Compared with the MFA It’s less up front, less hi-fi and if anything a little self effacing but plug in the Miyajima Zero mono and you are hearing a completely different cartridge — like most Miyajima’s the mono is a bit blousy but the clarity and openness of the Ypsilon complements this ideally and the levels of involvement and impact it can bring out of 50s classical, jazz and pop recordings is amazing — Julie London or the Chordettes never sounded so good.
In stereo with the AS Palladian the match is perhaps not as ideal as the absolute lack of add on colouration from the step up leaves the, perhaps tilted to the too transparent (this is after all a German cartridge), Palladian exposing shortcomings in recordings ruthlessly. It doesn’t make things sound bad, but if you were looking for a nice upper bass bloom to cover up poor studio work you won’t find it. Vocals once again are served very well, and inner detail is captured in ways I have never heard before. Frankly it tempts you to think about exploring more flavours and varieties of cartridge!
