System edited: New ribbons on the Minis are a real step up from the tympani ribbons. This system has far more resolution and detail than my previous Maggie systems.
Added a pair of mint MG IIIa as wings to the tympanis. Also, biamping with Nuforce Ref series amps. Dynamics, bass impact have increased dramatically. Did not expect better imaging, but that too. Go figure. You never know till you try.
System edited: Decided to biamp with 2 Crown XLS Class D amps using their built in crossovers. I am surprised by how quiet and dynamic these little amps are. The music jumps from a black background. Imaging and transparency are good, dynamics off the chart.
I hadn't come across DEQX yet. It seems like it does quite a lot for the price tag. Separate components--just a dac + crossover network--would far exceed the 2000.00 price. I'm glad you mentioned it. It's been added to my radar.
I agree, Class D has arrived. I have legacy solid state gear, so I'll be living in the past for awhile longer. My system just went up: Turn-of-Last-Century Mid-Fi Minimalist. By "equalization," are you referring to DSP? On those notes, I would add Active Speakers as well.
I'm in the same boat. Living space, etc. I also biamp, and I also consider incorporating crossovers eventually. I'll probably refrain until subs come into the mix. Then I'll have some decisions to make.
Thanks. Even at over 20 years old they are still special. Future projects include some crossover experiments. There are some limitations since this is our functioning living rool as well.
