Description

this room and system is the result of 10 years in High End audio. my system has been stable for a couple of years (except for transport and amplifier upgrades within the same brand). the room has been in the planning stage for about 18 months and i actually moved in a little over a month ago.

my audio philosphy is to have the system get out of the way of the event. i like as pure and simple a signal path as possible and, at this point, prefer passive to active gain stages. i love all the formats and enjoy having lot's of music.....vinyl is my favorite but i listen to at least 60% digital. the new room really reveals the benefits of SACD over redbook.

the system and room truely allow the event to be recreated before me. i love the way the speakers disappear and i am transported to another place/time.

i have choosen my cables, sources, amps, speakers to have as little of their own sound as possible.

recently, i upgraded my digtial transport from the modified Philips SACD 1000 to the new emmlabs CDSD.....this was a significant step upward in performance.

i have written an article in Positive Feedback regarding my room building experience.....here is a link;

regarding my perceptions of the Caliburn (based on hearing it four different times at shows); i think it is very accurate in speed, i did not hear any speed related issues at all. but....i also did not hear quite the energy and drive to the music i hear from the better direct drives. to me it's the overall balance of attributes which determine my preferred tt performance.

Hi Mike,

The system is looking better than ever and I have no doubt that the sonic presentation is following suit.

I can't help but wonder if your preference for the "energy" of a direct drive turntable that was lacking in the Continuum Audio Labs Caliburn presentation is in fact a personal (and perfectly valid) preference for some small degree of colouration or identifiable sonic signature. I propose this hypothesis only because of the extreme lengths that Mark Doehmann and the Continuum design team went to in order to minimise or eliminate all sources of colouration. I have no doubt that with the right implementation (the key word here) both belt drive and direct drive turntables have the potential to be speed accurate and stable, the latter perhaps being the more important criteria here.

Aaron

Hi Mike,

"my initial impressions are that the Allnic H3000 is the best tubed phono stage i have heard. period. and maybe the best phono stage i have heard."

That is a big call and one that makes me very happy since I have long had a "feeling" about the Allnic gear. Now I should do something about getting an H-3000 into my system to try with my Miyajima Labs Shilabe and Premium Mono cartridges (more giant killers). Looking forward to your detailed thoughts once you have spent some more alone time with your system and the Allnic phono stage.

Aaron

Hi Mike,

Your experience with the Mint LP protractor parallels my own. The more you sweat the details, and believe me you will sweat in the pursuit of perfection, the more rewarding will be the final result.

I do wonder if, by rotating the arm base to effect proper overhang, you are also changing the pivot-to-spindle distance of your arm and in doing so nullifying the extra accuracy which is inherent in the custom Mint LP protractor? Maybe I am missing something here since I know the SME arms have a sliding base mechanism for setting overhang.

Aaron

Hi Mike,

Great to hear that you have been enjoying life outside of audio for a while, something that many of us forget to do from time to time.

Interesting that you are going down the analog tape path (no pun intended), I am sure it will be very rewarding.

I am a little surprised by your comment regarding the perceived subtle differences between the Rockport and Continuum Caliburn turntables but since we are unlikely to ever hear both under familiar conditions for a shootout we can only ever hedge our bets. In that regard my own personal gut feeling is that the Caliburn/Cobra combo would at least split the difference between your Rockport and the master tape. All of this is pure speculation of course based on what I know about both products from a technical standpoint and from some visits/discussions with Continuum.

I do applaud you for seeking out the ultimate format for new source material.

As always I look forward to your new adventures in this crazy hobby.

Take care and all the best,
Aaron

Hi Mike,

You are too nice in your reply to Fendergibs but I guess that is a reflection on what a great guy you are and it avoids flame wars on your system thread.

I often laugh at these people who feel the need to measure everything or those who insist on double blind listening tests to confirm audible differences. I don't know about other audiogon members but I do not listen to music as a means of scientific analysis or to test my hearing acuity but rather as a way of connecting to the deeper meaning in a performance which makes the experience a more entertaining and/or enjoyable way to spend my free time. If a cable, resonator, rack or other tweak brings me closer to my goal then it is money very well spent. Audio is a subjective pursuit afterall and the system need only please its owner to be considered a success.

Fendergibs' logic could also be applied to the art world where the value and selling price mean different things to different people since beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder. Try measuring those differences.

The system is looking great Mike and I am sure it sounds even better. Keep us posted with the subwoofer and multichannel SACD progress.

Best,
Aaron

Hi Mike,

Glad you are enjoying your multi-channel experience. It would be interesting to try your Murano P-1000s (plus) monoblocks on the Evolution Acoustics MMthree speakers. Sounds ridiculous given the price difference compared to the DartZeel amp (not to mention lashing up the Opus MM speaker cables which should be compatible) but it might surprise you since it seems to be doing well on the Dukes at the moment.

Best Regards,
Aaron

Mike,

Sounds like you are very happy with the Evolution Acoustics MM3, single Dartzeel amp and single run of Transparent Opus MM speaker cables, congratulations! I do recall you saying that a pair of Dartzeel monoblocks may enter the equation should such a beast ever exist.

Are you contemplating the Continuum Audio Labs Caliburn/Cobra or Criterion/Copperhead analog front ends? I know that the Rockport performs at such a seriously high level (and looks beautiful) that it would be difficult to part with it.

Enjoy,

Aaron

Seethesound,

From reading between the lines on other forums I suspect that Mike might have sold the Von Schweikert VR9SEs in favour of the new Evolution Acoustics loudspeakers. I am sure that this in no way diminishes his enthusiasm for the Von Schweikert but when a speaker that better suits one's listening objectives comes along at a lower price the decision is easy.

Good luck with your musical journey.

Aaron

Rick,

I am sure Mike will give you a better/more technical answer to this question than I could hope to but it is my understanding that the DartZeel components provide the option of using a special 50 ohm BNC connection, kind of like the fibre optic cable that carries communications signals over immense distances. I suspect that because of the very low impedance of the cable/interface the quality and length of the cable is a non-issue. The Dartzeel gear also provides normal single ended RCA and balanced XLR preamp-to-amp connectors to mate with the widest range of gear. In any event, it is often better to use longer interconnects of any type and shorter speaker cables when locating the bulk of your equipment away from the speakers.

All the best,
Aaron

Hi Mike,

Simply breathtaking! I bet it sounds even better than it looks. I would consider travelling from Australia to the US just to hear your system. Congratulations and enjoy.

All the best,
