Description

  • My dad originally bought these Apogees in 1988 brand new. After he had to downsize his listening space in a new house he bought Martin Logan ESL X hybrid speakers and I acquired the Apogees. I've been wanting them since he bought them many decades ago. They developed the inevitable buzz in the left channel due to UPS handling them very poorly in transit and dropping them hard (magnet/hardware section of the speaker shifter in the front shell). I subsequently fdecided to have them completely rebuilt/upgrade by Bill Thalmann with Music Technology in Springfield, Virginia. The whole process from getting the gen5 ribbons and associated parts from Graz in Australia to getting to the top of the waiting list with Bill took about a year and half. I got all new ribbons, socks, wiring kit (includes upgraded ribbon tension clamps), acoustic foam, reinforcement of the frame, cardas binding posts, coating of the inductors with linseed oil for better isolation (as effective as replacing the inductors), replacing the Sprague crossover caps with all new Wilson crossover caps, having them painted in a deep charcoal automotive grade paint job, etc. Everything that could be done short of replacing the magnets with stronger magnets was performed (this option only offered by True Sounds Works). I didn't want to fundamentally alter the original design of Jason Blume and company so new magnets weren't seriously considered. Graz authorized Apogee repair/upgrade companies are now down to just Rich Murray with True Sounds Works in Nevada. I understand he does excellent work. Bill did exceptional work on my project, but unfortunately he got to the point where he was forced to retire due to Parkinson's disease. He will be greatly missed!

The results far exceed expectations! I didn't think it was possible since they sounded so incredible stock, but the speakers have been noticeably improved in every way.

Speakers are 105" (8.75') apart inside edge to inside edge, large listening sofa 89" from the front of the speakers centered, speakers are toed-in 1" (made a huge impact - pulled in the sound stage focus a bit while not shrinking the huge soundstage, bass impact increased, transparency is magnificent as always with these speakers), 39" from the back wall.

@dj they were definitely well known in their era when Apogee was still in business (until 1999 as I recall). Those that have heard them definitely still remember them. There weren’t too many amps in those days that had enough current to properly power them, but there are certainly many choices today. Although, my BAT VK-600 with BAT pack was originally produced around 2008 and is still running strong. It’s definitely built like a tank.

A blast from the past for sure!!! I’ve never owned Apogee but a shop  I frequented many moons ago carried them and powered them with early Krell amps. Fond memories!
Thanks for posting!

@dank these Duetta Signatures were magical from the first moment my dad fired them up in ‘88. Luckily he had a great dealer in NJ and got proper component matching, setup/sound room configuration advice from them and Jason Bloom. My ears/brain were quickly and permanently “modulated” to the Apogee sound. I didn’t think it was possible, but once I had them restored/fully upgraded with the latest Graz ribbons and top quality modernized parts they went to a whole new stratosphere. When I close my eyes in the spot front and center they easily take me to another place and/or a meditative state. As an example, one of my favorite songs/pieces that achieves both is Trentemoller - Miss You. It’s a xylophone/electronic masterpiece by the Danish genius.  Although the engineering is great, I hope one day he takes it to another level with FLAC!

@danknowlton I was lucky that my dad had a great dealer and the means to initially purchase the Duetta Signatures in NJ back in ‘88. My ears have forever been “modulated” to their sound. Although they sounded great new, they are in a totally different stratosphere now since I’ve optimized their potential with greatly improved Graz ribbons and modernization/restoration of all of it ls parts. I feel very fortunate to be able to experience their magic every day. When I close my eyes in my favorite spot front and center they take me to another place and easily take me to a meditative state when I need it. Some songs/pieces do both for me at the same time, such as one of my all time favorites Trentemoller - Miss You. It’s a xylophone/ electronic masterpiece. The engineering is exceptional. I hope one day the Danish genius takes the recording to another level with FLAC on Tidal :).

Oh, I am so sorry you have to put up with that system!  VBG!  I was able to listen to your model when I lived in San Diego and LOVED it - I had a set of Theil 3.4's and the Apogees just blew them out of the water in many ways.

GOOD FOR YOU!

Thanks all. Definitely don’t trash your Apogees in storage. We need to keep these gems in use so they don’t die off. I would love to get my hands on a pair of Full Ranges, Divas or Scintillas one of these days. I think the pair of Full Ranges that never left their original packaging are still for sale…maybe. They are all very special speakers when matched up with the right gear!

What a great story and great job restoring dad's Apogees! And very cool system and nice room overall!

jond

They look great! to bad you don't live in the BayArea, I would have given you a pair that I got from a storage locker, that I think needed repair. and I'm not going to spend CRAZY money that was quoted to me.for a full tear down.

Great looking room!

Thanks all. It does sound great. I've always loved the wave of energy that flows over you effortlessly when full range ribbons are dialed-in just right. Since I have the speakers so far apart without the ability to place the listening sofa far enough back, it really improved the sound in every way toeing the speakers in 1". I'm sure at some point I'll implement another upgrade, possibly a re-clocker such as the AfterDark Project. I need to evaluate where I can likely make the most impactful improvement, though, first.

Your system looks fabulous - hope it sounds that way too!
Nice work.
