Description

I've spent around $2,500 total on this system,(all used), and I find it much more satisfying than most big bucks systems I've listened to. I did spend tons of time looking at, listening to and learning about different options to find good synergies between components.

This system allows me to enjoy clean detailed low level listening as well as cranked up, "you are there", sessions that often leave me shaking my head at how amazing it sounds.

I've read, like most, that tubes in general and the Jolida 302b in particular will not give you great low end. I can tell you that the bass in my system sounds like real bass. Furthermore the amount is sometimes staggering. My favorite example is on Dave Matthews' solo album, Some Devil, on cut 6(Grey Blue Eyes), there is a reaccuring bass note that seems to liquify the floor of my listening room.

I couldn't be happier with my system and I have ceased to look for components at all. I now focus on finding great music and enjoy both the discovery of finding new artists and albums that I am not familiar with as well as digging deep and "studying" those that I've listened to for years. This system allows me to do that in any format that I care to with equally satisfying results.

    • Jolida JD-302b
Incredible value and a sound so clean and sweet that I often don't want to end my listening sessions. My first tube amp experience and probably my last. I feel no need to replace this in any way. Whenever I itch for a different sound I just roll some tubes and, presto!, new sound.
    • Denon DVD-2900
I actually use this as my main CDP. I find it quite satisfying.
    • Von Schweikert Audio VR-2
Spectacularly under rated. Its been said these are hard to place. A little patience has paid off in a big way. I've never been satisfied with any monitor/sub combination that I've heard. That left me looking for a full range on a budget. Not a task for the faint of heart. It came down to these and a pair of Vandersteens. I have never regreted going with the VRs. Top to bottom they give me the best musical experience for anywhere near the money.
    • Marantz CD-5000
This is my secondary CDP/DAC setup. Used as a transport it has performed quite well. With the Perpetual Technologies DAC it gives me a very detailed source.
    • Perpetual Technologies P-1a
Coupled with the Marantz CD-5000 as a transport this gives me a very detailed source when I'm looking for a clearer/drier window into the music.
    • Thorens TD-125 mkII
An absolute pleasure to listen to. I am very happy with this as my analog front end.
    • SME 3009 mkIII
    Does a fine job.
    • Shure V-15 IIIG
There is real synergy with this cartridge and the Thorens/SME set up. It just leaves you satisfied and listening to great sound.

The combo of TD-125, SME tonearm and Shure V-15 cartridge was the sine qua non back in the day (1970). In fact,Shure was the importing agent for SME at the time. My first system was a V-15 Type II, Garrard SL-95, Fisher X-101-D tube integrated (25W rms, 33W IHF per channel), driving JBL Lancer 66 speakers, all from Hesselbein Studios in the Westmont Shopping Center, Johnstown, PA.
