Description

this room and system is the result of 10 years in High End audio. my system has been stable for a couple of years (except for transport and amplifier upgrades within the same brand). the room has been in the planning stage for about 18 months and i actually moved in a little over a month ago.

my audio philosphy is to have the system get out of the way of the event. i like as pure and simple a signal path as possible and, at this point, prefer passive to active gain stages. i love all the formats and enjoy having lot's of music.....vinyl is my favorite but i listen to at least 60% digital. the new room really reveals the benefits of SACD over redbook.

the system and room truely allow the event to be recreated before me. i love the way the speakers disappear and i am transported to another place/time.

i have choosen my cables, sources, amps, speakers to have as little of their own sound as possible.

recently, i upgraded my digtial transport from the modified Philips SACD 1000 to the new emmlabs CDSD.....this was a significant step upward in performance.

i have written an article in Positive Feedback regarding my room building experience.....here is a link;

But starting right now, you have an exclusive opportunity to receive an individually numbered 50th anniversary edition Santos Palisander rosewood Eames Lounge Chair as our thank you gift for your contribution of $6500 to the Eames Foundation.

Benefits accompanying your Foundation membership include: an Eames print, unlimited exterior self-guided tours of the Eames House, and two tickets to Members Appreciation Day on June 21st which includes an interior tour of the Eames House.

What is sustainable Santos Palisander rosewood?

"As you know, the first Eames Lounge Chairs were offered in a number of veneers including rosewood, often considered to be the most beautiful of woods. Unfortunately, rosewood is not a sustainable resource. As a result, Herman Miller and Vitra, our two authorized manufacturers, discontinued its use in the 1980s.

Recently, a sustainable variety of rosewood called Santos Palisander has been found by countries seeking sustainable forestry practices. We are thrilled to be working with Herman Miller for the Home in providing this exclusive opportunity to our donors."

Unless you're a munchkin, the Eames Chair does not even reach your ears.

Dear Joey,

Try to explain this to your friend Mike who's friends are of completely different proportions!
No wonder, apparently he feeds them ENORMOUS portions of PIZZA!!

I agree, only midgets will be affected by the headrest of the Eames Chair but, even midgets can have ENORMOUS hands so be aware!

Sincerely, Loxotoxic

loxodrome

Dear Henry,

All seems to depend on the size of your hands. BIG room and SMALL hands = a no go. BIG ROOM and BIG SPEAKERS means GIGANTIC hands and this = an absolute impossibility. Your hands would preposterous! I will consider your suggestions and work on a marketing strategy.

Thank you for you positive suggestions. Photos will be forwarded to you personal mail address.

Keep up the fun in life and be so kind to forward suggestions why the Honda F1 team is a no go this season! Is it Honda or are it the dealers?

loxodrome

The Eames Chair:

The Perfect Chair!!!!!! (but it will not massage your back)

To overcome the blocking effect of the headrest, cut yourself some BIG paper ear-supplements and attach them to your born-with protruding elements.
You’ll be amazed about the additional micro-infested low-level detail these ADDITORS will provide. No specific instructions for these ADDITORS exist but make sure they are proportional to your speakers and room. BIG speakers means BIG ADDITORS, small room
SMALL ADDITORS and family room: MULTIPLE ADDITORS for all members.

Lots of cutting fun and do experiment

loxodrome

Dear Mike,
When you answer all these question are you listening to music at the same time and are you doing so with your eyes closed? Love your system

loxodrome

Mr Mike! Lots of posts!

I thought I should contribute to the discussion with a quote from a multi respected
Absolute Sound prophet:

“I have come to think that the audio über alles types get restless after awhile with any component. Once they either get used to its sound or can identify its failings, they require a change of sonic scenery in order to get their “fix.” It’s not the music that counts, it’s the sensation evoked by its sonic architecture.”

Opinions? Loxotoxic

loxodrome

Mr. Mike, thanks.

I agree. I will start a ONE CHAIR STORY thread. I for one hope you once will start to understand the essence of my commenting. It has no relationship with you as a person, since I have never even met nor communicated with yourself, but with you as the ultimate example on AudiogoN of a person who loves the toys more than what the toys are made for.

I for instance have a road bike made by one of the most famous bike designers in the world, Pegoretti. Instead of hanging the bike on a wall as an object, I ride it fiercely. For me it’s about the riding thing not about the bike as a toy. This does not however make me a better person, but makes me a biker who promotes biking by biking. And by doing so, my son became interested in biking, not in the bike.

And this is exactly what should be happening to the High-End if we want it to survive i.e. read the articles in TAS and other magazines.

For the knowledgeable reader, yours answers amplify exactly my case. Does this mean I do not like you as a person? This my friend is irrelevant since it’s not about you!

Mike, I do appreciate your efforts composing a system that stands out but suggest that tonight you play Glenn Gould, The Goldberg Variations by Bach, CBS masterworks CD37779.
Have a glass of your best red wine, relax and read a book about The Bauhaus. Less is More.

Take care Mr. Mike

loxodrome

Well Mr. Mike, interestingly your comments are in no way an answer to what I think is a big problem for the High End.
Over the last 12 hours I received many personal mails from High Enders who do agree with my view and seem to know you and have details about your privileges obtaining stuff. Are these music lovers jealous? No way they all are fed up with people, like yourself, who indulge on stuff but have no substance at all about love and care for the creating arts.

I, for one, will keep far from personal things and I am fully confident that music is not your concern. Enjoy your stuff and keep the family happy.

loxodrome

Mr. Mike, with amazement I have been reviewing your correspondence and your room/set.
For me you are the ultimate example of what is so wrong about the High-End and why all but few are positive about the future of this industry and get young people interested in it.

All I read is about pieces of equipment, cables and hardware. Every month a new speaker or a new amp, not even one word about the software except data of the quantity.

Where did you guys go wrong?

If it is about your toys then you are only a Hi-Fi nerd and the nerds are killing the industry. It should be about the music and the emotion music can deliver. It is not a solitary thing it is a thing you should experience with multiple. The hardware are in my view only the means.

I played in bands and orchestra’s for years and “the magic” happens where there is emotional interaction. Not interaction between apparatus but between people.

Your “room” is the perfect example of boys with their toy’s and the ONE CHAIR affair.
No signs of the together. I can imagine the dance around the ONE CHAIR that will give you the utter “sweet-spot” experience.

Look at the aesthetics and atmosphere of “the barn”. We can differ about taste and subjectivity but your “room” has not one single element that would attract a music loving person ready to share the experience of communicating music.

Now some would argue that I might be jealous. To the contrary. I agree that your hardware is selected with care and I am convinced that it must produce a wonderful sound. I am however not convinced it communicates the musical experience.

For me your site fits the discussion starting slowly in TAS about what the absolute sound is all about. Should a High-End system communicate the emotional expression as intended and recorded by the musicians or should a system be able to retrieve every little
detail and be so analytical that you can tell what is the make of the car passing outside the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

Mike it’s all about the transfer of emotion. Remove your CHAIR and invite 50 people in you barn. Put on some ass-kicking music and have a party. You’ll love it.

ps: What about your family? Happy that you are fiddling with your cables all night?

loxodrome

French fries, fully agree. It's only het mid's that do a job. Therefore I suggested a long time ago: have a listen to the Kharma Exquisite Grand Reference !. No reviews yet but wait till the first one get's published, even Mike will sell his VRS-9's asap. Same for the Kharma MP-350 mono's. Out are the DarT's. But so far Mikee woun't listen to good advice. Take care.

loxodrome

Dear Mike, To bad that you have to ditch you DarT stuff. Was a hype anyway. Try the new Kharma 150 but even better get the Kharme 350 mono's. These are the real thing, not your DarT's. Unfortunately you got yourself the VonScheweinkerts (German WOII general?)that need to go as well. Mike get yourself the Grand Exquisite or if short for cash, the latesed Ex Reference 1d. This way you get an idear of how music sounds. Take care and invest smartly and keep your exchange loss for the pleasing things in life. Loxo

loxodrome

Dear Mike, I had a listen to the new Kharma Grand Exquisite
at the OLS factory in Breda, Holland. As you are familiar with the previous Kharma top of the line loudspeaker, start saving and offer the VSR for sale. The Grand Exquisite will really blow you out of your NASA chair.
