About Panzerholz®, why it is the material of choice in high-end Hi-Fi applications.
The German company Blomberger Holzindustrie GmbH® includes Delignit Group® the producer of the Panzerholz® material used in ACG’s line of Hi-Fi racks and vibration control products. With over 200 years in the engineered wood space with deep experience since the 1930s in the industrial, automotive and aircraft industries they offer a wide variety of engineered wood and composites products.
Panzerholz is produced using beech hardwood veneers bonded with phenolic resins the panels compressed under very high-pressure during manufacture. The wood veneer layers are so highly compressed and loaded with the phenolic resins the resulting material becomes a composite that looks like plywood while behaving like metals. The name ‘Panzerholz’ literally translates to English as ‘tank wood’. Panzerholz is so hard and dense it is bulletproof and used in applications armoring vehicles.
Using Panzerholz to improve the sound of our Hi-Fi systems.
In ultra-high-end Hi-Fi applications the aspect of Panzerholz’s material properties that place it at the top among available materials is how the density plus strength plus composite nature of the material results in it acting like a black hole into which disappear the micro vibrations we strive to eliminate from our systems. It is simultaneously rigid, dense, and very highly damped characteristics typically at odds in other woods, composites, or metal materials. Using ACG’s Pz series racks made from Panzerholz dramatically lowers the mechanical noise floor of the system. Many listeners have already experienced how this lowering of a system’s mechanical noise floor increases the resolution and contrast of the music being reproduced.
Audio Crafters Guild Pz series of racks.
From an Industrial Design standpoint Panzerholz offers the ability to make Hi-Fi racks that have a wood look to fit into our homes as furniture while exhibiting the sonic properties only exotic materials and configurations deliver. The Pz series racks lean into this using a clean minimalist design aesthetic with features like hidden fasteners and natural wood or stained oil finishes. Shelves slot into precisely machined notches in the legs yielding high load bearing and rigidity. The high tolerance machining and fastener system results in very stout rigid racks. This rigidity benefits both the components being held safety and their ability to perform closer to the designers’ ideal use case.
