This audio-only system features Canadian-made Totem speakers and Simaudio amp. I tried to choose components that have a reputation for providing excellent value. Most items were purchased second hand to allow me to buy better gear for the same money.
Due to the size and layout of my listening room, I can only place the speakers 3' out from the back wall. They are 5' 6" apart. I sit about 9' away from the speakers.
I am very pleased with the system's ability to provide pinpoint imaging and reveal inner details on recordings of acoustic instruments and vocals. To my ears anyway, the sound is very realistic and three-dimensional.
I go back and forth on which preamp I like better - my LW1S2 passive controller (which wins on most days) and my upgraded Eastern Audio Minimax preamp with NOS tubes.
At some point I may upgrade to the Totem Forests for a bit more bass and impact on larger recordings. I might also buy a proper transport to replace the Sony changer that is currently playing that role. The Benchmark DAC is supposed to be fairly transport neutral so I don't know if that change would make much difference in sound. Plus, I like the convenience of the 5-disk changer.
My listening tastes include contemporary jazz, jazz vocals, acoustic guitar, chamber music and opera.
