Description

My main goal is that the system should be musical and listenable when it comes to long sessions. I do not subscribe to the analogy "Mine is bigger than yours" so I have what I could manage in terms of availability and what I could afford at the time of purchase.

I may change some components at a later stage, since I went through a major revision very recently when I changed my abode and my Maggies had to go due to smaller room that I inherited for music listening.

I tend to give a lot more weightage to reliability in the long run, my Quad 34/405II gave me fantastic service without any hiccups for 7 years and is still with me. The upgrade to 66/606 was for more power that the Paradigms needed. They sound considerably better with the higher power Pre Power combo.

I designed my own speaker stands and they are mass loaded (river sand)each weighing at 37.5 kg with sand for the Paradigms. The stands for LS3/5s's were also self designed and mass loaded with sand and weighing at about 20 kgs each. Both are made of mild steel and have spikes for decoupling from the floor.

Musicfile,

Thank you for that and I just realized that I had not updated this thread to reflect my current situation.

I moved to the US in February 2007 for good and it has been a roller coaster ride for me since I arrived. I have not been able to put together a system yet but one day I plan to start from where I left off.

Thank you for paying a visit to this thread.

Quadophile:

I just glanced at your Kef Reference Two loudspeaker review and it looks very thorough. I wrote and posted a similarly thorough review of my own current speakers, so I may have some idea of the extensive thought, time and effort involved. Therefore, I will wait until I have time to sit down and read your review with the thoroughness it deserves, and THEN post to that thread after absorbing the information.

I remember hearing some form of Kef loudspeaker at least once. It was a long time ago. FWIW: I've always thought of Kef as a good line of speakers, so your review IS of some interest to me.

Mdhoover,

Thanks for your comments.

I reviewed the Kef's recently, if you have spare time do go through it to know what my opinion of them is in much more detail. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Here is the link:

Your post to the vintage audio/high end thread got me interested in your system. What a great quote, which echos my feelings EXACTLY:

I do not subscribe to the analogy "Mine is bigger than yours" so I have what I could manage in terms of availability and what I could afford at the time of purchase.

Anyway, how do you like the new Kefs?

System edited: Just updated my sytem by adding the Kef Reference Two speakers which replaced The Paradigm Reference Studio 40 v2. Added another amplifier Denon PMA-S10 which is a 50 watter but doubles the output to 100 watts at 4 Ohms.

System edited: Just added the REL Strata III to add low end oomph to the system. Now I will be able to listen at low volumes without missing anything in terms of depth in the soundstage.

Jerry,

Sorry for the delayed response, I was busy building a new rig. Yes you can get it fixed from anyone in your area who deals in Quad Equipment. check it out from the quad website

I too have a 20 year old 405 system, but it's in need of repair (the on-off switch doesn't work, and it's got a bad R-C circuit). Do you know of anyone still working on the Quad?
