Description

Stuff that I was supposed to sell has been piling up, and with the recent (April 2011) purchase of a new entry-level turntable to go with it, it has become the third full-fledged system in my house (alongside my main rig and my home theater setup). The AE speakers and Athena sub leave a lot to be desired, so unfortunately this system will likely get upgraded and then I'll REALLY have to sell some stuff. More details to come as well as some pictures, hopefully.

Components Toggle details

    • Music Hall A25.2
50wpc solid state integrated amplifier. Stereophile Class C recommended component.
    • Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo 3
3-way floorstanders with 7 inch poly woofer, 5 inch alloy mid and 1 inch silk dome tweeter.
    • Project Audio Debut III
    w. Ortofon OM5e. Not fond of the metal platter but the basic MDF plinth and Pro-Ject 8.6 aluminum tonearm are significantly beefier than the old MMF-2.1 I had as my first starter table.
    • Bellari VP-129
Tube (12AX7A) MM phono preamp. Former Stereophile Class B recommended component.
    • Denon DVD-2900s
"Universal" CD/SACD/DVD-A player. Looks much cooler than it sounds, unfortunately. Would be using my Music Hall CD25.2 but the transport is shot.
    • Athena AS-P300
    8", 100 watt subwoofer.
    • Ortofon OM-5e
Moving magnet cartridge. I also have an older OM20.
    • Kenwood CT-201
"Stereo Double Cassette Deck." Bought many years ago at Circuit City, seems to have held up despite many years of neglect. At the time it was a serious investment.
    • Ortofon OM-20 Super
Moving magnet cartridge w. replacable stylus. Have not mounted body on the Pro-Ject yet, so far just tried using the OM20 stylus on the OM5 body.

Little bit of an update: spent some time listening to this setup last weekend with some friends and it's growing on me. I feel like the treble may have opened up a touch on the speakers, or maybe it's my imagination. Either way, I could hear a fair amount of sound quality difference between different LPs we were listening to, which tells me there's a good amount of accurate reproduction going on. I experimented with the OM20 stylus on the OM5e body and didn't hear a huge difference, although it was possibly tracking a bit better.
