Description

This is a system about the "what if" question regarding a fantastic speaker from a cost to benefit ratio and adding a plasma tweeter from Vaughn Loudspeakers and the fabulous Plasmatron 3 from VH Audio. (To try one is to want.....)The question was about how far could the 1.7 be taken and would it start to be the weak link? A system with no cone drivers, and no subs. Having listened extensively to the 20.1, owning the 3.6 and 1.6 in the past made this very intriguing indeed. I preferred the 3.6 tweeter over the stock 1.7, but felt the coherence better with the 1.7. Being used to a plasma tweeter in my main rig had me wanting more. So, I began trying to mate a 95dB sensitive powered tweeter to an 86dB sensitive panel. I used a 1.5uf OIMP capacitor from VH Audio and they are quite transparent caps, besting my Mundorfs. At this Xover point, I am close to the 4-5 k point, and coupled with an LPad, the level can be controlled and matched to the speaker. Very little output was needed to match the 1.7. The end result is absolutely stunning with an increase in the sweet spot size due to the 165 degree radiating pattern from the Dukane/Vaughn Loudspeaker tweeters. The level of space, air, speed, note attack and release, all increased, providing a very different performance. One far more realistic in my opinion. I felt the stock 1.7 to be a little soft on transients and percussive strikes were a bit dulled, lacking a believable interpretation of the music. With the Plasma tweets, drum notes whether off the rim shots or kick drum, the transient "rise time" was spot on retaining the energy of live music. The deep bass was not missed. This could have also been entitled a tale of two plasma systems. I will be adding a system break down using my Nestorovic 5 AS MKIV speakers in another column.

    • Rega Rega P5
A great little table with upgraded cable box for interconnect use, Damping in key areas, and Rega power supply.
    • Magnepan Magnepan 1.7
Planar speaker from a legendary manufacturer. As a previous owner of 3.6, and 1.6 speakers, I had to try them. The jumper below the speaker input has been upgraded to Cardas Rhodium and silver/copper Teflon 10AWG, and Cardas silver solder and 10 AWG Speaker Cable. These need at least 12 AWG cable
    • Dukane Plasma Tweeter Plasma/Vaughn Loudspeakers
These are quite simply, in my opinion, the finest tweeters ever to fill my ears, perhaps the best tweeter ever made bar none. No moving mass. They are flat to 50k, ruler flat, and likely beyond that but who has a mic I can measure beyond that? Transients are so fast, the attack - release of the note is suddenly so life-like.
Thankfully Jim of Vaughn Loudspeakers has resurrected them, manufacturing brand new power supplies, and able to manufacture electrodes, the wear item.
    • Bryston 14BSST
900wpc monster amplifier which makes me, a tube guy, forget about tubes versus transistors.
    • Plasmatron 3 4 Outlet Furutech Rhodium
Thyratron C3Ja tubes making power for critical line level equipment. To try one is to want one. Don't audition one unless you are willing to buy one. Music just becomes more authentic, natural and the illusion of live music in your room takes a big step closer to the real thing. I have only heard mediocre results with the Luxman DAC (DSD) version. All other digital sources have been stellar, especially with a Berkeley DAC . Really a special piece. Exceptional with an all transistor system, but still good with analog and tubes. Do try one......
    • Aesthetix Calypso
    Linestage with Quicksilver phonostage
