Description

I like my stereo...it sounds really good...blah blah blah...the only original comments I have to make is about the room...so read on.

In the fall of '05 I remodelled the basement in my oh-so-small 1926 craftsman style bungalow (with pride, I do mean I built it). The added space was designed to provide an office and HT/listening room.

BOY DO I LOVE THIS SPACE!

I got into hi-fi back when I left home for college. My friend's parents bought a stereo from Audio Concepts in Dallas, which is a proper audio specialist dealer, and I went with them to look at all the fancy gear. If it weren't for that chance encounteer, I would most likely have spent years lost in Best Buy (or whatever was around back then). To this day, I still buy everything from the owner, Mark.

In those days, just as CD was getting up to speed, Linn and Naim were very strong in the hi-end segment. I scrimpt and saved my way into a nice but very basic system. I have upgraded VERY infrequently since.

Part of the main problem was space.

After college, I had a series of apartments and then, for the past 10 years, my little home. The house just wasn't stereo friendly for the kind of listening 'experience' I enjoy.

I eventually just gave up, and put the good stuff away, and got by with a few components added next to the TV. So, for about the past 8 years, my listening as been really just background music.

BUT NOW...I have a really comfortable setup that I am just so pleased with! I'd forgotten how much I enjoy having a proper listen, and boy the HT is great fun!.

The listening/HT part of the room is about 10 X 15. The 2 channel is oriented along the long axis, with the 5.1 across the short.

Because I custom built the room from scratch, I designed the HT install to have a very small footprint within the room. Of note on the HT component selections, the small Paradigm Seismic 10 sub is just barely over a 12"X12" cude. Great muscle. And the spherical Gallo Acoustics A'Divas provide terrific sound, and fantasitc installation options. There is nothing small about the sound of this setup in this space.

I just upgraded the 2 channel by getting all new Naim pre/pro separates. The most exciting thing about upgrading so infrequently is that you get the revelatory surprise by how much better sound can be, from what you've grown used to.

A pet peeve of mine is seeing pics of other rigs with $3K CDPs sitting on a rickety side table. Guys, spend some money on racks! The whole hifi thing is kind of an anal-retentive pursuit...so why skimp on the fundementals? And spend some of that cash on an electrician! Proper grounding, dedicated circuits and quality outlets will do more for your system than the same amount spend on a power conditioner.

Components Toggle details

    • Linn LP-12 Sondek
Used my entire 12 week Army Basic Training pay to get this back in '87...for me this is a 10,000 push up 'table.
    • Linn Ittok LVII
    In rare black.
    • Linn Adikt
Moving Magnet design. Still breaking in, but what a difference from previous.
    • Rotel RCD-951
Just a CDP...Decent enough for when I needed something to start into CD. Upgrade to Naim CD5X or maybe the CDX2 next year.
    • Naim Audio NAC-112x
    Great!
    • Naim Audio Stageline
Phono stage for MM cartridges. Simple black box that sounds better than the old integrated set up, via cards plugged within the Naim pre's. Power supply is via the Flatcap2x.
    • Naim Flatcap2x
This is an external power supply that feeds the pre and the phono stage. It really expands the sound. A definite upgrade/tweak.
    • Naim Audio NAP-150x
This is the 'x' version. Conservatively rated (like all Naim) 50wpc. Plenty of power into my efficient Linn speakers.
    • Linn Keilidh
Pretty good but not special. Plenty of dynamics. Wish I had the ku-stone bases. Will be upgrading in the next year or two...maybe to Linn Ninka, Espeks or ProAc Studio 140s?
    • Standard Naim interconnects SNAICs
Made specially for Naim, by The Chord Company, which is based in Salisbury, England; same town as Naim. They have strong development relationship. Naim inlcude quality cables with each of their components.
    • The Chord Company Rumour 2
Needed a 10m/pr. run from the rack, so I decided to try these instead of the standard Naim Naca5 cables. I think these are a bit better all around, for just a little bit more $.
    • The Sound Organization 4 shelf
A simple, very sturdy rack that works well in my out of the way positioning.
    • Philips 42 inch
Has the backlighting feature that color keys to the screen image. Neat.
    • Sony DVD Player
Basic player with HDMI upscaling. Waiting for the next-gen sources to shake-out
    • Denon AVR-1802
Plenty happy with this affordable, quality multichannel amp.
    • B&W DM-601 s1
L&R channels. How many of these must be used in HT?
    • B&W CC-6
Center channel. A natural match for the DM601s.
    • Gallo Acoustics A'Divas
The rear satellites. Boy, these a nice! They offer tremendous sound for inconspicous size an mounting. Much, much better than comparable in-ceiling designs, becuase they sit proud from the ceiling and can be aimed. Strongly recommended. Your spouse will love these!
    • Paradigm Seismic 10
OK, in case anyone is not sure of the benefit by adding a sub to your HT, your fooling yourself. To me, for HT, the sub provides half the thrill, and I'm not a big bass kinda guy. The Paradigm has 1200w and provides quality, quality sound. Very clean, tight and fast bass. This is a step above the Paradigm Ultracube, which I also auditioned. They both perform beyond there price point and form factor. Get one!
    • Audioquest Optical, Component and HDMI
    A mix of various grades.
    • Wireworld Subwoofer cable
    ?
    • Kimber and 14 Gauge Copper Various
Good stuff for LCR, with long runs for the 14gw through the rafter to the rears.

Your basement is exquisite!!

I have Nait5i and loves it, excellent sounds for the money.
I listened to my friend system, all Naim + Sonus Faber Amati Anniversario. I was awed by the sound. Therefore, I bought much cheaper Naim and Sonus Faber Cremona with Marantz SA11S as a source. This much cheaper system produce pretty amazing sound for the price that I paid. If you have a change, you may want to audition Sonus Faber.s

Looks really nice, when you will upgrade your cd-player also try Linn, I heard one up against a sondek and was really impressed. Good to see a dedicated room that looks like a room and not like a Bat-cave.

Great room and system.

Linn and Naim are a great combination. Infrequent upgrades are the way to go. Enjoy and save $ not trying to reach the holy grail (which I'm not sure really exists).
