Description

this room and system is the result of 10 years in High End audio. my system has been stable for a couple of years (except for transport and amplifier upgrades within the same brand). the room has been in the planning stage for about 18 months and i actually moved in a little over a month ago.

my audio philosphy is to have the system get out of the way of the event. i like as pure and simple a signal path as possible and, at this point, prefer passive to active gain stages. i love all the formats and enjoy having lot's of music.....vinyl is my favorite but i listen to at least 60% digital. the new room really reveals the benefits of SACD over redbook.

the system and room truely allow the event to be recreated before me. i love the way the speakers disappear and i am transported to another place/time.

i have choosen my cables, sources, amps, speakers to have as little of their own sound as possible.

recently, i upgraded my digtial transport from the modified Philips SACD 1000 to the new emmlabs CDSD.....this was a significant step upward in performance.

i have written an article in Positive Feedback regarding my room building experience.....here is a link;

Mike.... I've had the luxury of spending a few hours in my sound room enjoying some great tunes. During my listening sessions I started reading your posts from the beginning til about Sept. 2010. Ran out of time due to it being Father's Day. Happy Father's Day btw!

I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed reading about your audio journey. I've been through quite a journey myself. Different but none the less a journey that has been filled with lots of education and appreciation of music and gear.

Just wanted to say "Thanks!" for sharing......

Can't wait to hear about the MM7's!

My MM2's/NVS/DarTZeel/PD/Studer A80/ATR-102 is sounding better than ever! JT was gracious enough to come over after Newport to do some tweaking with the MM2's.

Enjoy Father's Day Mike!

Looks great Mike! This is one of those "Someday!" upgrades to aspire to.

In the meantime I'm going to do the larger halo upgrade and save some pennies.

Have fun!

...."I also have two separate phono's in my pre but I ordered with one MC and MM, could always send it back and have the MM converted to a MC but Kevin has been working on a Reference phono which I'm awaiting to hear so we will see. "

A new reference phono? Do tell!

Hey Mike!

Checking in to see how things are progressing with the Equi=tech? Also, what's your current thought on your record cleaner? Still doing a great job on the vinyl?

Thanks!

Ed

Mike, run out and get the Avatar Soundtrack. Great dynamics and slam! Sounds great on my humble system and should rock on yours!

Have a great weekend!

Ed

Hello Steve! Thanks so much for the info! Beautiful workmanship on your plinths and tables!

Ed

Mike... you're killing me! Haven't been able to get the monoblocks out of my mind since Vegas. You are so right in regards to the workmanship. They are one great piece of gear.

I might be one step ahead of you on the "sell to the wife" thing..... Teresa really liked the color scheme versus my black Sig's..... Of course she has no idea how much the cost! That might be a bit of a problem but at least she likes the way they look! Bet they'll sound ridiculous with your setup!

That Dobbins 301 was gorgeous. Wonder what that baby is going for????

Have a great long weekend!

Mike, hope you're feeling better today! Glad to hear that you made the best of it and locked yourself in your sanctum to convalesce. My A90 has only about 20 hours on it but I have to say, I'm hearing so much more than ever before. I'm sure the MM2's have a lot to do with it as well.

Take care and hope you're back in one piece soon. Enjoy the holidays!

Ed and Teresa

Hi Mike!

Our Thanksgiving was great and hopefully yours was as well! The MM2's are not spiked yet. Trying to get a bunch of hours on them prior to making final placement adjustments. They've been running in 24 hours a day for the past 4 days. Got a long ways to go before I can get to the 1,000 hour mark.

Been really enjoying the tunes! You're right about the non-fatigueing sound! Just incredible!

I'll keep you posted!

Hey Mike!

All went as planned and I've got a pair of MM2's producing some great music! Probably only have 8 hours on them so far but I have to say..... what a difference versus my Maxx 3's. I could never get the Maxx's to produce satisfactory bass in my room. No matter where we moved them they just couldn't muster up any oommph. These MM2's are unreal in the bass region. I've got the settings at flat and they just stomp all over the Maxx's. The entire presentation is so different. I've been listening to alot of my favorite discs and records and enjoying experiencing them all over again.

I've got to do some tweaking with the speaker setup. Did some toe adjustments earlier today along with making sure they were at the same distance into the room, etc..... I'm not the best at this stuff so I'm sure these MM2's could sound even better with some expert tweaking.

The A90 is pretty amazing. I think I've got maybe 15 hours on it so far. Again, it's such a different presentation versus my Benz LP. I'm in total agreement with you .... 'truth sayer' it is! Just had Ray Brown - Soular Energy playing and I could really feel the weight of the bass, never got that from the Maxx's.

Going back to the tunes.... I'll keep you posted on the developments.

Happy listening!

theaudioassociation

You got it Mike! Full report to follow!

theaudioassociation

Hiya Mike!

Well.... haven't really fired up the system in a while. Work is killing me. But...... if all goes as planned, might have a reason to have an all day listening day on Sunday. MM2's might land on Saturday! Got my fingers crossed!

theaudioassociation

Hey Mike!

Got my A90 mounted... by Brooks and Brian Berdan. Did an excellent job. The cartridge sounds very different from my Benz LP. Gotta put some hours on it but out of the box it sounds pretty good!

How are you feeling? Got the bug out of your system yet?

Ed

theaudioassociation

Mike, congrats on getting your Dart's back. Sounds like the upgrade was a huge success!

Just got the A90 mounted up today. So far it's very impressive! I know I've got a ways to go before I get to the real juicy tunes but I have to say I like what I'm hearing with only a few hours on it.

One question I have is what load setting on your phone stage you're using. I only have the following setting available:

MC: 100, 250, 470, 1K, 2.5K, 4.7K, 47K

I believe the specs say to use > 10 Ohm. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed so I'm at a loss on what setting to choose.

Hope you're feeling better!

Ed

theaudioassociation

Oooohhh, new boards! Can't wait to see what your thoughts are when you get them back!

Take it very slow. Had pneumonia 2 years ago and now any time I've got an inkling that there's something funny going on in my lungs I have to go right in and get it checked out. I'll never go down that road again! You're doing it right. Rest, rest and more rest!

Ed

theaudioassociation

Mike,

Very interesting... I got sick around the exact same time you did. Mine was some sort of viral thing floating around in my lungs. Still lingering but I feel lots better. Hope you do as well!

Jonathan says I should have the cartridge in a couple more weeks. Can't wait to see how it measures up in my new system (MM2's).

Take it slow Mike!

theaudioassociation

Mike, thanks for the great write up on the A90. I'm eagerly awaiting mine from Jonathan at Chambers.

Talked with Dr. Chris Feickert at the end of his workshop with Fremmer. He said that the A90 was the best cartridge he's heard. He made sure to mention that he's heard many a cartridge and this A90 was something very special.

Also got Chad at Acoustic Sounds to recommend some new vinyl. So needless to say, Teresa and I were carrying some prized treasures back on the plane.

Also eagerly awaiting my MM2's! Hopefully in a couple more weeks!

Happy listening!

Ed

theaudioassociation

Mike,

Thanks so much for your advice. I'll buzz VPI in the am to see if they'll give me the info I need.

I'll keep you posted!

Ed

theaudioassociation

Mike....

Thanks very much for the Mint LP info. I guess I'm on the right track as I've already traded a few emails with Yip. The only thing Yip and I haven't verified is if my VPI 12.6 arm is the same as a 12.5 which he has a protractor for. He says that no real data has been published by VPI on my particular arm so it sounds like it might be a bit of a gamble. My only concern is that if it isn't correct I'd like to put the setup back to factory settings and I'm not too sure I've got the expertise to pull that off.

I may just bring my rig to my local dealer Brooks Berdan and have him mount it up. Sure would like to be able to develop my cartridge mounting skill though. Just don't know if I want to use the A90 as a practice piece.

BTW, you are more than welcome for the Scotch!

Ed

theaudioassociation

Sorry, forgot to tell you that I've got a pair of MM2's on their ways as well!
Lots to look forward to!

Ed

theaudioassociation

Hey Mike!

Got an A90 coming my way as well. Will try and mount it myself on my HRx. I'm hoping I don't screw it up. What sort of gadgets do you have that help you get these cartridges right on all of your setups?

See you in a couple of days!

Ed
