Description

this room and system is the result of 10 years in High End audio. my system has been stable for a couple of years (except for transport and amplifier upgrades within the same brand). the room has been in the planning stage for about 18 months and i actually moved in a little over a month ago.

my audio philosphy is to have the system get out of the way of the event. i like as pure and simple a signal path as possible and, at this point, prefer passive to active gain stages. i love all the formats and enjoy having lot's of music.....vinyl is my favorite but i listen to at least 60% digital. the new room really reveals the benefits of SACD over redbook.

the system and room truely allow the event to be recreated before me. i love the way the speakers disappear and i am transported to another place/time.

i have choosen my cables, sources, amps, speakers to have as little of their own sound as possible.

recently, i upgraded my digtial transport from the modified Philips SACD 1000 to the new emmlabs CDSD.....this was a significant step upward in performance.

Just been reading through some of the old threads on your system page and wanted to know if you son is still producing music servers. I have a separate DAC and would very much like to be able to load up all my CDs to a server and also Hi-Res for playback through the DAC.
Incidentally I purchased the Speed turntable mat and what a difference it has made to the Wave Kinetics - thanks for passing along that tip.

Mike. Your system is looking wonderful. You must be very happy. I recently received the Speed mat on the strength of comments on this thread and I am extremely pleased with it. I was skeptical but it really makes a difference. One question - when I received my NVS turntable it came with a clamp but no washer. Is this something I should have Jonathan send over. I have been using the clamp on its own.

I have done a similar thing with only my monoblock amplifiers between my speakers and the rest of the system off to the right of my room. This requires a run of about 7 meters from the preamp to the amps. Until recently I was using a single ended interconnect which sounded fine but am now awaiting a balanced cable from Ocellia and I expect that with this there will be no degradation but will let you know.

As I mentioned before the Audiopax Maggiore 100 is worthy of serious consideration. I auditioned the demo model and the final version should be arriving in a few weeks. It remains one of a very few (likely the only) SET to operate at Class A1 at 100W. I can send you the full specifications by email if you would like but based on these specs, technically they are a very good match to the Evolution Acoustic speakers.

Hope all is well with you.

Out of interest, are you also using a digital server as a source along with the analog and digital rig? You mentioned in an earlier post that your son was producing a server for those that might be interested and I appreciate you did not want to plug it too much for obvious reasons.

I was prompted to mention this as saw an article recently from Pacific Northwest Audio Society and it shows a photo with you and Jonathan and behind you some of your components including what looks like an Apple CD Drive. I might be interested in this as have a great DAC inside my APL modded Esoteric CD Player.

Have a good Christmas Mike. I have treated myself to the NVS table - very excited to be joining this club. I think I will run it either with the Talea I or Talea II and an A90. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on other cartridges that work well with the Talea arms.

Thanks Mike - could not agree more. I have spent the entire day today listening to some of my favourite Vinyl and CDs and the speakers continue to amaze me. Thanks also for the separate advice on dialing in the speakers - my next project. I am also considering the Wave Kinetics footers for these speakers.

I have just made the move to MMTwos which arrived yesterday and which I set up with the help of a friend. I had some difficulties with the latch locking system but finally managed to resolve it. Speakers are at factory settings and although early days they are sounding absolutely wonderful. I am amazed at how well the sub integrates - it really is one speaker with wonderful transparency - my first ribbon tweeter speaker.

I am driving the speakers with a SET Audiopax Model 88 (30W) and the audiopax model 5 preamp. You mentioned you may consider a SET in your future and I would suggest you put the Audiopax Maggiore on your shortlist - I auditioned the demo model and placed an order for the final model which should arrive next month - 100W Class A1 - using 6 KT88s and effectively 6 discrete single ended amps together in each monoblock.

Worth an audition.
