Clos, I haven't received the crossovers yet but DHL shows they've been in transit nearly a month already. Maybe I should have chosen a faster delivery method!
I may look into the Belden idea, but my plan was to use Audio Note Lexus as that's what my rig is wired with already. Belden would certainly be more economical than cutting down a length of Lexus, though.
I had mast make my crossovers to accommodate future drivers so I have both 500 and 800Hz points and 8 and 16 ohm connections. I hope I can figure out all the taps as they don't appear to be labelled!
Let me know if you get the crossovers and we can compare notes on sound and setup.
Thanks for all the kind responses. The pics look right side up on my screen. As an aside, I have had to change my Audiogon name to Jaybass, my actual name, since for reasons unknown to me, I am completely unable to log on as Bnrlaw, or change my password. Audiogon has half-heartedly tried to help, but nothing worked.
Beautiful system, you've made really great choices. It would be a treat to be able to listen to it. My Garrard TT (401), is one of my prized possesions.
Just wondering how your adventure with the crossovers turned out? I am almost ready to order a pair of crossovers for my Altec 846A Valencia's after reading about them in Burlaw's system. May I ask what brand of speaker wire did you use to connect the crossover to your Flamenco's? I've corresponded with Mast_mutter and he recommended Belden 9497 wire.
More than welcome to come for a listen anytime you find yourself on Long Island! The LM's are really really great speakers. Surprised they don't get more press.
Thanks Charles. The Shindo gear shines with the Altecs and the Line Magnetics, albeit differently. The Line Magnetic speakers are just phenomenally musical. Haven't heard anything like them. You would not know you are listening to a single driver speaker. The play every genre of music very very well. Full immersion every time I have them on. Don't really think Art Dudley's write up of them did them anywhere near complete justice. Btw, love your system for many of the reasons I like my own. Main focus on one designer's vision, simplicity, tubes, etc.
Bnrlaw, Congratulations, your system looks beautiful and I would guess sounds even better. The Shindo -Line Magnetic speaker combo has to be heavenly and thoroughly engaging. Charles,
Samac - thank you. Your system looks great, as well!
Viggen - jabo crossovers make the Altecs more coherent sounding than the regular crossover. Treble and bass are much more of a piece and speakers play much more like a single driver system. Also, treble is smoother, any harshness is gone so system can be played louder without pain or fatigue. The regular crossover is pretty good, too, but Jabo's bring speaker firmly up a notch.
Can you share your experience with the Jabo in your Altec speakers? Did you get a chance to compare with the original crossovers? I have a pair of 601C with the original E3000 crossovers and am thinking of using Jabo if one can be custom made for 3000hz.
Thanks for your kind comments. The Garrard tt is a beast and compares very favorably witha brand new tt. My other tt is an Origin Live Resolution with an Encounter tonearm and a ZYX Airy 3X cartridge and in many ways, the Garrard is the better tt. Especially for jazz and rock music. More drive and oomph to the sound. The Altecs are great great speakers but they don't do what the Line Magnetic 755's do. They don't have the finesse or sheer listenability of the Line Magnetics, but they do portray the weight, heft and dynamics of music superbly well.
The Garrard is a really nice condition grease bearing model in a Woodsong Audio plinth. The Altecs are about seven feet apart. The shelves that they sit in front of are two feet deep, so, no, they are not against a wall. The key to the Altecs are the upgraded crossovers that Werner Jagusch makes and sells under the name Mast Mutter on Ebay. They transformed the already great sound into something else entirely. I'd put these speakers up against any high efficiency speaker made nowadays. Super sensitive, detailed, coherent, the whole shebang.
Fjn04, With one look at your system page I understand that you understand and appreciate Bnrlaw's system. I very much appreciate vintage as in the tube glory days. Crossover modification on vintage speakers can make them spectacular!
