Description

Hello fellow audiophiles,

Those of you that have been following my system around the world may have come to learn that I moved to Dubai recently. My system is still on the boat, however I have found a suitable home for it. It's a room of about 60 sqm, or 646 sqft. Modern style, marble and exotic wood floors, coffered ceiling, some windows and as entry a double sliding door. So I will have to put all the room treatment stuff I have to work and manage the sound of this room that is for sure different than my old room. It will probably take me a good several months of work. Something I look forward to. Is miss the music the most, all my 4000+ titles are on the boat. I have to make do with my 80Gb iPod and Sure E530 in-ear phones. I post some pics to set the scene, and I'll update it once I start getting my system in place once again.

Edit: Nov 9

Well finally posted some picks, still working on acoustics. But base is definitely not as good as in prior room...

Enjoy!

Hi Sherakawa, thanks for your kind words and compliments. I am familiar with most of Alon Wolf's product line, the Mini, V3, V5, M5 ... I've heard them at various shows, audio shops and at peoples homes. My personal take on the speakers is that they are fantastically build, the drivers are all made in-house, the fit 'n finish is impeccable. Sonically they are leaning towards the dark side (except the Mini), which is for me not a balanced full range speaker. IMHO the M5 does not compete with my MM3, but you know how it is, the setup depends on many factors, not just the speakers. The magic of my system is that ALL components have a synergy that is undeniably ... well MAGIC.

I would invite you over for a listening session, however, I've since left the bankrupt city for greener pastures (read: Europe).

Take care, and enjoy!

No way. A fellow audiophile in Dubai. Welcome to the Gulf my friend. I hope you like it here. And yes, your system is soooooooooo impressive, that I continuously dream about. I just cannot imagine how good the sound is.
Since you’ve lived with these speakers for a long time, how would you compare them to Magico? I heard the V3 once and they were easily the best I’ve heard. Have you had any experience with Magico?

Thanks,
Sherakawa

I put in Acoustic System sugar cubes ... whow what a difference, my base is almost back to where it was before.

And this was a $140 tweak, well worth the money!

Hey, Henry,

One cannot resist the redoubtable Albert! Yeah, baby :-) When I entered college in '76, a friend of a friend had a recording studio in his home and was running TASCAM gear. I found myself gravitating towards production support, i.e. running the sound for a performance rather than performing, as it were. Well, that was fun and fringe benefits were great! :-) Love artists!

I'm going to see if I can't volunteer for some gigs and develop opportunites to bring an A820 along just for kicks! Haha...maybe, an A810?? Keep your fingers crossed!

Hi Sam, looks like you're having some good ole audiophile fun...some big project in the works there Dali/BAT. Has Albert been rubbing of on you? Haha! Anyway, there are only a few extremely devout audiophiles, and one is named picture perfect Albert! I almost bumped into him at CES earlier this year, but he was sooo busy taking pics. I owe him a cognac...

Anyway, my musical enjoyment is pretty wide too and there's so much more to discover. I do like especially well recorded material, very often live, so you can feel 'like being there'. Tell me some more about you recording live performances, are you a recording engineer?

Henry.

Hi, Mtkhl567,

You are very welcome! I have a very modest vinyl/record investment, but my spouse is quite interested...we attended RMAF '09 where she purchased opera performances on vinyl and is keen on listening to her new stuff. "...a unique combination of brands and components..." You're very accomplished in diplomacy...do you work for the State Department - just kidding! I need some better cables - desperately!! Pertaining to system synergy, the AN DAC and either the P0s or Forsell is a remarkable facsimile to analogue. The BAT gear is reliable, exceedingly quiet, and acquits itself respectfully in sonic categories. Restoring the Beveridge Model III's was a labor of love...with that said, I have a pair of Beveridge Model II's that I will endeavor to restore. I really should document my current system with photos...It won't last much longer in its current iteration as I've assembled all the necessary elements to embark on a sonic evolution - DALI MegaLine III's driven by four BAT VK-150SE monoblocks. I'm looking to source 1/4" and 1/2" pre-recorded, reel-to-reel media as my penultimate source; however, recording live performances, I hope, will be the ultimate. I have eclectic tastes...everything between Abba and Wonder to Auger and Vaughn Williams. My musical palette is expanding - thanks to Albert and his group for allowing me to share some of their great music and company in Dallas! Boy, I sure hope this reads as a coherent reply when I wake up tomorrow morning...

Best,
Sam

Owner
Arthur, thanks, the CD shelves are actually cheapo IKEA cd-racks, they're about $25-30 a piece and can hold 180 CDs in normal jewel cases. I have 10 racks on each side, so that is room for 3,600 CDs...I have about 2,200 to date.

It's a joy now to listen in this dedicated room...after 6 months of tweaking.

C1ferrari, thanks for your compliments. Indeed having had my system in three different rooms has given me insight as to room acoustic effects a lot. I guess not too many people have that benefit. Its a long process but fun!

I see you have digital and tape...where is your vinyl? You have a unique combination of brands and components. Where do you hear significant synergy in your system? What music do you listen too?

mtkhl567

Awesome new space, congrats!

Who makes your cd storage shelves?

Enjoy your beautiful new room!

Hi Mtkhl567,

Agon's intrepid global audiophile! :-) I admire all the practical knowledge you must be developing regarding room acoustics and system set-up synergy...I'm still working on just my one room! I hope you've met some nice people, who share our interest, along the way.

Sincerely,
Sam

I just put in Acoustic System's sugar cubes...whow what an impact...17 little pieces of wood. Its like having a giant equalizer on your front wall. The base has very noticably improved from before. More soundstage definition, space and less reverb (from my fairly bare room).

Now I will play with each 17 individual positions to finetune...that will be fun for some time.

Enjoy, and keep em spinning!

Owner
Zeph, thanks for your thoughts. I did move around the speakers before I spiked them in the spot where they are. The soundstage depth and breadth is phenominal. I like it this way, although my base isn't what it used to be...

Thank God for Franck Tchang...without his resonators and sugar cubes the room would sound aweful!

mtkhl567

Glad to see your system made it intact....have you tried moving the speakers back towards the corners by about 1/2 the distance (guessing based upon picture).
