Description

For the enjoyment of music.  Lot's of changes over the years.  I typically won't buy something unless I can listen to it in my system.   Spending a lot of time recently searching out well recorded and interesting music via hi res downloads.   I have a really nice vinyl collection mostly Jazz and pop.  Digital I'm filling out my classical titles and more modern recordings.  Jan '16

John,

I’ve been waiting for you to comment on the Spiral Groove Centroid. There are lots of positive comments about it in press and from users.

How is it compared to Triplanar and Schroeder you had? Everyone says noise floor on the Centroid is out of this world but what about tonal balance?

albertporter

John,

We need to listen here and your place. I have not heard progress on your system in forever.

albertporter

John,

If you want to hear Ricks cable I have them here.

albertporter

Really the best I have heard my system..

I have to make a trip there, lets work on that. Seriously.

As for best sound, I was thinking same about my speakers while watching the two movies we put on this evening.

I hope with analog this next week and the new tubes in driver position I'll feel the same way with music.

I think the time Andy spent burning your Rockport was a great head start on your break in.

I just tweaked the VTF on the Lyra Atlas..it was around 1.7...I got it spot on at 1.72 per the instructions...a bit more resolution, ease and dynamics..

That is precisely where I run my Lyra Atlas, 1.72 on my Winds.

albertporter

John,

I think that will help but I've heard from several sources that it's good to do a long session followed by some down time.

Supposedly that helps condition not only the drivers but the capacitors and other components as well.

Obviously I have no proof of this concept but I've been putting from 10 to 16 hours a day on the Focal and then giving them a rest overnight.

Lloydlee, if you visit John you're welcome to my home for music as well.

John and I both live in Texas, a very short flight or few hours by car.

For all you Grand Prix Monaco and Silverstone owners...don't forget to change your dampers every 12-18 moths. I just replaced the hanger dampers and shelf pads under my turntable shelf...lower noise, deeper bass, better resolution. 10 minutes of work...it's not subtle...
John, I was changing Grand Prix pads at 8 months rather than a year. With the VTL amps being so heavy it was vital to performance to not wait a year.

Probably not nearly so critical on moderate weight equipment since stress is less on the dampers.

Hi Albert, yes I purchased the Koda K 10. I had it here on a loan for about a month and just couldn't be with out one. It's a pretty special preamp.
It must be to get you to move from the Nagra, I know you liked it.
anyway need to come listen soon!
Lets do that, and if you drive up again maybe you can make time to listen with us again.

albertporter

John,

Just tried to call you. Did you buy the Robert Koda K10 or trying it out? Sounds like it replaces the Nagra.

How will the K10 work for you with only one XLR in and one XLR out?

albertporter

John, the Rockport Altair look beautiful in your space, I prefer their look over the Wilson.

I hope we can get together at your place so I can hear them. They were nice at THE Show but conditions there are no contest for your listening room, especially now with your acoustic upgrades.

John,

I miss you living in Dallas, I didn't even recognize your daughter the last time you brought her by. I still think of her as a "little girl" sitting on my sofa with us.

If you're in town Memorial Day come by and pick up the Allnic H3000V. I also have the new baby Allnic 1201 phono and DHT preamp. We can talk about those and you decide what you want to play with.

My Focal are supposed to be here Wednesday and I have a call into a piano mover too. I chuckled when I read that comment in your post, no way can I move my speakers either.

albertporter

John,

Appears the month of May is lucky for those of us waiting for delivery of our new speakers.

You owe me an invitation to hear the Rockport after you have them broken in a bit.

albertporter

John,

I looked at the K-10 website and appears the preamp has super low gain (6 DB) and only one XLR in and one XLR out. Remainder are RCA.

Is that correct?

albertporter

That room would look much better in person. :^).

albertporter

John,
The Lyra Atlas was in the Micro Seiki, soon to be in the Graham Phantom and then the SME V-12.

Let me know a good time, I would love to come listen again.

albertporter

I need to hear it, when's the listening party?

albertporter

Congratulations John, I know that had to make an incredible improvement.

albertporter

John, once you have the Maxx 3 broken in and a free weekend I sure would like to come listen.

Are you still traveling in and out of the country for Big Blue?

albertporter

Congratulations John, I hope to be able to listen with you again, maybe after you get everything broken in.

I visited John a week or so ago and heard this system first hand.

I've always respected Wilson Audio due to their construction quality, marketing and customer service, but for me they were always a bit dry and analytical.

Forget that with this system, it's musically involving, has great resolution and almost zero distortion. Too, these speakers only have a couple of hundred hours on them, so I'll wager they improve with additional run in.

John has a wonderful room, even without any acoustical treatment other than tube traps. This has gone from a good system ( with WP 6's) to an amazing system with all the addition of the WP 8's and new room.

No doubt the SME analog rig and all tube electronics are helping but the speakers are a big part of any systems sound. Whatever the design changes implemented by Wilson in this new series, they are very positive.

Congratulations John.

albertporter

Congrats on the new house John! I hope to get invited to the new space.

You left your want list behind after our music session, I sent it via email.

albertporter

I need an invitation to come back over and hear the changes. Put some of those kitty cats away and make room.
