This being my first effort out is a combination of all the great input gathered from the Audiogon Web Site (thanks all) and my own crazy mind. I was disapointed until I took out the Sony CD carousel as it didn't have a coax digital out and went to the Pioneer Elite AND the P1-A,P3-A and Monolithic power supply. I'm VERY happy with the sound. This should do for a while.
Well, the listening(cigar & drinking)room is done and the collection of gear actually sounds better than I thought it would. Very detailed sound with a decent sound stage. The sound is fairly warm, especially with female vocalists like Joni Mitchell. I also enjoy acoustic cd's as well, Dave Mathews & Tim Robbins at Luther College, Unplugged, you get the idea. If I can just keep the cigar smoke down so I don't have to turn on the exhaust fan, then turn up the music to drown out the fan...
Webnick, You are correct about the Sony, it only has a toslink. To the extent that my system is thrown together in the corner of the living room until I get the basement finished...it sounds pretty good. I do have the Adcom set up for passive. I toggeled back and forth and that is the way to go. I'll update the thread, probably in 2 months when I can really let loose with it. Thanks for your interest. Steve
Congrats on your first system. Two things have piqued my interest. First, did your Sony not have a digital output? Or was it that the Sony only had a toslink output? Second, how satisfied are you with the Adcom? Using it in passive mode only?
System edited: I upgraded some IC's. Went from a silver Ixos to a Cardas Lightning 15 .5 meter digital cable and from the factory i2s connecting the P-1A to the P-3A a Revelation Audio Labs 'Prpophecy' i2s. I believe I heard a more noticible improvement with the Cardas than when I upgraded the i2s. More detail and smoother sound. The real test will be when I get the basement finished. Actually started last weekend...
Thanks. I like some old rock (Tom Petty,Doors,Pink Floyd etc), female vocalists, acoustic guitar, jazz and some classic (nothing that's going to put me to sleep), I'm just not that sophisticated...
