This system can do wonderful analog two channel using the Marantz 7702 "Pure Direct" setting, can play any type of disc or file either video or audio using my Sony Universal BRP. I primarily use an X-Box Series S for movie and music streaming because it can be set to upmix content to native Atmos, DTS, or 2, 5,or 7 channel audio. Much better to my ear than the upmixers in a processor or a receiver. I listen to stereo 10% of the time and immersive audio using Auro 3D, Audyssey DSX, or Atmos most of the time. What made this system an "end game" system for me was adding the room treatments and then upgrading to a pro license of Audyssey and using a calibrated mic instead of the one that came with the Marantz processor. Once I did that I felt very little desire to change or upgrade anything else.
Immersive/Spatial Audio
For listening in immersive audio I find using wide channels more important than height channels. You can look up the studies that Thomas Holman (THX founder) did with Audyssey when they created the Audyssey DSX codec. If you are doing an immersive home theater I recommend wide channels at 60 degree angles from the MLP and using as close to an identical speaker as your fronts as possible.
I use Paradigm Active 40's for L-R and the Active 20's for wide channels, taking care to have the tweeters the same height. (link to specs) You might notice the matching Paradigm Active center channel sitting on a pair of Isoacoustic stands. Same thing, getting the tweeter at the same height as front left and right. The left and right height channels you see near the ceiling are Active 20's which needs tall stands to support the weight of the amps inside. The center height channel is the Paradigm Cinema 400 which uses the same tweeter as the active speakers and was what Paradigm recommended. I am driving that speaker with a separate amp. Sandwiching a big screen between a lower and upper center channel is awesome, and makes vocals just right. So many people complain of having to boost the center channel, not with this setup. Finally, using height channels instead of speakers firing that are embedded in the ceiling is one of the recommended Dolby layouts and I just set the processor for front and rear height channels.
This setup is also recommended for Auro 3D so it serves as a universal setup for all immersive audio formats.
You'll notice the bass traps going up to the ceiling in the corners, the acoustic panels in the front, below the screen and between the center and the left/right speakers are diffusor/absorber combo panels. The side walls alternate absorptive panels with diffusors. If you can see the top you'll notice I have some absorptive panels in the front of the room on the ceiling. Above the MLP I have Auralex Geofusors that are back filled with polyfil so they do double duty as diffusors and bass traps. Below the projector and behind the second row of seats I have 4 Auralex Acoustic Lens diffusors hanging in an Acoustic Cloud. Auralex sells the kit you need for hanging them, wasn't too difficult to install.
I took special care to power my system starting with Pangea outlets, Virtual Dynamics power cords, a Black Lion Audio PG2 power conditioner and the ADD-POWR or QRT system which conditions power in a different way than any power conditioner that I am aware of. The network is all on the same upgraded power setup I use for the components. When you use active speakers you don't need speaker cables but each speakers needs to be plugged into an outlet so my setup needs more outlets than most.
XLR cables for my active speakers including long runs for the surrounds. RCA's for my components.
Paradigm Studio Reference Active speakers
Paradigm Active 40's for fronts and surrounds, Active Center Channel, Active 20's as wide channels, front and rear height channels. These are powered speakers with active crossovers and internally biamped.
Microsoft X-Box Series S
This is a phenomenal streamer if you have an immersive audio setup. It will upscale any music or movie file to native Atmos, DTS, DTS-X, or uncompressed 2,5, or 7 channels. Great selection of apps including Plex. I have never even gamed with it and should probably try it for gaming too.
Bluesound Node
Used primarily for streaming MQA files from Tidal.
Sony UHPH1 Universal Blue Ray Player
Great SQ, handles any disc ever made including SACD and DVD-A and I like the DSEE HX upscaler which upscales files to hirez. I also use it for watching native 3D and upscalling blurays to 3D.
Marantz 7702 Home Theater Processor
This processor includes Atmos, Auro-3D and legacy codecs which I use and are no longer available, Audyssey DSX and DTS Neo-X. I upgraded to the pro license for Audyssey with the calibrated mic. Anyone using a D&M product today should get the paid upgrade Audyssey at the Microsoft store, well worth it.
QRT/ADD-POWR Octave Power Conditioner
Dramatically improves harmonics, use for all front end components and my network gear.
Black Lion Audio PG2 Power Conditioner
Great piece, works better than the $1200 conditioner that it replaced. Lower noise floor, great protection, and nice features.
Virtual Dynamics Nite Power Cords
Using Virtual Dynamics power cords for my active speakers and processor.
Elite Screens 120 in Cinegray Edge Free screen
Ambient light rejecting
Auralex Room Treatments
various absorbers and diffusors to treat the room and ceiling.
HDMI Audio Extractor 4K Switch
This switch allows my to send 4K video to my PJ and the embedded audio track to my processor.
Sony TA-ZH1ES DAC /Preamp/ Headphone Amp
I love the sound of my Sony SACD player so decided to go for their top of the line "Signature" DAC/Headphone Amp/Preamp. I like the sound, I like way it remasters content to DSD, I love the headphone amp. This one component provided a reference quality preamp for straight two channel listening, Sony's end game Signature DAC, and the headphone amp sounds more like an analog component than a digital one.
Monoprice SSW-12 Slim Subwoofer
I wanted to follow the Earl Geddes bass management recipe as a setup guidelines. He recommends 3 subs for a small room one in a front corner, one on the side, and one in the back of the room. He also recommends having one of the subs off the floor and ideally above the midpoint between the floor and the ceiling. The Monoprice 12 Slim sub comes with a bracket for wall mounting. Four screws and you can hang it like a picture so it fir perfectly in the space I have available.
Nice setup. I like your use of acoustic treatments. I've found treatments to be as least important as any other component. Happy listening (and viewing).
Thanks for the kind words. The "secret sauce" I found for my taste was using active speakers. When you have so many speakers in a room with limited space you can add a lot more power for a LOT less money using active. Once you get that much power from so many speakers, the room treatments in conjunction with the DSP of the processor makes it OTT.
Fabulous home theater kota! Now I fully understand your interest in multi-channel music. I bet it sounds incredible on this system. I have almost as many blu-rays and dvds in my collection as I do CDs and if this were my system I would never leave my house 😁.
Hi, and I appreciate the graphs on your system...flat as about one can expect, but you've done a lot to tame the space to accomplish such.
I could be jealous, but haven't had the reasonable space to attempt that, and likely not for the near future. But I make do...*G*
You're closing "...have the satisfaction of being able to literally build the speaker to fit your room" suggests you've gone to my page...
I've had decent success at shanghiing innocent drivers into Walsh radiators, enough that others like what they sound like as well as what they do.
The posted pic is ancient by now, I've improved upon the look as well as the starting point(s)......multiple pairs at this point.
It's fun to run them in a 'surround' layout, funny things occur even in 2 ch.
Actually working on something that could work in any room with a DSP massage. Wish I could expend more time in play, but as 'co-owner' with spouse of a expanding business holidays, weekends, and actual retirement are more concept than reality for awhile yet....
