Description

My living room system is built to my wife's preference of a pair of 1980s KEFs. She likes that they are on the warm side, I like that they are very efficient. They sound delightful and image like crazy with my Marantz 8b and also with the Schiit Aegir that I sometimes swap in. Since I have a studio with another system I accept compromises here—but the sound is hardly a compromise given the minimal system cost.

Components Toggle details

    • Marantz 8b
Vintage, has been repaired as needed. 35 WPC EL 34 with some tube substitutions.
    • iFi Audio Zen Stream
Though listed here, I typically run this system using a MacBook Pro with Modi Multibit as the Tidal source, and use the Zenstream in my Studio setup.
    • JBL Pro bass 10
A basic downward-firing sub that I run below 50hz. Integrates the sound and soundstage nicely
    • Schiit Audio SYS
The amp doesn't need any gain, so this serves as a passive preamp with a volume control. It has two inputs that I use for the DAC from my computer or the turntable. (ergo Switch Your Schiit)
    • KEF Carina ii
    90db efficiency 8 ohms
    • Schiit Audio Modi Multibit
    • Music Hall Mmf-2.1
    With a Grado black cartridge
    • Schiit MANI
