Description

I feel fortunate to have one of the most responsible kids on the planet -- at least when it comes to taking proper care of electronics. (If only he were that responsible with his homework.)

He knows his way around the business end of a modern AV receiver. Being young and wiry comes in handy when you're plugging and unplugging components in tight places. He knows as much about putting a system together as your average Best Buy employee. Okay, make that MORE. :o)

And yes, I'll admit that having his own Tivo may be a bit of wretched excess. But it only has one, not both, of the tuners hooked up. That's where I draw the line.

Still, you haven't lived until you've played Smash Brothers in full surround with the sub blasting.

As a 40 year audiophile, the wholes thread leaves me feeling a little sick to my stomach.

My son will not be allowed to read this thread, Kinsekd. He's probably the first kid in town with 73. Let's keep brainwashing these little Curtain-climbers.

Your young'n and mine (14) should talk shop. Mine has a pair of Klipsch SP1's (powered) and an RC3 center. A couple of B&W 302's in the back and a Sony receiver. A DirecTV HD reciever plus a Tivo receiver and Gamecube. These were all gifts, or hand-me-downs in the case of the speakers. He has purchased on his own a Samsung 26" HDTV, Phillips CD recorder, XBox, and a 360. He also confiscated a 13 inch portable so he could play games and watch TV at the same time. Also bought a PS2 and gave it to his little brother when he got the first XBox. He also appreciates what he has and loves to steal my magazines. He also knows it all goes away if the grades slip. So far that has never been a problem. Good thing he only inherited my love for equipment and not my intelligence. The younger is also hooked up but thinks a his woofer in named Sparky (beagle). Good smart kid also. I am truly lucky.

Way to go! You've got a lucky boy with a great system. I still have my full NHT 5.1 HT set up (Twos, Ones & center) from my HT days and love them. I've currently got the SuperOnes doing 2 channel HT duty in the living room...mostly for my 3 1/2 year old boy.

I use a Marantz SR 19 EX receiver. I've had the NHTs and Marantz for years and they get used regulary and I never get anything but satisfying performance. If your "son" gets the upgrade bug try out a Marantz receiver for some synergy with the NHTs.

System edited: Looking to upgrade aging 60 inch Sony rptv to high def. Son is reluctant to give up tv for anything smaller. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Most 9 year olds do :-). I was taking equipment apart at that age too - and learned about capacitance the hard way. I'll tutor math if I can move in and you buy me system. I see no reason that the size of the display does anything expect make his system cooler. I vote he gets it (I'm a psychologist so you owe me for housecall). Cool kid, cool dad, why worry.

System edited: Recent changes to my Main system left me with a 60 inch Sony rptv to either sell or keep. I KNOW which way my son would like me to go, but I'm afraid a 60 inch tv is wretched excess for a 9 year old kid. Still, he does have a birthday coming up soon... ;o)

I've been around this biz for 20 years, and I like your chioces for him!
Have fun...

You've got quite the little audiophile developing. I'll be looking forward to chatting with him some day in the forums.
Of course he'll probably be talking over my head by the time he's fifteen :^)

Beautiful set up! I'm sure he knows MUCH MORE than the average Best Buy, Good Guys and Circuit City hack.
