Description

Just noticed I'm a victim of data reduction. The full title, of course, should read:

SET the CONTROL for the Heart of the Bedroom

(thanks for the lyrics Roger)

-------------------------

The main and the Druid system have now reached their final shape (er... for at least a few months, that is) Not willing to part with some of the former gear yet, I've wired those bits up as bedroom system. Surely, this could need some tuning and streamlining, but there are no mismatches. In fact, this is rather enjoyable and leaves place for further experimenting.

    • WLM Wiener Lautsprecher Manufaktur Diva Monitor
Finally found a pair used. Two years in a row, WLM has mightily impressed me at the Munich High End for what must be one of the best values on the audiophile planet, and the Diva is one of the most affordable WOW! speakers I know. Especially with the Control it becomes extremely flexible in addressing room peculiarities. Liedtke Metalldesign Diva stands are almost imperative for this, quoted price includes a pair of those. ser.nr. DI-07071 (l+r)

    • WLM Wiener Lautsprecher Manufaktur Diva Control
Turns the Diva Monitor into a semi-active system: here comes bass again. Technical explanation is under construction on the WLM website, the following is from the 6moons test by Srajan: You don't bypass the passive network inside the single-wired speaker. You precede it with an analog circuit ahead of the amplifier that offers up to 12dB of boost in 0.25dB increments. Roughly speaking, it's an add-on tone control. It counteracts the natural roll-off behavior of the Divas' ported alignments by delaying it. http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/wlm/divamonitor.html
    • Audion by Fischer Integrated Amplifier 300B
Not related to Audion from the UK. 2x8W SET amp, one of the last handmade by the German manufacturer himself (presently this is only sold as a diy kit). Sporting a couple of 300B and 6922 tubes; separate SPU. Wonderful, addictive sound (beginning to understand the SET aficionados), easily outperforms the Unison S2K that I used to like so much. Swapped against the S2K with surplus payment that was extremely well spent indeed. http://www.audion-by-fischer.de/main.swf
    • Olive 4 Server
Formerly known as Opus Nr.4, cd ripper and server with 1TB hard disc storage Ser.Nr. 1531368583 http://www.olive.us/products/olive4/overview.html
    • Pink Faun DAC 3 (modded by Triple M)
Mattijs De Vries of Machmat tubes is also the man behind Pink Faun, see http://www.pinkfaun.com/eng/aboutusintro.html
Everything these guys build belongs in the Blatant-Overachiever-For-The-Money league and the DAC3 is a brilliant case in point. The Jadis JD3 sounds rejuvenated and together with the DAC3 easily competes with considerably more expensive combos and players I've heard. The Pink Faun cables are an ideal match. The mod by Triple M (Mattijs et.al. again) substitutes a second coax digital in for the original optical one (btw, there is also a USB only version of this machine). Ser.Nr. • Pink Faun PC-2 power cable
perfect match for the Pink Faun DAC3

    • Abbingdon Music Research PC-77 Reference power cord
Superb power cord that comes customary with the AMR CD-77
    • Audioplan PowerCordS
Great design, great value, they just keep getting resurrected in one system or the other. http://www.audioplan.eu/03e_products/03e_prod3_sv/03e_sv_vkcord/03e_sv_vkpowercord_tech.html
    • EAT - EuroAudioTeam 300B
Substituted these for the original Harmonix Gold. Expensive but no regrets, everything Richard Foster wrote in HiFi+ came true. http://www.euroaudioteam.com/300b.php
    • Tesla E88CC gold grid NOS
Tesla NOS tubes - not JJ! Special series with gold grid and gold pins (price quoted for matched pair). http://www.jacmusic.com/NOS/ECC88.htm On the difference between Tesla and JJ, read here: http://www.jacmusic.com/tesla/tesla-jj.html
    • Duende Criature Golden Dragon TR3 and TR12
Very effective teflon + titanium anti-resonance and microphony reducing tube rings

    • edenSound brass damping discs
two of Dan Sherbrook's massive brass discs worked wonders to put the Pink Faun DAC3 at ease; highly effective affordable tweak, highly recommended manufacturer! http://vermontaudio.com/index.html
    • Black Forest Audio Soundboard
    Siberian genuine instrument wood http://www.blackforestaudio.de/cms/front_content.php?idcat=54

    • Liedtke-Metalldesign Diva Stand 1
    sand filled speaker stands http://liedtke-metalldesign.de/
    • Lovan Classic I
Well established quality, although I do like to combine those somewhat flimsy looking boards with other resonance tweaks. http://www.lovanusa.com/index.php?cPath=21_10&osCsid=d2f91ee85d4a42e459788b7bab28ba6e
    • Chinese Replica Audiophile Product
Also known as the "Rack of Shame". I had it coming, and yes you are so right, it serves me right to suffer. One should never, ever buy bad copies of anything. Why then, might one ask, did I do this dumb thing? I really just wanted something robust but relatively light, flexible and easy to rearrange quickly, so what could be better than the Spider? Something cheaper that looks like the Spider, or so I thought. To start with: after seven weeks and a number of inquiries that no one ever bothered to reply to in any way, I had to trigger a dispute through PayPal to eventually receive my goods. Did I really say "GOODs" just now? LOL! I've never seen such badly machined metal (whatever it is). The wood has the looks and feel of glue strengthened leftovers. I somehow managed to apply the screws (difficult to find the right angle), the protective caps however were just impossible to fit. OK, I didn't expect for a moment the anti-resonance elements to be any good, but I have a feeling they did manage to find something that actually amplifies resonance. LUCKILY, I had some spare genuine resonance dampers and the SSC bases, so the gear is well positioned after all. To be fair, at least the Thing is not going to crash any moment, so it will do for now Oh well, lesson learned.

I looked up your speakers after seeing your post and would like to own a pair of these impressive monitors someday.

System edited: I introduced an Olive4 cd-ripper/server with 1TB hard disc storage in the bedroom system; added advantage: the Olive4 has timer modes to let the music carry you into Morpheus's arms as well as tear you back out of them in the morning. I chose not to go for the HD version since 1) I will not use the drive as a cdp anyway but play only from the hard disc and 2) will use the Pink Faun as separate DAC.

Unfortunately, about half of the CDs I tried to rip so far were not in the machine's library. Fair enough in respect of special editions, obscure works and, of course, newer releases but I was not aware that one cannot enter data of such discs manually when the server is used stand-alone. Not really my intention but I will have to build an internet connected home network just to retrieve and store data, I'm afraid. Btw, the automatic classification into genres and sub-genres which, in itself, seems like a good idea for an easy search is sometimes really weird, another reason for looping it into a network with a computer and edit that.

Enough bickering, the sound is remarkably good. Then again, call me a dinosaur if you want, but I cannot really imagine a machine such as this to be the only source in my system.

For that it would need to be an AudioNec, aaah the sublime AudioNec... now we're talking!

System edited: Ever since I have been in contact with Mattijs De Vries of Machmat Tubes I've been intrigued by his second venture, the Pink Faun product line. Very restricted in terms of units produced but uncompromising quality handmade in the Netherlands.

Looking for reasonably priced possibilities to enhance this system with the old Jadis CD3 still at the heart, the DAC section appeared a good place for experiment. And so, after rejecting a few others that were either too expensive for this system or couldn't deliver the goods, I took a gut decision and ordered a Pink Faun DAC3. Very sober in terms of features (2 digital IN - normally 1 rca coax and 1 optical that I had changed into 2 rca coax - 1 pair of unbalanced rca OUT) and with Pink Faun cables to match (yes, they come in dayglo pink plastic bags; honi soit qui mal y pense...).

I have not experimented with truly expensive separate DACs that I could compare with, but in this particular system at EUR 1.2k this machine works wonders. After about three weeks in regular (but not continuous) action, the JD3 sounds rejuvenated, freed from the constraints from the player's integrated DAC there is now more air as well as detail yet all wonderfully coherent and smoothly flowing, even at very low sound level which bears importance for a bedroom system. The cables, pre-cooked by Pink Faun, perform as they should: neutral but firm (no place for "warmish" cables in a system with Jadis gear and 300Bs), but still seem in the process of opening up further. One thing to take care of: the upper part of the casing showed a metallic reverberation when subjected to the knuckle test. Easily and cheaply remedied with a couple of edenSound massive brass damping discs, though.

I will update the system pictures as soon as I found a new stand to substitute what is in place now (still looking for a demo Finite Elemente Levelplus, perhaps now they've changed the product line...)

System edited: A swap here and a tweak there and this is now becoming a serious system, hence I rebaptized it.

As had been announced, then, here comes WLM Diva Monitor. With the WLM Diva Control, the system is ideally suited for a difficult room such as this one. Let's be honest, though, the Diva doesn't "smoke" the Lua con Fuoco, but also because of its versatility it definitely plays at least a league higher.

Meanwhile, Francis of the Technology Factory cleared stock and offered EAT 300B's at an achievable price for mere mortals. Together with Tesla NOS tubes, EAT had proved a winning combination in my former Unison amp, so when I stumbled across some rare gold grid Tesla E88CC in Jacmusic's catalogue, I took the plunge. Worth it? Yes, not one doubt about that.

Hmmm, now I should probably get rid of that strange combination of stands. A Finite Elemente Levelplus would look nice, I guess...

System edited: Starts with a hybrid and before you know it you're hooked on a 300B SET amp!

It's swapping time again. I substituted a rarely offered Audion by Fischer (not related in any way to Audion from the UK) for my Unison S2K that I liked so much with its tubes (KT88 / ECC802S) tweaked. What shall I say - after I latched my jaw back -, even with the original set of EH 300B's and JJ 6922's this machine leaves the Unison at a very respectable distance. With 2x8W, there suddenly seem to be, erm, more notes in between, an uncanny plasticity in the performance, more life really! This is with the Lua con Fuoco at a "mere" 89db sensitivity, mind you. In a couple of weeks that will be replaced by a pair of WLM Diva monitors with Control box that I finally found used. (Hope I won't regret parting with the Lua's, they sound so good with the Audion and the old Jadis!)

Thanks to Jens and Rita at Hifi Alt for this wonderful gem. It was well worth 3 hours on the motorway ;^)

The journey continues.
