Thanks. I am not the first owner but I have to applaud to thank the previous owner, him or her for the extreme care about the Patricians for over 45 years. The Patricians condition is excellent, just like to place order 50 years ago and delivered last week.
Thanks Esotheric. Could you please provide me the link that I can look. Yes, I agree with you. Setting up the system is very time consuming. One of my HiFi friends came to my place to try Goto drivers with the active crossover. At the end, I still like the passive crossover better. It's very musical. Active crossover delivers very precise and dynamic sound but less music.
Seeing the gorgeous grills of the Patrician IV's tells me that, if you bought them new, you and I must both be on medicare. I first heard them at Audio Engineers in West Allis Wisconsin in 1957. They had 2 Patricians, and a JBL Ranger Paragon. When I heard them there was a special price on Patricians; buy one at $999.99 and get the second for a penny.-----
Being in High school , I built two of them over the next 2 years. It would have been cheaper to just buy 2 for $1,000.
I used them until 1984. I heard an infinity Quantum Line Source, used, and the first generation of the IRS. Sonic preferences changed, but I still have all the drivers and crossovers from the Patricians. I'll keep them along with the memories of my first girl friend.
Time allignment will enhance the sound of one of the greatest speakers anyone could hear, good luck.
a friend and i(you can see his system on audioconsulting as mr k) Played with a deqx room correction to check perfect time alignement on a pair of duo and an altec 515/vitavoxs2/phl mid it took us 2 days to check for correct setting only using the deqx as graph generator so to speak . we ended up hanging the horns on fishing lines from the ceiling (you could see it on the pics) once set as accurate as we could .i can honestly say that the duo performed outstandingly well .with a sense of ease that was not available before .it just times right sort of agile and very very articulate .i would say one or 2 steps towards realism the bass ended up about 2' in front of the mid mouth in fact the mid driver was more like 2 1/2 foot behind may be way too impractical for you and you still had to keep the mid/high sort of nearfield in a very similar setup audiophysic recommend for speaker placement . deqx did almost the same job with the speakers on their frame but changed the character of the cd player ( A REYMIO)quite a bit i have seen a lot of die hard vintage altec /vitavox fans using tact in france .the disti for goto in france uses a tact to correct all these problems .
Hi Esotheric. Yes, its' a bit of challenges. I was using Patrician IV 4 ways before I switched to WEs mid/high. Patrician sounds fabulous, WE's mid/high is much swetter and musical. Patrician IV used to be sitting right behind the mid driver then the timing seems to be matched but less bass due to lack of the extension of the wall at the corner. Now, the set up is very musical. I may need to put the mid range closer to the back wall. I need to try it anyway. Any comments are welcome. At this moment, there is no DSP yet for the set up.
Thanks Shadome. I've experienced many modern built expensive speakers, from $20K to $50K+, they are very Hi-Fi and dynamic but weak at such beautiful voice range from mid to mid-hi. WE 555W and 597A are performing very sweet and beautifully in that range even at very low volume. Definitely, AN Shinri and the vintage WE300B tubes contribute a lot too. I also used WE vintage condensers to build the crossover myself. I can provide some original WE crossover schematics if someone is interested in.
nice gear .very hard to come by i suppose . one thing .if the mid/highs are so upfront from the bass .how do you overcome time alignement issues on this system .is there any dsp on it
