Description

This is my bargain basement stereo. I'm a single dad with an extremely limited budget. So, I scoured thrift stores, Craigslist, and the local classifieds. I think I did pretty good. The next step is clear some more stuff out of my living room to improve sound quality. Let me know what you guys think. I also put together a secondary stereo rig for my daughter. It's an Onkyo TX-844 60W/Channel receiver connected to a pair of Mission 731pros I have them Bi-wired and the system is connected to my PC at the moment. I will post pics up tommorrow. I would like some advice on better interconnects and maybe some stands for my Polks. Thanks for looking! :)

Looks like you're having fun -- and that's the most important thing. If you could land some stubby speaker stands on Audiogon or eBay and raise those Polks closer to ear level, that would probably make a big difference as would better positioning.

But the biggest improvement in terms of detail would be to keep an eye out for a nice integrated amp from the likes of NAD, Rotel, Cambridge Audio, Arcam, Cyrus, Rega, Musical Fidelity, Marantz, Denon or other lower-priced brands. For instance, I recently sold my Cambridge Audio Azur 540A that never saw much use in a second system for $175. I've helped others put together systems for even less. I once got a mint Rotel stereo receiver with unused remote on eBay for under $100 shipped. It sounded nearly as good as the integrated amp its circuitry was based on, but for half the price and with the bonus of a free built-in tuner!

So, keep an eye out for a new amp and stands and in the meantime, enjoy what you have. You've done well on a limited budget.

Nice Polks. A friend of my father's once gave me a pair of Polk speakers similar to yours, but they were so thoroughly destroyed by his cats I gave them away on Craig's List. Unfortunately I threw away the stands. If I recall correctly, there was a lot of good information to be found in the forums at Polk's website. Maybe someone there could help you find an inexpensive set of stands to use with them.
