Description

So after 6 months since I started on this project, it is finally done. This room started out as an unfinished mechanical room with a soffit extended the length of the room to hide plumbing. The orignal soffit is on the left side of the room. To make the room look symetrical, I decided to drop the other three sides to frame the opening in the center. To hid the boiler, plumbing, etc..., I framed the backwall and adding the door to the "new" mechnical room. It is also nice to have all my components hidden back there also to give the room an overall cleaner look. Because the room is relatively small (a little over 200 sqft), I decided to do inwalls. Sound panels were created using a combination of high density foam and a sound absorbing fiber wrapped by a medium weight fabric. Sound proofing is done using staggered studs with foam in insulation. Lighting in the room is mostly indirect with exception for the sconces. I use Lutron dimmers which are decent, but I would prefer the Graphic Eye. Overall, I spent about 10 days, 8hrs/day...I did the framing, insulation, trims, tiles, sound panels, low votage wiring, and painting. It took 6 hrs for drywall guys and 30 hrs for the electrician (the electrician had to move my phone hub, security system, and cable hub on top of doing regular stuff. My budget for this room came in at 15k excluding sweat equity. I guess if I weren't tied down with my other projects, it would have been possible to have this room done in a month. I'm just glad to have everything in working order and can finally sit down and enjoy a movie.

Very nice room, great job! Are the "tiles" along the lower half walls ceramic or some sort of acoustic treatment as well? I would wonder whether the transition from acoustic paneling to reflective material happening at about ear-level would impact imaging.
