Description

Advent/Econowaves reign supreme as the Omegas are out and in another room.

I'll update the photos some day, probably after I finish the EL84 SEP amp.  Still waiting for transformers from EDCOR in NM.

I don't pretend to know it all, but I'm learning (often the hard way).  I'm not doing the false humility thang, so I recognize my system is no longer really a budget system, but it's all relative, right?

Components Toggle details

    • Denon DL-103 Moving Coil Cartridge
My favorite, I have to admit.  I guess humble conical stylii are what my imperfect records need.

My Fidelity Research MC201 and Ortofon 2M Black might measure better, but the '103 is less "hi-fi-sounding" and not nearly as fussy.
    • Well Tempered Labs Simplex
Does the job and does it well.  It's probably the one component I will never change or upgrade, and I know you never say never when referring to upgrades.

For such a Rube Goldberg-looking contraption, the Simplex works very well.  Firebaugh is a genius.
    • SofTone Model 4 Phono Stage
I use the SofTone's MM stage, preferring my outboard Cinemag 1254 SUTs for MC duty.  I really like the SofTone a lot.  For a while, I was thinking about building an EAR 834P clone, but now I think it would be pointless.
    • DIY version of First Watt/Pass Labs Preamp
Wayne's BA 2018 preamp.  Wayne Colburn, Nelson Pass's preamp designer, designed and shared this preamp with DIYers at DIYaudio.com.

Perhaps the best preamp I ever owned was an Audible Illusions 2-C (and a Superphon was the best s/s preamp).  This is even better, except for the AI's eerie holographic 3D soundstage.  Ultimately I like the BA 2018 better.  I'm betting a "real" TOTL Pass preamp would make me cry.

It kills me that this preamp sounds better to me than my LTA MZ2 (with LPS+ power supply), which now sits in my office, unused.  I'm looking for cheap bookshelf speakers for the office, as I hate wearing headphones.  The LTA is not bad at all, but just not as good.  Perhaps the newer LTA gear is a lot better, as some claim.  Getting pricey, though.
    • DIY First Watt F4
DIYaudio.com FW F4 class-A 25 wpc amp.  I can only use this amp when the weather is cold.  I'll be building an EL84 SEP amp soon.  Otherwise, it sounds pretty great, better than the factory-built F6 I once owned.
    • Advent Large Advent Speakers
Econowave box with Dayton polyimide compression drivers handling the mids and highs.  I like them overall more than my Omegas, which are now relegated to TV duty (with the Darling SET amp) in the den.

Two-way speakers with sensitive compression drivers and woofers that go down to 40 Hz are more satisfying than the "full"-range Omegas.  The Omegas are excellent in many ways, but the Advent/Econowaves are ultimately more my cup of tea.  Live and learn.

I reckon I would really like a slightly bigger speaker with Radian drivers and JBL woofers, using the same general design criteria as what I have now.
    • VPI Industries Cyclone
I use Audio Intelligent's Enzymatic/Super cleaners with this machine.

    -edit-

I no longer use AI's cleaners.  Now it's alcohol, distilled water, and a drop of detergent.  I paid too much for this cleaner, but I'm glad I did.  It's bulletproof.
    • Audiolab 6000cdt
    CD transport.
    • Border Patrol DAC SE
It's okay.  I think there might be better DACs out there for the price, but it's tough to compare these things.

I think DACs are the hi-fi equivalent of "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?"  To my chagrin, my Yamaha A-S501 amplifier's DAC sounds just as good for most decently-mastered Redbook recordings.

The build quality of the Border Patrol DAC is not impressive.  The exterior looks great and feels hefty, but if you open it up, you'll see one of the circuit boards is mounted on a tiny piece of plywood.  I'm not saying that's a problem, but it's underwhelming.  I had to replace a bad switch (for the USB and S/PDIF input), and the switch was definitely a too-cheap part, given the DAC cost me almost $2k.

I got an Amadeus from WTL and I love it! Love how tweeky it is - I've adjusted damping while the record is playing. Currently running mine with a (nude) Ortofon SPU (with the tracking at a wild 4 grams...) and I'm loving the tone. Great cart on a great deck. I dig your system a bunch - ours have a lot in common. One day I'm going to try a tube amp with the DeVores...

Sorry it took me 2.5 years to see your post, Arun!  I ordered the SofTone from the manufacturer in Yokohama on a whim.  Very happy I did, too!

I used to own a Technics SL-1200 (unmodified) and I like the Simplex a lot more; it's quieter and more dynamic.  I don't pay much attention to it, so I know I'm satisfied with it.  Downsides: 1) You have to manually cue up the arm, 2) The tiny fishing line can break at an inopportune time, and 3) You have to source a TT cover.

Cuing the arm is no big deal to me, especially since the arm is damped by the golfball in the silicone oil well.  The arm doesn't fly around uncontrollably.  The line broke twice when I first had it.  It think it was because I wasn't "helping it along" when brushing off dust on LPs.  My cover was a bit pricey, but it works for me.

I'm looking into a Well Tempered Labs TT. Can I ask how you like it?

Very nice system without the overkill!
I am shopping around for a phono pre and was wondering how you came across the Softone Model 4 and how you like its performance.

Thanks

Arun

More pics!  System looks ace to me.  I've coveted that Rega CDP for a while now.  Speakers look real sharp.

You can get great sound as a bottom feeder.  I have.  Craigslist is a smorgasbord of potential goodness.  I had Large Advents for a while a surrogate while awaiting my "audiophile" grade speakers....enjoy...

agear

I found a pair of JBL LX47's on craigslist for 150.oo. One of the best sounding speakers I have owned. They have a big brother LX55.

Nice budget rig. Upgrading your speakers will make a major improvement to your sound. I had the CA100 before and it excels with very detailed speakers. Your cdp is also on the warm and musical side, so again this confirms a highly resolving speaker would bring your system to the next level.

"Though I really like my Large Advents, I'm wondering what a more modern equivalent might be."

For less than $100, I have been pretty impressed with Pioneers BS-22's. They list for 130 but occasionally go on sale for around 80-90.

Sweet little set-up, and btw, if you like it, don't tinker with it! And if you do, at least don't sell any of it so that you can go back to it if you ever want.

I didn't realize Bryston made speakers. Intriguing . . .

By the way, I put away the NAD and re-inserted the marginally better-sounding 47 Lab 0447 Treasure passive pre.

soldersplatter

For your space, look at the Bryston "Mini T" bookshelf.

Thanks for the nice responses. Though I really like my Large Advents, I'm wondering what a more modern equivalent might be.

Nice looking, clean setup, I bet it sounds equally great, congratulations!

I think you made a bunch of great decisions on building your system. I am sure there are many systems that cost a lot more and do not sound as good as yours. Looks like something I would enjoy listening to. Nicely done.
