Audio Research, established in 1970, has a long-standing reputation for producing high-quality phono stages, making it a staple in the analog vinyl playback market. The Reference Phono 3SE is the latest evolution in this lineage, setting a new benchmark for analog performance. Leveraging the expertise gained from their acclaimed Reference 160-series amplifiers, the 3SE incorporates advanced components to enhance sonic accuracy, resolution, purity, and dynamic shading, effectively bridging the gap between recorded sound and live performances.

Design and Features

The Reference Phono 3SE is housed in a robust single chassis with heavy, machined aluminum side panels and acrylic top and bottom covers, designed to optimize sound quality. It features a vacuum-tube audio stage utilizing six 6H30 vacuum tubes (three per channel), along with one 6H30 and a 6550WE tube in the power supply. The front panel includes a large vacuum fluorescent display that indicates all functions relative to the selected input, complemented by six push buttons for easy control of power, mute, input selection, and menu functions.

Connectivity

The phono preamplifier offers extensive connectivity options, including:

  • Two single-ended inputs for connecting multiple turntables.
  • Two main outputs providing both balanced and single-ended outputs.
  • RS-232 and IR inputs for additional control functionalities.
  • A full-function remote control for added convenience.

Electronic Specifications

  • Frequency Response: ±0.2 dB of RIAA from 10 Hz to 60 kHz, with 3 dB points below 0.3 Hz and above 300 kHz.
  • Distortion: Less than 0.002% at 1.0V RMS output at 1 kHz.
  • Gain: Selectable between 51 dB (Low) and 73 dB (High) for balanced outputs; 45 dB (Low) and 67 dB (High) for single-ended outputs, compatible with both moving coil (MC) and moving magnet (MM) cartridges.
  • Input Impedance: 47k Ohms and 100 pF for single-ended inputs, with selectable loads of 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50 Ohms, and a custom option.
  • Output Impedance: 400 ohms balanced, 200 ohms single-ended, with a recommended load of 50k-100k Ohms and 100 pF (10k Ohms minimum and 2000 pF maximum).
  • Output Polarity: Non-inverting.
  • Phono Equalization: Selectable RIAA, Columbia, and Decca settings.
  • Maximum Input: 250 mV RMS at 1 kHz (680 mV RMS at 10 kHz) for Low Gain.
  • Rated Outputs: 2V RMS (1V RMS SE) into a 200K ohm balanced load, with a maximum balanced output capability of 30V RMS at less than 0.5% THD at 1 kHz.

Performance and Power

  • Noise: 0.28 µV equivalent input noise (IHF weighted) in low gain; 0.082 µV in high gain, ensuring minimal background noise.
  • Power Supplies: Features electronically regulated low and high voltage supplies, with an automatic 2-minute warm-up/brown-out mute and line regulation better than 0.01%.
  • Power Requirements: Operates on 100-135 VAC at 60 Hz (200-270 VAC at 50/60 Hz), consuming 130 watts in operation and 2 watts in standby.

Dimensions and Weight

  • Dimensions: Width: 19” (48 cm), Height: 7.8” (19.8 cm), Depth: 16.5” (41.9 cm), with handles extending 1.6” (4 cm) forward of the front panel.

The Reference Phono 3SE not only continues Audio Research’s legacy in phono preamplification but also represents a leap forward in analog sound quality, making it an exceptional choice for audiophiles seeking to elevate their vinyl playback experience.
