Description

I have been working on my new budget minded listening room, carved out of my basement for the last 8 months (in my limited free time). It is a simple room with limited space, but it is my new sanctuary from the wife and kids. I did all of the work myself except for the power and light wiring. I still have some finishing touches, but I am pleased with the results so far. I have added some custom fabric wrapped acoustical panels and plan to change my gear rack, upgrade my speakers, upgrade my chair, etc.

My system has been evolving over the last 5 years and plan to continue to add, tweak and upgrade as funds allow...

Let me know what you think!

Nice room for sure.  You should invite the kids down there for some nice listening time with dad (I presume) - play them some Tool!  I bet they'd love it.

Recent update: I came across a good deal on a pair of Totem Acoustic Model 1 Signatures and took the plunge. I like the Rainmakers, but I can see already the Model 1's are far more refined speaker with better imaging and clarity. Photos and updates to come once they are broken in...

Thanks again for all the positive feedback, I really appreciate it! I am starting to consider upgrading my speakers to potentially the Totem Model 1 Signatures or Dynaudio Contour S1.4's. As much as I would like to go to a floor standing speaker, I am concerned that they will be too large for the space.

Next up for the room is to add some shelving in the back corner for CD's and add an area rug.

Very exquisite, looking system there. I enjoy looking at your system. How do you like the Totem Rainmaker? Enjoy

Hi Jayts76,
You have a very nice room. If you enjoy your glassed pictures, keep them up there. When I placed large pictures with glass on my walls I didn't experience any adverse effects what so ever. I like looking at the legendary musicians hanging there.

I can't but agree with the opinions on your room, very well done. Your system is well matched for your room.

I hope your planned upgrades bring the improvements and enjoyment you wish for.

Dan

Stunning. Hands down one of the best looking rooms on A'gon. I am sure it sounds impressive as well. Congrats.

I'm a first time home buyer (Sept. 2009) and my biggest headaches have been water related.
When I lived in Chicago, my basement would flood every hard rain.
Here in 'Vegas, it's been defective fittings on the toilet (woke at 2 a.m. to the sound of a giant fuel injector and stepped into two inches of water -Surprise!).
Also, a lawn sprinkler head fell off and was shooting water on my wall daily for weeks.

I'd suggest purchasing some water alarms (usually placed next to a washing machine or under a sink).
This way you'll at least have a fighting chance to save that beautiful floor.

A final tragedy: My friend loaned me his Tandberg reel-to-reel so I could listen to master tapes he'd made (Church Organ) and make copies of my old R2R recordings.

When returned, he put it in (you guessed it) his basement.
After a nasty Chicago downpour, he found his basement flooded. I think the R2R was submerged and I don't think he ever tried to play it again.

Good luck.

Love your room. Great job! I used to own that same Cary amp and really liked it. Very nice system. Enjoy!

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate the comments. The room is approximately 10'x 12'. When I was building it, I tried to stick as close as possible to the ratio's on the Cardas website, but I had limitations to work within. When I built the walls, I used commercial grade 5/8" drywall with a layer of 1/2" sound board and batt insulation between the studs.

The acoustic panels are Decoustics fabric wrapped panels that were custom made for a commercial construction project that the client decided not to use (Lucky for me).

I do plan to add an area rug and I actually have some rubber backed acoustic mat that I am going to install under the area rug that will also add to the dampening.

The pictures only have a plexiglass over them... But its more form over function I guess. I wanted to display my collection of concert posters!

Yes, by all means... the wood flooring looks great but is bad (promotes reflections) for acoustics. Even a large area rug would help.

Also, if those large pictures are covered by glass, that also promotes reflections and, especially in a small room, the sound quality will suffer.

Sometimes we have to make a choice between nice aesthetics or wonderful sound...

Beautiful. Enjoy every minute down there!

Yes, great room! Whats the dimensions? I too have a limited space (10x10) and am just now considering room treatments. What do you use? I am told room treatments are even more critical in small rooms. My issue with room treatments is that most of them are ugly. I am settled on Vicoustic products which seem to look as well as they perform. Also, have you considered adding a rug? I have wood floors in my room as well and adding a rug helped a bit.

What a lovely room! And very nice system to go with. Congratulations on getting the room completed. What are the dimensions of the room? Really beautiful!
