Mine are just amazing...hope you have the same opinion!

jfrech

Owner
Lloyd, you have got to get to Texas soon ;-)

jfrech

Owner
Albert, I really want to get up there and spend more time...I know your speakers have to be settling down some...and you focal's were pretty damn good when I heard them on 2 occasions, I know it was brief...but it only takes a few notes on your system to know it's about the best there is...

jfrech

Owner
Charles, I really thought about the Absolare, i have a friend locally and I know the Absolare Passion was a significant improvement over his prior VTL pre...I had actually intended to listen to it...however once the Koda K-10 arrived for loan - I just couldn't let it go. My prior reference points were a BAT VK51SE and the Nagra I just sold...I'd also heard a BAT REX and a Nagra Jazz.

jfrech

Owner
Miquel, thanks !! I know you have some definite experience here...with the two ground lugs...one from chassis ground and one for signal ground...anything I should experiment with? I can't quite spring for a tri point at the moment?

My phono stage also has a chassis ground lug..should I try connecting these?

jfrech

Owner

jfrech

Owner
Sunnyboy, I read a lot of great things about your arm...and also how it matches with the Lyra Atlas. I am struggling a little bit on getting arm boards built for tonearms to go with my Grand Prix Monaco. It seems to be a custom process, Grand Prix has em ready to go for Tri Planar's and Grahams. Anything else is a little bit of a adventure.

I'd really like to try the SME V-12 also. I'd like to find a tonearm with a din connector, I've found that the wiring can have a substantial difference. Especially with cables like the Purist Proteus Provectus Praesto or the Transparent Reference XL MM2...

That said, I haven't tried a arm of your caliber with a dedicated cable recently...

Ideally I'd like to get 2 more arms...I do enjoy experimenting and usually find I like something about each arm...

jfrech

Owner
Hi Albert, yes I purchased the Koda K 10. I had it here on a loan for about a month and just couldn't be with out one. It's a pretty special preamp. I does have a few draw backs...no remote and only one balanced input. However on the sound of course it's a lot more quiet, more resolution, deep bass, etc etc etc...but the thing that it does is draw you in and make things so interesting. Things have timing precision and a place and ...anyway need to come listen soon!

jfrech

Owner
My Robert Koda K10 preamp has shipped. Should be here in a day or two...replacing my Nagra PLL that I've very much enjoyed for 6 years...the Nagra is really special for the money...

jfrech

Owner
I just read the entire straingauge thread. one it was a entertaining read and some definite opinions ;-) however mostly excellent info...thanks for turning me on to that...

I think my next move is a tonearm....going up to Boston next week and listening to a SME 30/12 and SME V-12. This will be the 2nd system that I'll hear with a SME V-12 arm...

The Spiral Groove Centroid is another I am very curious about...and of course the Schroeder LT (I'm on a LONG waiting list however)

jfrech

Owner
Spirit...so a question....are you a dealer or just excited based on your personal experiences? I can't quite tell if you are offering advice or trying to sell me...a sincere question...Thank you

jfrech

Hi, sorry I didn't reply. I have 2 great cartridges already, a Lyra Atlas and a Allaerts MC2 Finish. So I guess I really don't understand how this might add value to my system. I do however welcome the input. Thanks

jfrech

Owner
I've know a few with Aesthetix Io sig and one that had a Io Eclipse. I always loved listening to this phono stage.... years ago I had a Rhea for one night...I had a BAT VKP10SE at the time...The Rhea was quite the deal on detail and resolution...the BAT has more weight in the the mids. I might have to consider this soon...good idea...

jfrech

Owner
Hi Whart....The Allnic really was awesome in a few areas...makes me wonder if more tweaking or the non v version is the way to go. I did not experiment with a lot under the power supply...but that doesn't surprise me. Another friend mentioned the still points tweak to me...so now 2 recommending that...the variable eq curves are cool...but it does add at least 2 more switches per channel and from the pictures the v transformers look smaller...so hmm

jfrech

Owner
Hi, well the Allnic is a fantastic phono stage...seems resolution, wonderful musicality and spatial presentation are it's strengths. along with the great adjustability on gain, loading, RIAA curves, and the rectifier tubes change it's tonal characteristics. I found the Tung Sol the most linear, the RCA very soft, poor dynamics on top, the stock (think it's a russian ??) in the middle of those two.

It's a very interesting phone stage to listen to...it draws you in somewhat.

It's overall character, even with those strengths I value, didn't quite mesh with my system (just a bit warm...and with my Tri Planar might have been to much of a good thing for me). I bet if I still had the Wilson's I would have loved it. Also I ran it single ended...my 2 friends that have it run it balanced on the outputs. My current Nagra PLL is a touch on the warm side to...

Could also have liked different cables to..than my transparent ref xl mm 2...my cables might have again be to much on the t slight side of warm.

I still may come back to it...b/c those strengths are that good. I just feel like I need to try another before I decide. Was thinking about the Doshi next...so as anything system matching is crucial. I'll regret taking it back...I may miss it...

Rockports are seriously breaking in now...the weight and body is beautiful, the bass deepened...and the resolution/integration is up all over. I do think the speed just fantastic...very happy with my speaker swap !

Sam..thanks so much! What can you add...bring a nice lp by soon ;-)

jfrech

Enjoying...loving ;-) My wife is going to start to wonder what's going on upstairs...

The Allnic is certainly a fantastic phono stage. I can't say it's better than our Nagra VPS's just yet. I am trying some new rectifier tubes this week end. I will say the Allnic is clearly one of the best...but it's different than our Nagra's. It does have a much better set of features...the changeable eq curves, the loading via a knob ...and gain via a knob...(and 4 inputs) much nicer creature comfort than the cards Nagra uses for loading. But who knows..maybe that's why the Nagra can hang a bit in a higher weight class. The Allnic is also much higher in gain..so it had a LOT in its favor...plus a reasonable price.

Since you're a Shunyata Triton owner...the Shunyata Typhon a must do next step in my humble opinion...on the $$ per improvement scale...it's a bargain on how much it improved my system recently...

More to come on phono stages...they both sound nice...

Hi good point, the listening seat (sofa) moved several inches to the left but not further up or back. There is a second placement option with speakers closer together and more forward, this would require a position change on seating. Honestly, its so good now wasn't interested on more changes.

I will say the speakers have relaxed, opened up more and the bass and top end really just extends so wonderfully...with two weeks of constant playing time now.

I have not moved my racks, part is i dont have a real good side option and part have to run new eletricity and longer cables (which cost a bit as u know)

I'll likely have a few visitors this weekend and curious on their impressions. Also have a allnic h3000v i've been trying vs my nagra vps/vfs the past few days...

jfrech

Owner
Hi inward is what he suggested...placement wasn't so hard...took about 4-5 hours over 2 days...we still may tweak again...although it sounds pretty amazing where they are...

Knghifi thanks ! Welcome anytime...

jfrech

Owner
Thank you Albert! I see you have your grills on...my grills are running a little late, I think it dresses up a speaker some. I always like the wilson's grill off however on listening...a tad bit more transparency. We"ll see what the Rockport's and grills do...

Got some good time with the Allnic H 3000V today and yesterday. I can see why it's so highly thought of!

Jwm, those arrakis are just huge and imposing...I'd be worried about needing more floor joist support! That said I've always gone for that tonal density, all else being the same...

jfrech

Owner
Hi lloyd and mr bob, I think lloyd is right here on the metals used, pretty wilson does a lot to their tweeter to control certain characteristics....I am sure for rockport also, although in different ways.

I have not heard the new xlf's but want to one day...

jfrech

Owner
JWM...that new tweeter is killer...oh my...the transparency...but so natural in presentation

jfrech

Yeah those Aviors are pretty special ! stop by any time...mostly free this weekend... or anytime later...besides, I might want to take the turbo around the block ;-)

jfrech

Owner
Hi it's john ;-) ... I think the drivers have a little different look likely very similar to the one's you heard in newport. I don't know if they sound different...I think the smaller rockports are super value for this hobby of ours...I love those aviors

Hi Jeff, Now that I have the Altairs, I have a friend close by with the Arrakis, so in the next week or 3 I think he'll likely come over and listen to mine and me to his again. I'll post more back here. We do have similar sized rooms with good room treatments...electronics are pretty different so won't be apples and oranges. I think what I am curious about is how close the Altair's come the Arrakis...plus with 1/2 the amps & cables of the Arrikis might be some small benefits from less connections etc. Anyway...will certainly let you know !!

Congrats on your Rockports !!! Let's stay in touch as yours get shipped...let me know if I can ever help you !

jfrech

Hi Jeff, Congrat's on your Rockports also ! Maybe you mistyped above? What model are you getting? I can assure they are worth the wait !

Rockport report: I have to say, almost 6 days on now, breakin seems to be happening (more relaxed, more ease, deeper and more articulate bass). My dealer was here again today tweeking toe in on the right and moved the left out about 1.5 inches...really brought more focus and better warmth....

This is really a special speaker...wow, i'm in a different leaque now, a few days ago it was very nice, but more time from my dealer on placement and a few more hours playtime and these rockports are really singing!!

Amazing speaker !!

jfrech

Owner
Peter your table is amazing...I know after hearing the arm at Alberts, a 30/2 at a friends, and my prior 20/2...and I need to get up to visit you very soon!

System edited: Initial observations on the Rockports: A seriously a beautiful speaker to look at only bested when you close your eyes and listen vs look. My dealer spent a few hours today on dial in. He is coming back a few more times this week. We want to let them settle down some (although they have really relaxed throughout and extended some in bottom end...about 36 hours playing time now). I do think Andy put a few hours on them also at the factory (helping speed things up for me). Really the speed of a electrostat, the transparency of the best ribbons....just amazing resolution but with warmth, naturalness, and a incredible precision on timing. I do not miss the height of the Wilson's so far...I was wondering if the having the drivers elevated in a line source array vs more of a point source would be a step back...somehow the Rockports pull the illusion of height of incredibly well...I can only guess it's the differing dispersion of the Rockport drivers and how the cabinet shapes reduce defractions...The Rockports just seem to disappear as sound producers...and in width and depth.... The bottom end is awesome. Holy cow that 15 inch side firing woofer has resolution, speed and it digs down low low...integrating with everything else

Hakan, thank you. very much appreciated. I have considered moving my racks to the side or rear wall. Mostly the price of longer cables have kept me from it and I am unsure if I'll really get a better sound. Maybe some...but it's pretty killer as it is.

I am very open to suggestions here.

My treatments in my roof we're amazing. I used Rives Audio via my dealer. If you can do something like this...it's literally one of the best audio investments you can make...

Thanks for writing !

jfrech

Albert, yes lucky and fortunate to ! You always have a standing invite and I especially want to hear the Allnic phono in my system. The speaker delivery dates kept changing slightly on me...the day I was there we should have just gone with our original plan!

I do think I have to be up there over memorial day..maybe we can work something out by then...

...and I can't WAIT to hear your new setup also !!

Thesaint519: The Rockports are here. 700 lbs each !!! in the crates. But they are in my garage...no way me and a few neighbors can get then upstairs crated. I decide to spring for some piano movers and do this safely (for my back and the speakers). Anyway, they can't get here until Monday late...

jfrech

Owner
Thanks Pradeep. The Rockports arrive today !

jfrech

Owner
yes a great way to start the day with a cup a coffee...now moved to a nice Rioja and the Maxx 3's still sound great ;-) ...spinning Miles Davis quintet...the great prestige recordings...45's ... nice !!

jfrech

Owner
Yes, not in my home. But have heard them. The X2's are definitely better than my Maxx 3's in bass extension/definition, improved timing and coherence and the efficiency opens up new lower power tube amp possibilities.

I still feel the Rockport Altairs, even the 30k Aviors vs the X2/Maxx 3, posses a transparency and resolution that is what I am seeking. It's just a different "house" sound ...not a one is better or worse.

It's like Corvette is faster off the line...but a Porsche makes up for it in the corners....it's what traights you seek in music

When I get my Rockport's broken in, I'll have lot more to say here. After all I have owned 4 pairs of Wilsons....I've really enjoyed them and I have to say I am a bit nervous to switch em out. Listening to Maxx 3's right now and so very nice...

jfrech

Owner
I still have some Purist in my system (proteus provectus praesto). The wilsons seem to have a synergy with the Transparent that I liked. So it was system matching thing.

I have a friend with a all purist system and it's amazing to. Who knows...the Rockports might nudge me back to Purist. I know the 25th Anniversary is a much better cable than the PPP i used to have my system with.

The Purist for the money is to die for....the purity and resolution is startling...

Both the Rockports and the Wilsons are internally wired with Transparent also..

jfrech

Owner
I get to nyc, white plains and just north of wp's often...

jfrech

Owner
lloydelee21...your grand slamms are GREAT speakers, I've heard them. They are better than my Maxx 3's I think. Also...the driver config on the top end wilson's allow a different presentation....more a line source where most of the Rockports will be a point source ('cept for the Arrakis).

One isn't right or wrong...but they are different. You may prefer Wilson's bigger speakers over Rockports (all but the Arrakis) just off this alone.

I'll soon know ;-) which I prefer!

jfrech

Owner
Thesaint519: Where do you live? If you can get to texas..you can hear most of the Rockport speaker lineup in one town between the dealer and a few owners here...

jfrech

Owner
I am reading these one at a time :-)...so what I kept hearing in my evaluations before purchase was more transparency, more resolution, a coherency to the frequency response and just a precision to the timing. I do wonder if the Wilson's are better at dynamics and the height of the presentation. I am expecting to take a few steps ahead...and maybe a step or two back. The Wilson Maxx 3's are great speakers after all...

This is a nit...and likely doesn't matter, but I am O.C.D. on keeping contacts clean...I am going from 10 spade lugs per speaker (amp to speaker) to 4 spade lugs per speaker....(maybe the heckling begin :-)

And btw, I'll soon be posting the Maxx 3 up for sale soon here...a great deal for someone...they are in perfect like new condition. Please don't email me before, I'll gladly pay Audiogon their fee's...I use their forums daily and this is one way to help em out...

jfrech

Owner
TheSaint519: I thought they were arriving today...but maybe Monday to ship now...so end of next week. Yes, trained dealer to install and dial em in...I firmly believe in paying for expertise on speaker dial in...precision pays off !

Thanks everyone !! I have owned 4 sets of Wilson's over the years. Watt Puppy 6's, 8's, Maxx 2's and now Maxx 3's. I've had the Maxx 3's for the last 4+ years. Very very happy with all my Wilson's. And honestly I always thought I'd find a way to get to Alexandria X2's. Or I was hoping for Maxx 4's would come out...

I have a 3 friends that have Rockports (Arrakis and 2 that have Aviors). I have heard the Aviors extensively and always admired them. I went and visited the Rockport facility with my dealer last fall. I was sold, just took me a bit to get the $$'s together.

All of my Wilson's are EXCELLENT speakers. The Rockports go a different direction. I'll know in a few weeks the real differences when they are in my room, set up properly and have some time to breakin.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. The Wilson dynamics and the driver configuration (giving you the height and how the Maxx's load the room) are things I know I might be taking a step backwards on...

Rockport Altairs, in a custom Porsche Topaz Brown Metallic finish. I'll be posting my Wilson Maxx 3's for sale soon. Great price on a KILLER good speaker !! Do you want em ;-)

I really struggled what speaker to move Wilson X2's were VERY high on my list...the XLF's were just to much $$'s.

jfrech

Owner
Denon1, I still LOVE the Purist Cables. I have some in my system still (Proteus Provectus Praesto).

I am also using Transparent Reference XL (Phono cables) and Transparent Reference MM (pre to amp, amp to speaker). Both are the MM2 versions.

I do like the Transparent cables...especially with my Wilson's. Those tuned networks really do lower the noise and up the resolution.

Can't beat Purist though on a value per $$....

And all this is this is system dependent...so you're mileage may vary...

PS, thanks for the compliments !

jfrech

Owner
Thank you ! I remember...I did really love my BAT phono stages, had 3 or 4 if I remember...VKP5, P10, P10SE and the P10 superpak...

I think I'll be able to demo the Allnic H3000 or H3000v at home some. I could have had it now...but I have new speakers getting delivered in a few days...so didn't want to many changes at once.

I have thought about the Dart and Shindo..the issue is I really want to listen before I buy...hi end is getting so hard to do this the last few years....Have you tried or heard the Dart or Shindo?

I am VERY impressed with the Koda K10. And the help from the manufacturer gave my dealer...I love companies like this and makes you want to do business with em !

jfrech

Owner
Hi, the K10 preamp goes further...sorry I could have been a little more clear...I meant to say the Shunyata Typhon is like a electronics change...it's a big deal, just maybe not as much as the K10.

I've now switched over to digital...the above comments were only on vinyl. Seems the Shunyata Typhon improves my digital a bit more-which I suspect digital is more dirty AC wise...so maybe more to clean up.

I am sure I have more break in also...maybe a week/weeks more...

But you are right...considering the money involved...I have not tried the K10 yet with the Shunyata Typhon...

jfrech

Owner
Demo'ing a Shunyata Typhon this weekend. Here's a starter report. Only thing changed in my system is a Shunyata Typhon and Anaconda zitron connecting umbilical. (a few of you know I was also trying a Robert Koda Tukami K10 Preamp last weekend, my dealer has it this weekend...I wanted to try the Typhon with no other system changes - which btw this is a killer good preamp... a must listen if you can)

Also know the Anaconda zitron connecting umbilical has nearly zero hours on it with any kind of current flowing. I suspect it has a VERY long break in and I also suspect the Typhon doesn't move enough current to break it in.

The Typhon/Anaconda zitron has been plugged into the Triton since last Monday evening, I had a biz trip and just started listening a few hours ago (Sat afternoon)...so nearly 5 days to settle in...

It definitely drops the noise. Things seem more focused and soundstage is bigger. The timing seems different. Almost like clock vs no clock on the dCS. On the Nagra VPS (phono) there was always a little hum and hiss that only a battery supply got rid off. Well, this got rid of that and more. At normal volume, on the phono input...un muted...you barely hear anything 1 inch away...

Something is a little different in the bass..at first I thought it was out of phase...but seems like a LOT more resolution. Maybe a break in thing still...the instruments seem to be in their on space a bit more and you can really hear back of hall echo's MUCH more pronounced...but very natural (ie NOT artificially hyped something)

The tonal balance didn't change...just the resolution and timing. And it's NOT subtle.

I mentioned I swapped preamps last weekend...well this is that same order of magnitude-like a electronics change.

One more thing...my Wilson Maxx 3's always disappeared great...but now you can look at the speaker and have even a harder time knowing the sound is coming from one of those 5 drivers...

jfrech

Owner
Himiquel, where can I get your #? Can likely call friday or sat...thanks

Want to talk about your k10 journey and maybe the troy...

jfrech

Owner
Himiquel,

thanks for replying. any comments on or offline on the k10? how long have you owned it? how well does it synch up with digital and vinyl? to Albert's question, any issues on the lower gain?

how does it respond to your power conditioners? or Grounding? The reviewers said power doesn't effect it much...but I don't necessarily believe that..everything that I've ever owned is impacted by better power delivery. Guess their could be a first for anything.

Thanks in advance !

jfrech

Owner
Hi Albert...pretty sure that is true. I have to turn up the volume to about 1 o'clock on digital and about 2-3 o'clock on vinyl.

I will say the sound is just wonderful. This by far the most expensive preamp I've ever tried...however, sounds like I have new speakers. Really incredibly engaging, the timing and flow of the music. How resolute, but with warmth and sweetness and power.

My dCS Scarlatti really synchs up well. I am wondering if my phono stage is holding it back a little bit...I think that's a key upgrade point for me very soon...

I'll post more as I get more time with it....

jfrech

Owner
I have a Robert Koda K10 preamp in my home for evaluation.

The build quality is amazing, as it should be for the price.

I've only had it installed and powered up for about 18 hours. But compared to my Nagra PLL...the blackness...the resolution, the dynamic swings, the musical timing, focus, the back of stage, a sense of movement of the musicians...just everything delivered in equal parts...nothing spotlit. Every note delivered with power...but easy and natural at the same time. Unforced detail but with power & dynamics.

My Ayre MXR's really synch up well...the whole system is elevated...both digital and vinyl...

The preamp got a few great reviews The Audio Beat and Tone Audio which prompted me to try it...

I'll post more as I get some serious time with it....but it's clearly a special preamp...

jfrech

Owner
Rumors ?!? ;-) All I can say the speaker color will soon be Porsche Topaz Brown Metallic vs my current Desert Silver... hmm :)

Also trying a few new preamps...Ayre KXR, Koda K10, and a Allnic H3000 phono soon...maybe also try ARC Ref 5SE and Ref 2SE

FInally a Shunyata Typhon will be demo'd also with my Triton

jfrech

Owner
Why thank you ;-) The room treatments were a major improvement...if I ever have to move...not sure I can ever have a music room with out that...and kicked my myself for waiting so long to do it in the first place!

I just ready your post about your pre amp another on your cables. I just had my Transparent Ref XL MM2 phono cables retuned (got a new cartridge and a new SUT). I put this off for months...all sounded good and didn't want to fool with it...wow...was I wrong. What ever they do on the tuning...it's a big deal...

jfrech

Owner
If you're ever in texas, let me know...yes had maxx 2's a few years ago. Thanks for the compliment !!

jfrech

Owner
Hi, I felt like I was getting some reflections from the vaulted sides (at first reflection points. But the large diffusor I now have also really opens up the stage and everything more coherent...I can't say enough about a properly done room...

If you are happy with your home...don't sell it over the vaulted ceilings...doesn't cost much to treat those very effectively...

jfrech

Owner
Hi Thanks ;-) ! Vinyl is still my passion..and still is better...however the dCS Scarlatti is very close in a lot of respects. Especially it's ability to convey emotion and timing of the music. For classical...especially chamber music...I really prefer the dCS and the availability of great recordings on SACD. For Jazz...vinyl...

jfrech

Owner
Samhar: swing by soon ;-) !! and let me know what you think !

jfrech

Owner
Zephyr: yes...Rives plans were about 2700 (I had a complicated room that drove this up some) and everything else wasn't a whole lot more...I was serious that the total cost was a few (good) power cords...

jfrech

Owner
I'd contact Rive's Audio. I am sure they, or one of their dealers, can walk you through what to do possibly in your room. I can assure you, after all the time, money and fun on my design, it was one of the best investments you can make as a audiophile. And didn't really cost me more than a few of our power cords...

It makes a massive difference. I could send you my drawings...but they are so room specific, not sure you can get much from it at all...

jfrech

Owner
Hi and THANK you ! I've heard your Esoteric Digital Stack before, I know that equipment is awesome. Impressed with your cables...that always made a big diff in my systems. Have you considered a few room treatments in your room yet? like maybe a few bass traps and some treatment at the first reflection points? All the best !!

jfrech

Owner
Arnie, thanks for stopping by. Really enjoyed the conversation. Let me know if you pick up that Riverside LP box set of Bill Evans. I really enjoy it...

jfrech

Owner
I saw it. IT'S BEAUTIFUL. The finish is out of this world. Albert said furniture quality..I don't have any furniture that nice! Really special.

We ab'd those 2 cartridges a lot. I have a Atlas...and I've heard his supreme a few times over the years. First, neither is wrong. Present slightly different perspectives. It's almost on vocals/classical I like the supreme a lil better, on jazz the Atlas better. But this is over simplifying it....it's really down to you like the piano on the Supreme but the strings on the Atlas. Then the next recording it might flip the other way around.

The Atlas seems to be a touch more dynamic, a touch more resolution..the Supreme a lil more weight on the back end of a piano note or the cello. Both are great and handling siblance...rendering voices and soundstage.

As I told Albert when I left, you'd really have to hear the Piano in the recording venue to know which one "more" right.

I think for you, what's better is what matches to your system more. The Atlas is higher output...so easier on the phono stage "possibly" If you want a slight nudge in resolution or dynamics, go for the Lyra. If you want a touch of warmth...go for the Air Tight.

Honestly, they are close, they are both good. That Turntable is fantasic...

Hope this helps !!

jfrech

Owner
Hi Ed, Happy New Year, not yet o the XLF's or Q7's, I do want to go hear some other speakers, I think Avalon also has a new speaker coming out soon. I am mostly really hoping Wilson has a Maxx 3.5 or 4..that's upgradable like the Maxx 1 to 2's were. Maybe this is wishful thinking ;-)

I am very envious on your vinyl front end...I am going to Albert's tomorrow and will hear his mk 3 again...

The Zitrons really settle down after a very long break in...they are really amongst the best. Power cords are so hard...these seem to really hit the clarity/warmth/resolution/extremes just right...at least for me in my system..

Any changes or thoughts on your set up? Really looks great to !

jfrech

Owner

jfrech

Owner
Hi, no didn't read me wrong...the Atlas does seem to unravel stuff better...which to me I hear resolution from this.

What arms do you have ? I think this must be my next move...I am guessing a Reed, SME v-12 or a Graham...The Schroder linear tracker is VERY interesting I must say...

jfrech

Owner
Hi Gail, good to hear from you. Hope all is going well. I have not tried the upsampler yet. I have long suspected the firewire cable isn't optimal, I wonder if this route sounds better because you can use the AES/EBU balance digital outs or the differences in decoding or some of both.

jfrech

Owner
I have about 30-40 hours on the Atlas now. I also think I have it dialed in pretty spot on. Still going back and forth some between the Nagra MC stage (with the Nagra Transformers) or using the Nagra via MM card and EAR MC 4 SUT.

Nagra direct is a touch more pure/transparent. Via EAR MC 4 more weight on each note. I like em both to be honest...almost which recording dictates.

All this said (I had the same tests with the Nagra on the Allaerts). The Lyra is definitely has more resolution, unravels music better, and that speed and dynamics is startling at times. It's really big step up from my former Skala.

The Allaerts seems very even handed (nothing added/subtracted up and down the frequency range), seems a touch better at imaging depth and width, and more warmth presence..especially on vocals.

Which is more accurate is hard to say. They are both very good and I'm lucky to have em...

These are hard choices aren't they !

jfrech

Owner
HI it's pretty clear the transport wins. My dealer also has the scarlatti upsampler so this is giving the USB/MAC/Amarra the best shot. Now hi rez digital does sound very good, ditto redbook via usb...but it's just not as good as off the transport...

Thanks for the compliments..system is really sound nice ;-)

Hi, room is really sounding great. Just waiting on a few more RPG bad panels and absorbers to finish it up. I can say it's like a new system....the bass is by far the best i've ever had...

I think the Sasha vs maxx 2 is pretty easy..the sasha should win in all areas except maybe how the woofers connect with the room and maybe, maybe dynamics, and possibly height of the presentation. The Sasha's may even be slightly more transparent than my Maxx 3s. Given this choice...I'd have to say Sasha's...

In this price range I think the Rockport Aviors are also a must consider...

jfrech

Owner
Hi lenny, it's about 90% done now. Only items left are 4 rpg bad panels (going on sloped cieling) and several rpg absorbers in the rear of the room. It's a dramatic change, both in looks (came out much better than I had hoped) and of course in sound. The dormers/rear stair case have 72 x 48 inch high rpg variscreens in them. They are about 4 inches thick with a bad panel on one side/absorbtion on the other. Really killed/tamed those areas...

I suppose u r going to the grand prix? I guess I need to figure out tickets, I don't want to miss it...hope all is well with u!

jfrech

Owner
Hi Gayle, you'll have to stop by soon. Really some big changes. Casey and I moved the speaker out about 3 feet and wider apart Sunday. Every 1 cm move was audible...took us about 6 hours to lock it in perfectly. Very nice, much more articulate everywhere. Bass is the best I've EVER had now.

The clock cables seem to allow the clock to do it's job better. I first started hearing stuff when I swapped ac cords my clock. Better focus, better detail retrieval, things portrayed in space better. Same happens on better clock bnc cables. I've used Cardas and Purist. Cardas is a steal at around $250. Purist does seem a bit better at 3-4x the price though.

Hope all is well on your end!

How does it sound? I bet it's great! I know the hassle of getting stuff fixed isn't fun....

So is this noise like a pop? Right when the preamp mutes at zero? Ditto the input switching? If so my VK51SE did that to...pretty sure it has something to do with the caps...but doesn't effect sound and really isn't something to fix.

working as designed i think was the word i heard...

My Nagra PLL pops on power on...some stuff just does this...In nagra's case...they got to use one less relay to mute the output...claiming a purer signal path...

Hi Pradeep, thanks! I can't wait to get the room finished...still considering tonearms... the Reed 3p is pretty much at the top of the list...

I'm using Transparent Reference XL with MM2. (off my tonearm, off the SUT and off the phono stage to pre) Pretty impressed with the way they tune the cables to match everything. Lowest noise floor cable I've had yet. I do have Purist Proteus Provectus Praesto...that cable is very good...system matching or better said system preference really dictates which...

I have not tried the Shunyata interconnects...I have heard from a friend he had RFI issues...but I don't know if it was him, his system or the cables. I am so happy with Transparent, I really don't have a desire to look right now...

Now Shunyata's power cords are different ! I think my views on the Anaconda zitron are changing. I used to think the King Cobra CX had it beat in warmth/maybe bass...but the Anaconda Zitron beat it handily everywhere else. Seems after extended breakin on the Anaconda Zitron, it definitely beats the KC CX in the bass (especially in deep deep bass)..and the equal in warmth. I am going to try to move to all Anaconda Zitrons soon...

Hey Lenny! I heard about the clock, I really noticed it, especially on sacds. Did u try a cardas clock cable also? If not, I have a extra u can try....

I should have my room done in about 3 weeks. It's gotten a lot better, similar to what you're room and your rives correction u have (I still remember that demo-wow)

Also, I'd love to give the turbo a spin...my gts is really nice-best car I've ever had...(Have some nice curvy roads) close to me)

I'll reach out when my room is done...

Hi forgot to say on the bass traps, 20mil pond liner is stretched just behind the black Guilliford of Maine fabric. The liner acts as a membrane that begins the trapping process into the fiber...

Hi Kevin (assume that's u),

1). They are solid pine, but at critical angles and certain board lengths and widths. I also have them at the first reflection points. So it is really a sawtooth pattern. Also they are filled with owns corning r13 and help with bass trapping...They are about a inch thick and heavily braced inside like a speaker cabinet. Plus bolted onto the stud...

2) on the new bass traps, they are simply much larger and more effective. Like 4 x the volume and likely trapping ability. Also tuned to hit the right frequency my room needs. Inside the trap is another type of owners corning fiber - only one hvac shop in Austin stocked it. The diffusers went in 3 weeks ago, the bass traps yesterday. So I got to hear what each did...

3) the beams are also pine, about 9 feet up, supporting the roof trusses. Next I'll add diffusors in-between the 5 beams, wood on one side, and the same bass trap Owens fiber/Guilliford of Maine fabric on back. Again at specific angles creating a sawtooth across my ceiling. The beams are about 5 inches wide x 8 inches tall. Very solid....

Hope this helps...I could email the plans if u want .PDF file...it's room specific....

You have a nice system also....how did u arrive at your room treatment strategy?

I also think Wilson might come out with a maxx 3.5 or 4 etc..above their new Alexia...I really want to hear the new Wilsons (either xlf or Alexia) to see what this new tweeter offers...I am like the Absolute Reviewer, Wilson's current tweeter is pretty damn nice...

hi madflloyd....I've heard the magico's a few times at babybears house (before his Rockports) They are certainly good speakers-no question about that. But I am pretty happy with my Wilson Maxx 3's and always assumed I'd snag a pair of X2's used some day. From my Magico experiences...they did bring a different set a attributes than Wilson, but more 6 of this...1/2 dozen of that. The Rockport Altair's and I must admit the Rockport Avior's bring a better set a attributes that I value.

They are all great speakers...but the Rockport's seem to have this ability to emotionally connect you. I had one of long term reference dics with me...it's just a piano and a cello...with the rockports...for the first time ever, I could hear the celloist leading the pianist in timing. Almost like a dancer with one leading and one following. It was a startling discovery on a disc I knew so very well. Then the next disc..you could tell the musicians where playing together. I am sure this is hard to comprehend from my words...those Rockport Altairs just opening a window on the musicians intent (a friend who was with me...used this phrase...I think it fits...)

As far as your demo...that seems odd to be rolled off..spectral isn't...and the 4 sets of rockports I've heard, all differing rooms and systems..never struck me that way...

With all this said...I am still unsure If I'll switch from Wilson...but I must admit, it's really got me thinking !

Hi the Rockort Altairs (vs Maxx 3 or X2 Alexandria-not xlf...haven't heard those...but I do own maxx 3's and have intimately listened to the x2's at my dealers)...in every case, I feel like the Rockport's communicate the emotion/timing of the music in much more transparent way than my Wilsons...they are a very special speaker....I am seriously wondering about a switch.

I do want to hear if XLF's/Alexia's to see if Wilson's new tweeter brings this element to the table...

After a year of planning, my Rives room project has begun installation. The diffusers went in on Sat. Really beautiful wood. RPG Bad Arc, RPG Absorbers on order (20 of em). RPG Variscreens are already here in the 3 dormers.

Bass Traps go in over memorial day weekend. Custom building these into the corners. I'll be taking out 2 ASC Tower Traps and 4 ASC Soundpanels (that I've had for 10 years+) The ASC stuff definitely helps...but the Rives seems to be on a whole new level...

Hi broken, i agree here with lloydee...hopefully just a fuse. I also would not conect/disconnect speaker cables with amp on (even at the speaker end). Radioshack should have a fuse of the same value.

I hum could be dozens of things...bad solder joint in amp/pre/cable, something in shipping, bad tube, loose tube (i'd check this-but with pre Fully !!! Off as no lights on like in standby)

Let us know...good luck

lloydlee21, which wilsons are you running again? I'm going up to Rockport in few weeks. I love my Wilson, but thought I'd check out what else is out there. This is my 4th set of Wilson's over the years (wp 6's, 8's maxx 2's, maxx 3's)

I'm in the midst of a Rives room project...the side diffusors are getting built this week...might have the bass traps done in about 2 weeks, then the ceiling diffusors...kinda excited to hear what a real room does...I"ve always had a few treatments, but not a complete plan like this..

Hi Sanji, ! Thanks, I just checked out your system to! About the only tweek I think you can do to our Grand Prix tables is trying Apex feet vs the stock feet...was a nice improvement for me...not to much $$'s.

I'd email bat here...you could have a upgraded vk30 or maybe they never changed the display...the upgraded will sound the same...I doubt there is a issue here.

(also be sure to run it in standby vs fully turning off (unless going on vacation of something)-it'll sound better. Over the 7 years I had my bat vk50se/51se, it was rarely fully off...(like maybe a few weeks total over 7 years)

Broken, I'm with lloydelee21 here. good luck and let us know how it sounds! My son is now 17, he is really into music... got him a set of grado headphones awhile back and this summer a Schitt tube headphone amp (he just had to have tubes!) smart kid ;-)

jfrech

Owner
Broken, ok i see, understand on the heat (I live in texas) and if you have small kids it is a worry. Any chance you can move up to a 51se from a 31se? big diff in the preamps (I owned the 51se and heard the 31se in my set up) The 51se has much more weight and dynamics, along with being quieter, you won't miss your tube amp so much! You won't miss to much in the mids...you'll be gaining a bit in bass control and top end extension and maybe some dynamics...so it's really 6 of one 1/2 dozen the other on the amps...Also a 32SE is a good route (newer than the 51SE, although I haven't heard this...just read some posts...

jfrech

Owner
My dealer in austin has said a few great things on Gryphon, sounds like maybe it's time I seek out a audition...

jfrech

Owner
Broken, sorry missed your 2nd post. I think adding a BAT preamp should give you another 6db of gain plus control your amp better possibly than your Audible Illusions (which i've read is a good preamp).

I think the preamp is your next move from my experience. Then if you still feel you need a little more power...try something down the road. A BAT 51SE with your 75SE is a awesome combination. Hard to beat for any amount of money...I had to spend a bundle to get better (really more different)

Good Luck, you have my 2cents now :)

jfrech

Owner
Broken,

My former BAT VK51SE worked great with the Ayres. Also my current Nagra PLL is a nice match. (I also tried the matching Ayre preamp). Beyond this, I don't have any experience.

A all bat system is a very good thing. I do think their pieces complement each other more than anything else. Plus a BAT VK51SE used is a just a steal for the money. It was a weight and wetness in the mid range that just can't get beat (except maybe by the BAT REX) (sorry I did have this at home also for a try)

Honestly, I'd for a preamp NOW over your power amp. Get the BAT PRE.. now...

jfrech

Owner
Lloydlee, Class A solid state amps do have some great qualities. Pretty sure the BAT VK200 I used to have was class A (given the heat output). I've also had a Luxman class A amp at home (that was a nice amp). Seem that these have all share some tube like qualities around a more relaxed top end, more warmth etc. They don't have the ultimate power or control as some other solid state bruisers...but then again isn't it sound quality we're after?

jfrech

Owner
Hi, years ago I had a BAT VK200. I have to say the BAT VK60 I bought next was a far superior amp in the midrange. Not saying the BAT SS amps aren't good, I am saying their tube amps are excellent. You might not like this step, you might get the power your after, but loose the midrange magic you likely also love...

From my experience, the Ayre MXR's are very hard to beat. Incredibly transparent, excellent bass control/extension..sweet soft highs...it's like a tube amp that's solid state. Oh it's best strength is it's always effortless into any load, any kind of music.

I was really worried about leaving tube amps...I've had my Ayre MXR's now for 3 years...really nice amp. Hope this helps you!!

jfrech

Owner
Acutally I had to move the Ayre MX R's off the bottom shelf (got to hot and shut down) and put the Triton on the lowest shelf on the Grand Prix SilverStone F1. The Amps are now on a Grand Prix Monoco amp stand....no footers anywhere except under the racks (a nice thing about Grand Prix)

I might try the damping plates on top...interesting idea...

How is that Triton/Anaconda zitron breaking in for you?

jfrech

Owner
Hi Pradeep ! That's awesome and congratulations. I found the Triton awesome day one...but it will get better. The transparency and see through sound stage (more here) along with the decays/detail/delicacy (lil less here).

The Anaconda seems to take longer...maybe 2 months...but my front end equipment doesn't take a lot of power...

I have my Triton on the bottom shelf of my Grand Prix Audio Silverstone rack...so pretty significant isolation. I haven't tried it others places yet to see what diff are.

System edited: Swapped out Shunyata Anaconda CX for Anaconda Zitrons. 1 for Triton, 2 for amps, and 1 for phono stage. Tremendous gains in clarity and resolution. along with depth. The King Cobras have a warmer/wetter presentation, it's still a killer cord...so keep these on my digital and preamp

Hi Gail, good to hear from you. I hope all is going ok! I didn't experiment really at all (yet). I had tried a Cardas Lighning 15 when I had the Puccini and U-Clock, it made such a difference, that at approx $300, I just ordered new ones at the right length for my Scarlatti dac and transport.

It's quite remarkable what this cable does for a clock. I do think I'll experiment, maybe this fall, try a Purist or Transparent. It's a little tough because most digital cables have rca terminations and I need BNC in this application.

I also swapped firewire cables, from the stock to AudioQuest Diamond, it's a improvement also. (the connectors are fussy on the AQ...I don't really like the loose connection it seems to make)

I keep hoping someone will let me know if they've done some trials...Let me know if you have or have friend who has been down the path. Right now, I'm thrilled with the performance of the cardas, especially for the cost...

jfrech

Started looking at SUT for more gain (Allaerts is a bit less than .2mv). The EAR MC4 certainly solves the gain...but the dynamics, life and music just presents itself with vibrancy I didn't seem to have before. It with .5mv cartridges... If you have Nagra VPS, might be worth checking out a external SUT. I did buy the Nagra MM card (kept the MC card also for a 2nd Lyra I plan to buy soon) I am using the 40ohm tap on the EAR MC 4

?? The wheels might be from a set up pic...they've been spiked for years...Silverstone is significantly better than the monaco (and it is pretty good). I want to buy a silverstone amp stand one day...

Hi Pradeep, I bet that Atlas is wonderful. I really need to check it out soon. I keep doing smaller things (cables and such) with such a big improvement, it's pushing my desire for a Atlas a bit out.

The Triton is a SIGNIFICANT change. I delayed getting one for about a year. Cold, unbroken in, I preferred it to my Vray II (in every way) It hits a few areas in order of significance:

1) looses any hint of aggressiveness on the leading edges of notes. Especially on cymbals, violins, piano etc. Now I would never describe the vrays as aggressive, but you'll know what I mean with the triton

2) More clarity and transparency. You can hear into and through the soundstage is new and difference ways. Feels like your closer to the musicians

3) Less noise. I tend to listen louder now, but seems quieter. (volume control up a few notches) which allows more dynamics and better

4)Bass, better textures, more nimble lives and breathes better if you will

Break in seems to be 24 hours goes a long way...then the next increment hits in about 6-7 days, then finishes after a month. I have about 2.5 months on mine now.

Honestly, If you like your ray, this is a must buy. I was using all King Cobra CX's or Anaconda CX's for the comments above. Just yesterday, my dealer brought 4 Anaconda zitrons by (1 20 am, 3 15 amp). Will post more soon....

Hope you are doing great

forgot to add, I like the Shunyata Triton so much, I don't think the Red Wine Audio Black Lightning Battery is needed. I will say, the Red Wine Battery is killer good for the price...so if you have Nagra and not the in best power cords/conditioning, it absolutely is the way to go...

Incredible detail, dynamics, very focuses center image and loads of depth, dimension and ability to pick out instruments on the stage. My issue here is buy the time i buy it, cables, and the mm card, I wonder If I should just get a new phono stage, maybe the Lamm LP2 (high gain), the Tron Seven Ultimate, or maybe the Allnic...hard to say with out listening...any comments?

rtilden: I think tubes are necessary somewhere. I've historically been all tubes...a few years ago went with tube phono/pre solid state amps. I wish I was more familiar with your coda electronics to give a better answer.

So my thoughts are yes, but also better solid state is better to. You might just have to try a few. I know some good brands are Nagra, VAC, Audio Research, VTL and plenty of others. It's funny a lot of the tube brands (ARC and VTL) for instance are going hybrid in some cases...My Nagra does this in the phono stage. Transformer coupling is another route...some brands here are Allnic and again my Nagra.

Where do you live? I wonder if we can hook you up with some other Audiogon members to listen? Or dealers? I am not sure your price range or new/used...

Hope this helps !

Hi, thank you for your compliment ! You have a great vinyl outfit also, I am sure that Purist cable is just amazing!

I just took the plunge a few weeks ago on the dCS Scarlatti. It is quite a amazing piece of gear. Incredible resolution, but presented so naturally. On some recordings, it is the best u r there experience I've had. I usually listen to Jazz and small scale classical (chamber, quartets etc). And mostly to SACD. In fact, I've yet to put a redbook cd into the Scarlatti. The best thing I like about the dCS Scarlatti is the convenience. It's always ready to go, 100% warmed up, just pop in disc and hit play. it's approaching my vinyl set up in listenablity. Beats it in bass definition/power and maybe texture. Also beats my vinyl set up in resolution and depth of the image. And of course a lower noise floor. Piano on the dCS Scarlatti is amazing-just the ability to portray the notes in space with power and decay trails. My vinyl still portrays the images more 3d, seems a bit more fluid, more continuous. My Vinyl rig does seem to go deeper in the bass, albeit less power. Cymbals/brushes stuff in the tweeter covers...seems about a tie...which is right where I think most digitals falls down. This is the best trait of the dCS system.

I am sorry, 5k on digital won't really close the gap on your vinyl (just my opinion), the dCS Puccini and U-Clock is pretty good...but about 23.5k I think list price. You'd really have to go up to this to seriously enjoy it for listening seriously. For less serious listening, that's different...some of the Esoteric's are very nice. Also hi rez via pc/mac is coming on, I expect the technology to advance here quite a bit. 24/192 is pretty good, ditto 24/96. If you're into computers a dCS dac (Paganini) with the dCS U Clock will get you a very long way to my Scarlatti...for a lot less cash..

So choices here and money is what it comes down to on digital. I would not buy digital seeking better sound than your vinyl, if you want convenience and access to different music, along with nearly as good as vinyl sound, you'll be pleasantly surprised by a quality digital investment! It won't really beat good vinyl like we both have, it may in a few areas like I am experiencing...

Hope this helps !

Hi Thanks !! On the dCS Scarlatti I am using DSD filter 3 mostly. I've played with dsd filter 2 some. The filters seem to have a larger effect than with the dCS Puccini/UClock combo. Also I am using dither on the dCS Scarlatti Clock and I really didn't like it some much on the U Clock. Anyway there is just more info getting presented vis the Scarlatti system...

On the dCS Puccini, I was using DSD filter 1, but I am wondering now if that was a mistake and maybe I should have tried filter 3 more...

On the Red Wine Audio Black Lightning, I have Casey's demo at my house...our Lemo's are still backordered...driving me (us now) nuts! I ordered a double unit so I can power my Nagra PLL and VPS via the same box...

jfrech

Owner
Seems like Audiogon has the system page messed up. I can't figure out how to update my system...

Anyway I traded my dCS Puccini and U-Clock for a dCS Scarlatti Transport, Scarlatti Clock, and Scarlatti DAC. It's simply a stunning digital front end. Easy and natural to listen to, incredible imaging and placement of those images in the soundstage. It's up there with my vinyl. Seems like the recording dictates what is really better....vinyl and digital both have strengths and weaknesses at this level...not sure I can say one is better than the other...

Also, added a Red Wine Audio Black Lightning battery power supply to my Nagra PLL. I have a double unit on order to power both my Nagra PLL and VPS. Adds another dose of naturalness and ease to the presentation. I get about 7-8 hours off the battery...before it auto charges...

dgad, I remember your system used to be posted. What arm and table are you running your Lyra on? I loved by Skala, just never tried a Titan i, although most of the Titan i owners feel like you do....

My wife might even go for this visit :-)

Owner
Hi Dgad,

I am loving the MC2 Finish. I need to try some step ups or something like the Pass. I also have the Tron 7 phono on my short list. Allnic also. Just need money...

Sorry if I mistyped something, The Allaerts does have more detail...and warmth at the same time, I agree with you. The imaging is awesome with the Allaerts. I never tried a Titan i, but I think Lyra is about to come out with a model above it, which I'll really want to try out. It might preclude me from checking out phono stages if the output is above .3mv or so...

The Nagra VPS, even at 60db is so well behaved, it's quite a combo with the Allaerts, but I suspect I can get more dynamics/lower noise with a SUT or a different phono. I just wonder if I'll loose some of the Nagra magic I seem to love...

Restock, I am surprised to on the vps. My dealer brought the cartridge by and I got about 10 hours listening before I purchased. I'd like to try some other step ups like a external trannie or I am checking with nagra if I van get them to make special transformers with about 5db more gain.

If they can't, it's pretty special still as is. I only have about 20 hours on the allaerts mc2 finish, I suspect it will ease and extend as it breaks in. World class cartridge fresh out the box though. Wow the transparency and resolution. Ditto being able to hear the back of the stage and beautiful strong bottom end.

I'll post more as I get more hours with it.

Thanks for posting

It sounds great! The Allaerts at .2mv output is likely at the bottom of what the VPS can effectively do. I had Nagra make a 845ohm card for the loading which was a nice improvement. I am using the solid state gain option in the Nagra so transformers, tube, and SS. (This is the same as I did with my Lyra Skala btw at .5mv-I did run it some without the solid state-little more transparency with the tubes, lost a little bass extension)

I would not try a .15 or .17 output with the VPS based on my experience with the .2 MC2 Finish.

My volume control on the preamp is right about noon position...

Both are fantastic cartridges. Like I said above, if Lyra has a model above the Titan i one day, I'll surely try that to...

C1Ferrari, thanks for the compliment! I used to have a all BAT system, vk51se, P10SE superpak, VK150SE's. It was just to much heat in Texas. However those mids are to die for!

Lloyddelee21,

Hi, I used to have those Trans Ref XL (pre mm and mm2's) The Purist Dominus and Proteus Provectus handily beat in most all parameters. The newer MM2 are dramatic improvements over their older cables. The MM2 vs older Tran are much more organic and involving, even more quiet, deep bass, more clarity and extended highs.

I would not change your power cords. I am considering some of the Purist Limited Edition cords for my amps.

Transparent does have a special synergy with Wilson's. Other cables are great to. Transparent has a great trade up program, if you can take advantage of it. You may even find with the MM2 versions you can step down (so Ref xl to regular reference or ultra and still get performance gains)

Hope this helps

jfrech

Owner
Glai: I wouldn't classify as gains. I would say different and better system matching.

The transparent helped tighten/extend the bass, also more quiet. Imaging was wider and rounder.

The purist had strengths to, clarity and emotional involvement.

These are degrees of goodness...both are great!

Hi, I'll get some more photo's up-might be 2 weeks or so. Thanks for the compliment!

Peter, I did not compare against HRS. Frankly the difference from my Finite Elemente Master Pagode (itself a very good rack) was so startling it didn't matter. I did get to hear the Grand Prix Silverstone vs the Grand Prix Monaco Rack at my dealer. Then I brought home just a Grand Prix Monaco amp stand for a small comparison. The sliverstone is a fantastic improvement over the monaco. And Just the monaco amp stand (so moving my ayre mx-r's from finite to monaco amp stand) produced a nice improvement. So given what I heard at my dealer plus this small example at home was all the convincing i needed.

Secondarily, I felt like my Grand Prix Monaco Turntable would be optimal on one of the grand prix stands.

So, this stand is like getting a new system. It's startling...

System edited: Added Grand Prix Audio Silverstone F1 component stand. This is a monster improvement. It's really hard to believe how a stand can have such a dramatic effect on sound quality. Everything is truly better. Much more detail but keeping all the warmth. Especially cleaned up the bass, I thought I was having room node issues. Also brought out dynamics. Honestly, this is like changing out all of your electronics. I have 2 pics posted (one in my system photo's) Will add a few more over time...

I have considered it. But really for a better Lyra. I've wondered about the Titan i or hoping Lyra might refresh the top end Titan i along the lines that they just did for the Helicon...

Other choices could be a Allaerts, Koetsu Coralstone, or Airtight Supreme. I might have to change arms with some of these. Plus, I've ran lyra's so long now (Lydian B 4 years, Helicon 4 years, Skala 4+ years) I'm a little afraid I won't like anything else.

Congrats on your phono stage. I bet that sounds fantastic. Are you using the newer Benz MR or the former? I've read outstanding things about both...

Hi, you have a nice system to! Also, I love the purist cabling. I stray from time to time but keep coming back. I haven't tried the Canorus just yet.

The Shunyata helix cx cables with the Vray II is a very hard combo to beat. It's a pricey, but yields fantastic results, especially on front end equipment like digital and pre amps. I like my amps straight to the wall. What cord goes to your V ray II? A Purist limited? I'd try a King Cobra Helix cx here first, then Anaconda's Helix CXs (or pythons depneding on your budget) to you front end. The Shunyata seems to work best as a complete system.

Do not sell your Purist AC Cords, these are very good especially the Limited Ed. I'd use these for your amps, and other equipment, but on a separate circuit if you can from the Shunyata.

You should also try the Purist Limited without the Shunyata. I think to many different AC conditioning technologies can hurt more than they help. So I'd keep the Purist going straight to some components and Shunyata (as a system with their cords) going others.

Hope this helps

Hi Dev, I keep hearing a lot about the minus k and the vibraplanes. I know they are a little different technology, but I agree with you on isolation. I have a friend in Dallas with a vibraplane under his technics table with excellent results.

On Isolation, Where most electronics seems to have a law of diminishing returns, isolation, maybe a law of increasing returns as your system resolution increases...just my experience so far

jfrech

Hi, well it's solved now.

But if it was electrical, the hum seemingly would have been constant and not related to having the stylus in the groove. When you lift the stylus...hum was gone.

It was purely mechanical ...the vibration was moving up the stand into the table/stylus. I and my dealer when through dozens of trouble shooting things...we were both surprised on the outcome !

Anyway, solved and better sound :)

jfrech

Owner
So this was a long long road. I kept having a hum ONLY when the stylus was in the groove. I kept thinking it was some sort of TT motor cartridge interaction or a issue when a load was on the cantilever-however other Lyra's did the same thing. Even sent my Lyra off for a check up (all was fine)

My amps have always had a low level hum. Normal stuff from the AC. Inaudible more than a foot or two away and not via the speakers (mechanical transformer type of hum). Apparently this hum, being mechanical, traveled through my stand, into the turntable and lp, into the stylus, out the phono stage...to the speakers then to my ears.

My Ayre's were on my Finite Elemente Master Pagode, on cerepucs or Ayre Myryle wood blocks. This FE stand is very good, easily beating what I had before.

The Grand Prix Monaco stand not only took out the hum (to be fair, I suspect any separate amp stand might have done this), but the increase in sound quality surprised me. So much so I am seriously considering a Grand Prix Silverstone for all of my front end equipment.

I highly recommend trying Grand Prix Isolation if you get the chance...

Hi Peter, thank you. I've been keeping up with your system to. Did you decide on a cartridge change? Not sure if I said this, but I'd try a few tonearm cables soon. The Purist is awesome, the newer Transparent MM2 phono (with din's now) are also very good.

I have another friend with a Loricraft and a 2 friends with the Oddesey (sp?). I think this method yeilds the best results on vac'ing...

I heard several great things on the AIVS fluid. I want to try them one day soon (maybe this winter when not much to do outside). I mostly used the Record Research/Mofi Enzyme before with my VPI.

Monks has his own fluid, Discovery and Break the Mold. Discovery is a one step and it is VERY good. Takes maybe a minute or two per side. If you do the Break the mold step ad a minute. So this is fairly fast. I am not sure it's the Monks, the Discovery fluid or the combo, but I sure do like the sound! I do the same and after cleaning use a new sleeve, I like the Mofi's the best to...

All the best to you

I can see what all the buzs is about on digital downloads. This really will change the industry I suspect. Vinyl will keep going though...

What do you mean by balance on mids and highs? Is this more making sure the mastering is done right? Or something on our end?

The DCS is the most natural in the high frequencies that I've heard for digital. Outstanding bass definition and spacial portrayal. It's just nice. Running it single ended into my Nagra PLL via Proteus Provectus interconnects and King Cobra AC cord (into Hydra VrayII) Also lets me get into some music that analog can't (yet). I'll start playing with HD downloads soon. Watched a Directv movie last night using the DCS Pucinni as the DAC. Much Much improvement for my video source. System matching is so critical, this is a great compliment to my system. Dealer really was helpful here in allowing me to try several combinations of cords/conditioner to get it right for me. Hyrda is sensitive to placement. I have it on the top shelf of my Finite Elemente rack. Not sure if I like the Cerapucs under it better dynamics/less noise, but less weight in the mid band (what I usually hear with these) I may try a set of Grand Prix Apex next. Hi,

Praesto is a new revision on most of their cables. Purist just announced it at CES and started shipping this revision just recently.

In comparison, in my system, it's more quiet and quicker. The quietness really improves the transparency also. I kept one Proteus Provectus (non Praesto) for my digital. All my other cables have the Praesto revision.

Hope this helps...

System edited: I completely rewired my system. Sold my Protues Provectus tonearm cable and interconnect. Also sold my Dominus Ferrox speaker. As well as my 20th Anniversary interconnect. I rewired the entire system with Purist Audio Designs Proteus Provectus Praesto Revision. Now this is "down in the line up" for Purist. So by selling my Dom Ferrox and 20th Anniversary it helped me fund the new lower priced cables. So essentially a trade for me. I've always wanted the same brand, make and model of cable from cartridge to speakers. I just have thought that the designers would match things a little better this way. Anyway, the Dominus Ferrox and 20th Anniversary are really among the absolute best cables in the world. My opinion, my system. The Proteus Provectus Praesto revision cables are a different sound. More linear top to bottom, more transparent, better clarity, stunning depth and image placement. The Dominus and 20th anniversary still have killer dynamics and mid bass power and a finese with power than maybe unbeatable. I am not saying the Proteus Provectus Praesto are better than Dominus or 20th Anniversary. They are "different." And for me and my system, I love the traits I mention above, transparency, clarity, depth, etc. I'll add here, just a beautiful resolution top to bottom but retaining warmth. It's seems a magical match with my Wilson's, Nagra and Ayre amps. I am thrilled with what I am hearing. Breakin takes a very long time, and for the tonearm cable, I made a adaptor and broke it in off the CD player using Purist's break in CD and music. I think this is a important step for a arm cable. Also, the interconnect is highly flexible and pretty lightwieght. Especially in comparison to 20th Anniversary which weighs more than my Nagra PLL. I think the Proteus helps with not overloading my Nagra VFS (vibration platform) which may be give me some sonic benefits here also for me. So, I am a very happy listener with these changes. Great and outstanding cable.

System edited: Hi, I swapped out my Dominus Ferrox speaker cable for Proteus Provectus with WBT spades. Even though this cable is down a step in the Purist line I think I like it better for me and my system. I have about 100 hrs on the cable via the break in cd from Purist, so only about 1/2 way through. Already it possesses a depth and transparency that is impressive in comparison, can really hear things at the frong, mid and back of the stage more. Clarity, resolution and deep bass extension improvments also. It's also a quieter cable. I'll post more as the cable fully breaks in.

Hi Rob, really love your set up, I know I've said that before. I've had Wilson's for awhile now, I miss the wood and the look it gives.

Honestly, I don't miss my BAT gear. This isn't saying anything bad about it. I always loved the sound, it always worked (for 10 yrs, cept the occassional output tube), it did do some things differently than my current set up.

The BAT's stregnths were in the mids and the imaging world class there. And maybe a please slight bloom in the botton end I kinda miss.

My Nagra/Ayre combo stregths are in transparency, detail, purity of tone and purity of tone color, image size and placement.

The real plus for me is the Nagra/Ayre has a low heat output and zero maintenance. You have to work a little with this gear to keep the midrange warmth...like careful cabling choices and exact speaker placement/room treatments.

So in the end, I am enjoying a tube front end/solid state amp. And yes, this did surprise me after over 10 years with BAT tube amps.

I am in the process of changing some of my Purist Ferrox based cabling with Fluid, I think this will slightly push the warmth that BAT gear had in spades.

Hi, 1 fuse (per amp) you can get to externally. It's on a pop out holder right next to the power cord. Then 4 more fuses per amp are internal and require the bottom cover to be popped off (flip the amp upside down - POWERED OFF - take off the hex screws and the bottom cover comes off - 5 minutes max). Then the fuses are easily installed. You won't regret this move...

My dealer in Austin stocks the fuses in the right values for the MXR's. Send me a private email and I can help you or check with your local dealer...

Hi, I alternate between fully on and standby. I listen mostly on weekends, so Thursday night I power em up and leave on. Sunday night back into standby. If I am doing some very critical listening, I'll leave them powered on for a few days in advance.

The MX R's do seem to ease out/more natural being on for a extended period (several days). It's subtle, but I can hear it. The heat output and energy consumption is very small, so this doesn't bother me.

Also, have you tried the Hi Fi tuning silver/gold fuses? I think it's 5 per MX R amp. Wow, nice improvement for me here.

Very nice system you have ! Congratulations, the room is also beautiful. Killer analog !

Hi, I seriously doubt the MXR's will have any trouble driving the Sasha's. They are killer good with my Maxx 3's, and never ever had a hint that they were even running close to a performance envelope. Even on the loudest and deepest movie soundtracks (like Master and Commander the heavy cannon shots). Sheer effortlessness all the time. I have a very large room to...

The sweet spot is hard to answer. You get different perspectives with these speakers. Just like if your siting to the right or left on stage. I prefer the middle, but when I am buying tickets, I strive to get the middle there too...

I can definately say all on the couch enjoy. My desk is 10 feet behind my couch and well to one side, I can listen there all day/night long to!

Hope this helps a little...just my 2 cents

Brian a few comments from your above post:

On the fuses, I am not sure Boulder even uses them. They have a pretty esoteric power delivery system and maybe they use breakers etc. I bought my fuses from my dealer and he showed me how to install (I couldn't wait 15 hours for him to come by :). Possibly check with your Boulder dealer or Boulder themselves. You could also call my dealer in Austin, he stocks these fuses and has your amp/pre on eval right now. (send a separate note pls)

On the BAT REX. I had it in my system for a few days. It definitely is a top flight preamp. Seems like folks are cold or hot on this piece (like the reviews). I personally liked it. However, I prefered the Nagra PLL/Ayre MXR to the BAT REX/VK150SE combo. Part was 18 tubes in the preamp, 28 tubes in the 2 amps. And all the heat, plus my HVAC running into overload. I could be wrong here, but I seem to see more people using this preamp in mostly digital systems. Maybe the BAT strengths really synch up digital? It may be a system matching thing. All I can say for sure is I loved my BAT 51SE/150SE with vinyl.

I can compare the Purist to Transparent, but not really anything else. If Transparent is a reference point for you let me know and I'll post more.

As far as character, the Purist cables are very natural. Some decribe this as warmth. Highly transparent, extended, super quiet, rich. Some say it's dark, however, don't mistake the darkness for lack of info...it's all their. Their shielding is amazingly quiet stripping away noise giving a "dark" first thought. I'd recommend either the Proteus Provecus models or the 20th Anniversary. The 20th is copper/silver/gold in a fluid/ferrox mix. The Proteus is single crystal copper in a fluid. I still think this is worth a audition for you.

Here's a review of the purist and some comparison the a Kubala:

I don't know if you'll like em, the purist do sound awesome to me in my system. ymmv !

Hi Brian,

I hear you on the BAT 150SE amps. I really struggled with selling them. I think they do a few things rarely found in other electronis - mostly they get the "weight" on each note right, especially in the mids. All that said, the heat, the 6c33b issues, and top end (6h30 tube signature) are what caused me to look around. I have really enjoyed my Ayre MX R's. Wonderful amps. I can only imagine what your Boulder's sound like, my dealer in Austin has 'em in on evalution - i hope to hear them soon.

These Maxx 3's are my 4th set of Wilsons. (WP 6, 8, Maxx 2 before) I have always stuggled with keeping the weight and body on the instruments. Most of the time you get body or transparency. These traits seems to tug opposite ways.

When I went with my Ayre MX R's, I was very close on also getting a KX R preamp, but ultimately wanted to keep tubes to reatain that warmth and body in mids, with out really sacrificing transparency that good SS is so great at. The Nagra PLL has been wonderful in this regard. My last preamp BAT VK50SE/51SE I kept for nearly 10 yrs. I see that also with with Nagra/Ayre combo (but we'll see :)

I will say that system tweaking has been critical and the breakin on the Maxx 3's seem to take a very long time to get that final little bit. (I've had my maxx 3's since Nov '08). Seems like a touch of warmth comes in after months of playing time.

By tweeking very very careful expirimentation with room treatments, curtains, cabling, footers, and lately very fine changes on my Tri Planar tonearm, have all added up. Also, putting the grills back on the Wilsons.

I am not sure if you have ever talked to Albert, he lives very close to you (loop 12 and hwy 75). Might be worth it to try a few Purist power cords and a interconnect. (Send me a separate note if your curious)

It may be time for vinyl audition. It has its drawbacks. But it's strength is the body and the mid range glory.

Do you have the Hi-Fi tuning Gold/Siver fuses in your system? I found this was big difference in my SS amps. On the warmth/naturalness side. For me, 12 fuses @$25 each, 2-4 weeks breakin (critical here!), nice improvement exactly in the area you mention.

So this is a long winded answer for you. In the end, my experience is close to yours. I've had to work at it to keep that body intact as I increased my transparency (moved to solid state amps). I love my combo, I heard it 100 times at my dealer with his Alexandria's. You have great electronics....though to. Doubtful it's the weak link.

(one more thought, do you keep you preamp/amps fully powered "ON" a 100% of the time? or standby?)

If you're ever in Austin, or just want to make a special trip, let me know! Good luck

Hi Lenny, where do you live? (I'm in Austin, Tx) Nice combo btw :).

The Nagra seems to not need much or it if did, very subtle over time. The MX R's sounded broken at first and take 100's of hours. Like 2-3 months. I'd just leave em on and playing 24x7 for at least the first month. Everything just eases and begins to flow. It's baby steps all the way but after a month or so you'll notice it. The break in is NOT subtle on the MXR's btw, it's a nice change.

I also tend to leave my MX R's full on unless I am out of town. The amps seem to sound more relaxed and warm this way. It's subtle. The Nagra pre amp emits a turn on "pop" (if you're amps are on), if you turn the volume way down and put it in mute, the pop is benign (it's a feature of this preamp-one less mute switch helps the transparency i think)

I went from super great tube amps (BAT VK150SEs) and really fretted on SS amps. After living with my Ayre's now for 6 months or so, I am happy I made the switch. More resolution, effortlessness, much much quieter background, no tube hassles and dramatically less heat !

What speakers and cabling are you using?

Hi Dgad, thanks for your comments. On my room, I have few treatments, ASC tower traps in the corners and a few ASC products on my walls at the reflection points.

I also have a few strategically placed pillows in the corners. I suspect you're right, a well designed, treated just right (not to much or to little) is a killer investment.

Hi Pradeep,

Thanks for the compliment!

I am thinking about a cartridge, maybe early next year. I'd like to do some room stuff next, maybe get the Rive's offering and make sure my room is doing it's best. I agree I've had the Skala a long time, it's really a great value and hard to beat.

I do think the Transfiguration you just bought is on my short list. Can you help me with what you heard as changes over your former Skala?

I have a few friends with the Air Tight PC 1 and Supreme and they just love em. I think thinks come from the same family as your Transfiguruation. I also think this is true for the My Sonic Lab's Hyper Eminient.

I could be wrong here, but I think these are all small variations from the same manufacturer. I think your Transfiguration is likely a great and even a better match for my Tri Planar arm (than my Skala)

How is your Nagra VPS? I am still loving mine !

I have made a number of small changes (tweeks) the last few weeks, they seem to be adding up to nice step up in transparency, resolution, imaging focus...

1)To the left of the left speaker is dormer window (can see it in my last system pic partially) This is right at a first refelction point. So I hung a few pillows on wall inside the dormer and in the top corner. Small improvement-cleaned up the left image some.

2)Put the Grand Prix power supply on Cerepucs. Again, small but worthwhile.

3)Surpise! I took the black cloth of the ASC tower traps. Holy cow did this clean up the soundstage, increase resolution and detail. Moral here, be careful if you "conceal" your tube traps !

4)Took the damping trough off my Tri Planar tonearm. Per dougdeacon's tips. This is a nice improvement for any tri planar owner not using the damping trough. Noise floor seeming lowers and the details emerge. Pretty nice improvement here.

Another lesson in careful set up.

Hi Peter, I was thinking about your comments above on your current system. I just re-read your system and the posts.

1)What power cord are you using on your SME motor controller?
2)When was the last time you replaced the belt and cleaned the motor pulley and sub platter (where the belt rides)
3)Have you tried other suppport options besides what you are using today? Speciffically I am think of symposium shelf and/or roller blocks vs maple and heavy cones.

These 3 things always helped me "tweek" my former SME 20/2 table.

I hate to say this, but you might be going downt the same path I did...love love the SME, but might take a direct drive to hit those transients...

Just a few thoughts.

jfrech

Owner
Hi Peter, Moving away from SME was a difficult decision. I have dearly loved my SME 20/2 and IV.Vi arm. It is just a great table.

I did extensively compare the Grand Prix Monaco/Tri Planar with my SME 20/2 IV.Vi. The cartrdige and tonarm cable were constant (I had a special din connector on the Tri Planar VII u ii version)

Grand Prix Monaco/Tri Planar positives: Transparency, image width, depth, height, quietness of background, impact/dynamics, PRaT, detail retrieval. I realize this is a long list of positives and most of these aren't subtle, more a pronouced change. The clamping system on the Grand Prix seems better, although I don't/can't say if this contributes to the sound improvements. I will say the adjustable VTA on the Tri Planar arm is a big deal and I am not sure I can live with a fixed VTA arm again (or I'll have to have a multiarm table with different arms for differing record heights)

The SME 20/2 IV.Vi Positives I miss, just the way it was built and fit/finish. Seductiveness and bloom in the mids and bass. Bass impact. More rich tonal balance.

Keep in mind, I loved my SME and kinda wish I could have kept it and the Grand Prix.

One thing I might recommend to you is trying a Tri Planar on your SME. I never did this, but I suspect some of the things I love are from the arm and some from the Grand Prix Monaco table.

Hope this helps !!

Hi Neil, well since I've tried Proteous Provectus interconnects and you the PP speaker cable, maybe the bigger difference is in the interconnects and tonearm wire vs the speaker cable?

From my experience, I'd say the tonearm wire first ...(I went from Venastas tonearm to Proteus Provectus tonearm...on the phono to pre I've used Venastas, Opis, Dominus Ferrox and now Proteus Provectus)

Besides, Venastas is very good. It's (the interconnect) embarassed several 4k (read more than twice as expensive other name brand) interconnects I used to own.

I think system matching as this point is the most important, as you above. I bet those electrostats sound great in your system !

I hope we all outlive this recession. My credit card is outa control...not sure if that helps or hurts the economy!

Hi Neil, I have about 48 hours on the Purist Proteus Provectus inter-connects now. (2 runs of the Purist break in cd also) Burning in on my cd player and moving over to my phono to pre now (where they'll stay)

Really is a amzing cable. The depth is coming around now with some warth, retaining every else I said above.

I loved my Venastus when I had it (tonearm and interconnect) it's a great cable. The Proteous Provectus is about double the money...but it's about double the cable. If you can ever get a demo or buy one set, I'd suggest it...

Samhar, :) sounds like we are hearing the same thing! I trying to find a combo of things I can sell to fund a 2nd set of Proteus Provectus from my CD/DVD to my preamp ! I have a set of Purist Opis (similar to Venastas, little warmer and more dynamic) that I may sell soon...

System edited: I replaced my Purist Dominus Ferrox interconnect with Proteus Provectus (from phono stage to preamp). I realize this is a cheaper cable in the purist line up. However, I think from a system matching perspective I stepped up. This cable is incredibly quiet and posseses a beauty, clarity, resolution in the midband that is wonderful. It's still breaking in, but I can already make the above comments. It's the same thing I heard when I switched my tonearm cable from Venastus to Proteus Provectus. Don't overlook this cable is Purist line, I think it's special.

Wow Scott, your system looks great ! I bet it's sounds stellar too! I'll always miss my BAT gear. It served me very well over the years. I love how you integrated your music and video together. Cool !!

Soliver: sorry on sat, it wasn't my new toys...it was the boss getting mad at me :). I LOVED the Nagra VPA's and that 845 tube. Wasn't to hot (heat). I felt like the Ayre's gave better bottom end control and a sense of continuousness/effortless all over. Plus my gosh are they quiet allowing incredible amount of detail to come through. The Nagra's have a magic/seductiveness that's hard to pass up. I was real close on the Nagra's, I think my Wilson Maxx 3's have so much "beauty" in the mids, it allowed me to go with the Ayres and get the best of both set's of virtue's. Honestly, my former BAT VK150SE are right in the same leaque...heat and tubes was the factor to change...not as much on the sound.

Neil: I love the solid core Purist phono cable (proteus provectus). Shocked at how it bettered the Venastus. So much so I think I am trading out a set of Dominus Ferrox interconnects for Proteus Provectus. I feel it has more clarity and lower resolution. They are both good however, it's system matching thing I think in the end on these two.

Thanks for all the comments !!!

The big sonics changes are in transparency, blackness of background, detail retrieval, top end sweetness, realism and extension, PRaT. I am also happy to buy made in america for most (just phono, pre and rack overseas) Thanks to everyone I emailed, visited and called. I appreciate everyone here at audiogon!

I think it's time to go buy your wife something VERY nice. Because she is going to have to deal with your Maxx 3's being where they are.

My pics aren't lying...My dealer did move em out a little in some final tuning (maybe 3 inches), but each room is different.

I'd stick to what your dealer recommends. I know in my room 1/4" movements make a big deal in tuning...

Congrats on great system you have !!!

I have a Ayre KX R and MX R on loan this week end from my dealer in Austin. DAMN .... has good solid state come a LOOOONNNNGGG way. It's been over 10 years since I've had any SS in my vinyl set up.

I know it needs a day or two to warm up and settle down. Listening to Keith Jarret Yesterdays (vinyl) right now...tranparency all over and extension on top is just beautiful!

Hi Vito,

No I didn't change any of the room treatments from the wp8's to the maxx 3's. I did move them subtly around a little. So no "ceilling" treatment. My image height is stunning (at least to me) so I guess I never really thought about it. I've heard the Maxx 3 in 2 other rooms and I don't seem to have a reflection issue comparing my setup with those...good question though, and you never know. (i don't know what i don't know :)

Robert: not exact sure the purpose of a dac link for a vinyl guy...

jfrech

Hi Yes, I'll likely go further! Hard to decide and money is a little tight. A 52SE or a REX is certainly one thought. Have considered other preamps like Nagra or maybe Aesthetix. Also maybe a better table or just arm. My worry on the REX is heat (live in Texas). I did listen to the REX...it's pretty darn good.

Honestly, it sounds very very good as is. The Maxx 3's have really broken in as of late. They have surpassed my hopes.

Right now, I have just been spending a few $$'s on vinyl. (which I have as much fun with as a new component)

jfrech

Owner
Hi, like way more transparent, not just a little. Transparency in spades but with beauty at the same time.

Honestly I'd compare the maxx 3's closer to the Alexandria series 1 than the previous maxx 2. It's a much improved speaker in every dimension.

And the maxx 2 is still world class.

Hi Gail, I think the Maxx 3's are still breaking in. It's more subtle now...but easing, more relaxing, resolution increasing. They are more than I expected/hoped for at this point. Incredible upgrade over the stellar Maxx 2's.

Today I am getting the best sound I have ever had.

Made a few changes-added a Nagra VFS under my Nagra VPS -umm wow-:) should put the wow in caps! I'll post a few pics soon on the Nagra VFS. Also swapped the Purist 20th Anv. cable to be inbetween the 51SE and (now) 75SE from where it was between the phono stage and preamp. I have one amp off to the side not on currently...not sure I need BAT 150SE's with the Maxx 3's. Now my Purist Dominus Ferrox is between the Nagra VPS and BAT VK51SE.

I'll try the BAT VK150SE's again in a few days vs the BAT 75SE. I'd like to be able to sell one amp and fund a new tonearm (Graham or TriPlanar) or a better preamp (Nagra PLL or BAT REX)

Anyway, small changes yield BIG results !! Happy New Year to all !

Hi Tom, thanks so much, I hope that shiny new cd player is sounding amazing for you!

Gayle: They made a nice change after about 24 hours, then maybe another move after about 100 hours. I am guessing from here on out for several 100 more hours they will gradually ease some more. Honestly, they sounded amazing on the first note with 1 second of playing time. That very first note I knew it was something special!

jfrech

Owner
dgad: hmm i didn't check out the specs. I did get a chance to speak with Wilson Audio and hear the maxx 2's next to the maxx 3's. They did comment they are easier to drive than the 2's. And the volume seems louder even with level matching. Wilson Audio commented that the better timing makes everything arrive at your ear more precisely giving the impression of it being louder.

They also seem much more dynamic both in sound and feel (like the couch/floor vibrating). And this is with Maxx 2's broken in vs Maxx 3's with only about 36 hours of time.

Honestly, they don't sound like the Maxx II. They sound much more like the Alexandria Series 1. Everything is so relaxed and natural. Yet full of power, impact, texture. The spatial clues, how you can sense movement (like a brush on a drum). This sense of movement is uncanny. Better height, width, depths and front to back placement. Simply more musical information coming out to my ears. And again I know my maxx 3's have a break in process to go through.

It is not a subtle change. It's a major upgrade.

jfrech

Owner
dgad: I've watched yours to and I agree on the similarities. Very tough :) right now. Sold my left arm and maybe have to sell 1 amp, plus the Esoteric DV50s to pay off my credit card!

I have thought long and hard about a new arm, the Graham Phantom and Tri-Planar and where I'd go next. I've heard Albert Porter's Airtight PC1 a lot in a SME 312s arm. That might be a good choice to, move the Lyra to one of the other arms.

I use my Esoteric mostly for movies (which it's a killer platform for dvd's) and breakin. Maybe listen to cd's/sacd's 5% of the time. So something next on the vinyl front end I have to agree.

Thanks Mary and Albert, both of you will have to stop by soon!

I have about 36 hours on them now. It's a major upgrade over the maxx 2's and the WP's. I know they are not broken in, but they already have that ease and naturalness the maxx 2's had, so it only get's better from here.

I'll post more thoughts as they (and I) settle down :)

I'll post some more pics later today as well...

Hi Gayle,

Sorry to hear about your dad.

It depends how much you want to spend re: TT. For $500-600 + cartridge I'd go with a used Linn Axis. I wish I never sold mine. Linn was nuts to stop making those tables. The used price on these seem to go up $100 every year...as people realize how good they are. Next I'd do a Rega, even buy it new, for $1500-$2500, get the model you can afford (below $1000, just get the Linn Axis). After this, you really have to spend serious money and have a dazzling array of choices. Again, I had a Rega p25, again killer, shouldn't have sold it (Took my SME 20/2 to seriously beat it)

Classical1: yeah I hear ya. All those tubes not green friendly, but it keeps me from driving so maybe it balances out :) Thank you BTW

I got a chance to hear the new Maxx 3 yesterday, right next to the Maxx 2. Same system. All level matched. The Maxx 3 is pretty amazing, it is not a improved Maxx 2. It's in a different class and much much closer to the Alexandria x-2 than the Maxx 2.

I am glad I have a order in for the Maxx 3.

The simplist way to decribe the differences are the Maxx 2 is awesome speaker. One of the best for reproducing recorded music. The Maxx 3 leaves you with the impression your at the live event vs listening to a recording. The Maxx 3 infuses the music with life, realism and beauty. Startling improvement.

Hi, (it's john)

I am so hoping for that result on the Maxx 3's. I get to visit the Wilson factory in 2 weeks with my dealer, hopefully I'll get to hear the Maxx 3 next to the Maxx 2 and maybe even the Alexandria. I'll post some thoughts from that listening session, but mainly when I have em in my own system...

Hi Mark, thanks for the comments, I appreciate it. Yes my 50SE/51SE I've had for 8 years now. Everything has changed around it, it seems to be hard to beat. I am considering a 52SE, Aesthetix Callisto or a Nagra PL L. Not sure when...

I replaced my first set of NOS 6h30's after 3 yrs (I should have bought more sets back then when the NOS were cheap!). I kept them and they are in my VK150SE amps right now-I do like the NOS 6h30 slightly better than the sovteks - top end is nicer.

My current 6h30's have over 4 years on them. I recently had a BAT REX in my system and a Nagra PL L. I like both of these preamps, for differing reasons, but I really don't feel like my current tubes are worn out in my 51SE. I have been suspicious of this, I do expect fresh tube to be a little better, it's just I have to go from NOS 6h30's to sovteks/EH's. I am sure it's a trade off...

So anyway, the 6h30's seem to last awhile in the BAT Preamps...

Hi Vito,

Thank You.

The Maxx 2 is just a much better speaker. It does so many things better all around. NOTHING goes backwards from your WP 7's. I had the WP 6's and 8's, but have heard the 7's plenty. Bass is just the start, yes more deep, better image, much better articulation and detail. The Maxx is more seamless, sound closer to a planar type speaker in this regard. Everything is highly integrated, not that the wp 7 isn't, just the maxx pulls it off much better. It's more musical than the wp 8's I had, with out loosing any detail, top end extension...it's a tough thing to describe. The images are bigger, taller, wider deeper with more air around. Just effortless as all it does.

As the load goes...about the same, my volume setting is the same on my preamp.

Also, Wilson just announced a Maxx 3, it's on their website, I have talked to my dealer and have the new Maxx 3 on order. It's (again) a much improved design.

All of this said however, your WP 7's are still one of the best speakers made. Nothing, NOTHING wrong with them!

jfrech

Owner
Thanks, glad you could come over. Maybe we need to start a music group every so often in Austin. My 51SE is back in the system and the REX is gone. Still sounds killer. If you want to hear it again with digital, just let me know...

jfrech

Owner
Hi, I have a few weeks on my Maxx 2's now. They are clearly a better speaker in every area. The WP 8's were still great. The Maxx 2's just present more information, everywhere. More dynamic, more revealing, bigger, wider, deeper stage. More delicate, yet more powerful. I am sure I have more break in to go.

I also swapped my russian 6h8c's that were old in my amps. Replaced with the Tung Sol 6sn7's and swapped the EH 6v6's for Tung Sol's new production as well. The Tung sols are new, the others old, so I get a bump from just that, but the tung sols are cleary sweeter and more lifelike in the mids in the top end. I like em and they are cheap. Which is nice.

jfrech

Owner
Unoear: Thanks for the note. I'd love to take the short drive to SA and listen to your set up. Plus I'd love to check out yoru AC-3 and the Craz.

Hi Dave,

I've been thinking about that. Just a little nervous. I had a MOV fail and my dealer opened up one of the amps. I did get a little squeemish seeing my expensive purist wire stoping 2 feet short of the input section with what looks like a piece of extention cord wire.

Question for you, as soon as my speakers break in, I am going to replace my dozen 6sn7's and the 4 6v6's. Do you like the Tung sol or the EH 6sn7's? Same question for the 6v6's. I can't affort NOS for this many tubes.

Thanks, maybe I should use some of my frequent flyer miles and fly you and your soldering iron down to Austin...

System edited: Hi, Wilson Maxx 2's are here. Dailed in by my fabolous Austin Wilson dealer and breaking in very nicely! I also changed my phono stage from a BAT VK P10SE Superpak to a Nagra VPS. I had my heart set on a Aesthetix Io Eclipse but couldn't swing the $$'s with the Maxx 2's. The Wilson Maxx 2's are a major upgrade from my Watt Puppy 8's in every single way. I can even proclaim that with only 50 hours playing time on them. The Nagra VPS compared to my previous BAT is more transparent, has a better soundstage (width-depth-placement), and just tonally "more like live unamplified music." The BAT was pretty darn good though. The new phono cable (Purist Proteus Provectus) now is getting some time on the Nagra VPS. I just took a few pics. As my room get's cleaned up I'll post a few better pics. Right now, I am seriously enjoying music ! I am going to donate my video projection system to my church.

Hi !!

On the purist cable, I just trust it. So no, I didn't compare to anything else. I had upgraded a few power cords earlier this year from Dominus Ferrox and Fluid to 20th Anniversary. Honestly it was incredible the difference. So I never really considered anything other than stepping up in the Purist line up.

The Provectus tonearm cable is killer in my system. Stop by if you're ever in Austin. To me, it's as big a cartridge upgrade. I am VERY happy with it. Not a single downside from Venustas...I may swap one of my Dominus Ferrox interconnects for Proteus Provectus. It's that good IMHO.

Since my Wilson Maxx's were installed today, even more happy :) !

On the 6v6s I tried, no real significant change. The 6sn7's I tried were RCA's. little warmer, softer, I ended up going back to Russian 6h8c's, they seemed best and what the amp seems voiced for...

Hi right now I am using Purist Venestas XLR interconnect and a Transparent Powerlink XL Reference ac cord. It sits on a Arcici stand and a Symposium Svelt shelf.

Other power cords I've used are FIM Gold and a Kimber Palladian 10. I like the Transparent here the best of the 3. The other cords worked much better on my amp and preamp until I tried a Purist Dominus...that's by far the best on the amps.

I used to have all Transparent reference cabling, for some reason, this ac cords just likes the DV 50. Purist Venastas for interconnects are hard to beat. They smoked my Transparent Ref x xl previously for 1/2 the price.

Good luck !

Albert stopped by to help me tune the system, the Dominus speaker cord made me realize I need to change my VTA, VTF and remove some isolation from under the amp. Was it a big improvement over the Hovland? Oh my yes.
