Description

A nice full, or what some refer to as warm, sounding system. I listen to mostly analog. 90% jazz, and blues.

As most of what I listen to, is small ensembles, I don't require a huge speaker, nor a lot of power. Soundstaging, tonal colors, and resolution, in that order, is my listening priorities.

When I say soundstaging, I simply mean the ability to present the recording as a performance, not as two speakers. Tonal colors as not thin, washed out, or flat. Resolution to me is decerning the difference between size of cymbals struck, tamborines, etc, by their decay, impact, and  length of their decay

I also want to find a tube DAC, that performs as well as the Alpha, (found it)which was virtually given to me, in trade. I keep looking for a promising kit, but all I have built, don't come close to the resolution, or dynamics of the Alpha

I think my system will always be evolving, because I will always be looking for state of the art sound, at real world prices. Though my system might have retail prices that would put it's cost in the thousands of dollars, I think I assembled it for not too much outlay, for the enjoyment it brings me. It would bother me, if it cost more that my car. I have been in this hobby for over 40 years, and I am still a cheapskate. But I must admit, I would never go back to listening to my system, the way it sounded before the Nordost cables. I happened to aquire them for a song, but now that I know what a difference they make, I'm hooked. BUT!!!

Components Toggle details

    • Benz Micro MC Reference
    Very detailed cart.
    • Koetsu Rosewood Sig
What I prefer. A full sounding cart
    • Kit out of China DAC 1
Excellent DAC ,competes with costly DAC's Uses a tube output stage. I using Mullard 6DJ8's, two of them.
    • Dynaco Mark IIIa
Curcio modified pair of MK111. I think thses would be retailed for about $3000-$4000 today, because of their sound quality. They are airy, with a nice mid, not too rich, not too lean, with tight, deep bass. Not as dynamic on my stats,(which I don't listen to anymore) as the Parasound, but way more emotionally involving. They sound great with the Carvers, not so much with the Maggie's.
    • Oracle Audio Technologies Delphi mkIII
Very nice sounding turntable, which compliments my tube gear nicely. I'm using an Origin Live power supply and motor that was upgraded with it.
    • Graham Engineering 2.0 deluxe
    An excellent arm.
    • Homemade Diffussors, bass traps, etc
I have bought sound absorbers, made diffussors, bass traps, corner traps, and extensively treated my listening room.
    • Homemade. Mine
Every stand I use, I have made. Rigidity, and isolation, are what they were designed for.
    • Magnepan Model 1.7
Great speaker vary low bass is missing, but a well matched sub will do nicely.
    • Topping D9
Great DAC. Transparent, dynamic, with great frequency extension. Some grain, when compared with the very best. Not as musical as an Alpha, but 10 times cheaper.
    • Nordost Odin 1 series
I removed the Valhalla, and replaced all the interconnects with the Odin. Spacious, detailed, and seems to make the sounstage better defined.
    • Dynaudio Contour C-1
Small bookshelf speakers. They sound okay, but they project a small soundstage. They disappear, but nowhere near as big as the Maggie's, or Carvers.
    • Nordost Hemdal
This is great cable. Gave my system the bounce, as in live music. What I mean is the notes had a beginning, middle and end.
    • Roger Modjesti RM5 preamp
Nice tube pre. Much better sounding to my ear than the Audio Research. I'm using Siemens Halske CCa's in both line and phono.
    • Odyssey Stratos extreme
Great amp. I purchased it after the review in The Absolute Sound to drive the Maggie's. It sounds fantastic driving the Carvers Can't recommend it highly enough.
    • Carver Amazing Loudspeaker Silver Edition
These things sound absolutely amazing in my room. Low level details are so clear. They image better than the Maggie's, not as diffuse. Bass is not as tight, but there is much more of it. The power they exude, gives them a jump factor the Maggie's or the little Dynaudio's can't touch. Bob Carver's idea of this speaker,  was as all his stuff at that time, to give a large taste of state of the art, at real world prices. I think he succeeded.
    • Audio Research SP14
Nice pre huge stage detailed. Just doesn't sound as real as the RM, on the live LP's I like to listen to
    • Martin Logan Sequel mkII
Very detailed sound, in the upper registers,  I really liked the speaker. One panels output is reduced, and needs replacing. Cost Way too much.
